heavy water reactors have positive void coefficients but they mitigate the risk by using unenriched uranium IIRC. you can still have prompt criticality and steam explosions in light water-moderated reactors but at least the reaction is guaranteed to slow down at that point. idk, maybe the fuel rod cladding could catch on fire? but yeah, RBMK was a lovely design
