Is there any info on an Alpha Strike box? Was that just a fever dream I had?

Alpha strike is super quick and fun. You can find the cards online and just print em off.

You can still get lance packs from CoolStuffInc for $7. I got the whole run for around that price, but about half are sold out now.

Same question as many months ago: will there ever be a new Alpha Strike box?

Second question: why are you not playing Alpha Strike like all the time?

Is there a running list of all the lance packs currently available? It currently looks like there's a dozen lance/star packs right now.

They need a "all the minis" option.

I did a game yesterday where I fielded one company along with a friend who also fielded one, vs a third player who fielded two. We slapped three hex maps side by side and played a ridiculously big Alpha strike game in about four hours all told.

The hex conversion is super straight forward: 1 hex is two inches. Given that we could not only field lances, but whole companies, I’m wondering if I’ll ever go back to classic Battletech again.

e: a Centurion headshot my Awesome and dropped it straight off. My Flea continually harassed the back side of a Cyclops until it finally killed the drat thing (meaning my Flea killed an assault), effectively taking the cyclops out of the fight entirely. The cyclops never did decent damage because it was constantly turning backwards to try to get at my Flea. Alpha Strike is amazing.

Hey Alpha Strike players, I’m planning on running the Planetary Invasion campaign from the main rulebook, set during the Clan Invasion. What’s a good total force value to start with for a campaign? The book says between 36-45 mechs, which is about 1300 PV. Does this sound ok?

Dr. Lunchables
Dec 27, 2012

IRL DEBUFFED KOBOLD

Yeah, it’s in the old Alpha Strike book, I don’t know about the Commanders Edition. They’re the same Total Chaos campaign system that everything BT uses, and it recommends the number of mechs/units described above. They have army listings of five factions and two clans a bit further in the book, and they recommended using those in duplicate.

However, I like PV, and having used it for multiple lance level skirmishes, found it pretty drat balanced, even with Clan vs IS mechs. They list a PV for each army list of near 400 PV, with the IS having three lances shown, and each Clan having a Binary (two stars).

The Total Chaos rules don’t give you much guidance on an appropriate starting force for a campaign though, and just say the wide range of 36-45 mechs. I was hoping to get a little more granular and get a PV out of it before we decide our army lists.

Dr. Lunchables

PvP, planetary invasion style. The book has multiple “tracks,” which are individual scenarios that tell you how much it costs to engage in, as well as how much of your total army you can commit. There are scenario specific rules, and depending on who wins, it will progress to a different scenario. It all ends when either the scenario conclusion says “your side wins/loses,” or you don’t have enough Warchest Points to engage in the upcoming scenario, therefor losing.

There are also rules for salvage and rebuilds and buying stuff between rounds specific to each track/scenario.

I’ll probably pick a nice round 1500 PV for army construction then, with a +- to be determined later.

On the Alpha Strike note, is the Commanders Edition worth picking up? I know they released a 2021 update with errata fixed.

I haven't actually run a campaign yet (previously I spoke about my effort to 3d print and paint a few dozen mechs, and also make an entire modular hex table. I'm about 50% through the mechs and about 1/3rd through the table... will share pics in the near future), but check out Death From Above Wargaming. Their modules/house rules are what I'm planning on using (maybe with some eventual tweaks of my own), and they have better guidance about force composition and such as I recall. They also have a much better mission pack that integrates with their campaign system. It looks like they've released a new version and updated their website since I last looked as well and it looks a lot better/more professional now, so even better.

That’s much more specific and less vague than what I was working off of. For reference I was going from “Campaign Rules,” page 114. It’s absent from the Commanders Edition.

Those are all old sculpts, but they are the only way to get a lot of those models in plastic right now. Catalyst’s store currently has stock of the new sculpts and has the Clan Invasion box too.

That said, the 25th anniversary box has a ton of stuff and if it can be had for a good price is a pretty nice deal.

You get two very nice double sided mounted maps. For 25 euro it’s an absolute steal.

Question again for Alpha Strike ppl: what’s the PV cost of one Point of bog-standard Elementals? MUL only has specialists (flamer, mg, laser, etc)

Yeah, dig around the Battletech Reddit. There should be a handful of folks with nice resin printers that would get you something for a reasonable price.

(Personally I think it’s kinda neat that Catalyst knows about and encourages other minis in their game. I’ve seen company reps comment on cool prints and mech designs.)

If you use masterunitlist.info it makes it much easier to balance a force. Personally I prefer Alpha Strike PV over BV, because it takes into consideration ammo duration for the fight. Doesn’t mean you have to play AS though, just build a force based on equivalent PV and run from there. (Don’t use BV1, always use BV2 if you’re gonna use BV).

I’ve found it does help to at least limit the timeline though. Having folks choose mechs from around the same era is much more balanced in terms of available weaponry than allowing any era. (Again, this is super easy to filter using masterunitlist.info)

An average lance should probably sit around 130 PV. Dunno if/how that translates to BV2.

e: 130 PV is roughly equivalent to 4500 BV2. A lance v lance engagement should be expected at a FLGS, so plan around that. Grogs might get pissy if you run 5 (non-clan) mechs

I’m running an alpha strike campaign for some buddies where they start as mercs and eventually get in with Wolfs Dragoons. Then the clan invasion happens and they’ll have to decide which way to lean: defend the IS they’ve been fighting against, or their true patrons that have been pulling the strings from the beginning: Clan Ghost Bear.

So far they’ve only established control of a planet, but they’ve already salvaged a nice stable of mechs.

Does BV2 rate ammo longevity? Like how many rounds of ammo a mech has? PV does.

Dr. Lunchables
Dec 27, 2012

IRL DEBUFFED KOBOLD

Alpha Strike specifically weights PV and damage on firing all weapons that use the ammo every turn for five turns. Adding more ammo (beyond the five turns) does not add more PV, though having less makes the mech less dangerous, lowering both damage and PV.

I didn’t word my original question very well, but it was fumbling toward this idea.

It’s more a nature of these things being very different games though.

Dr. Lunchables

I never saw the point in trying to make alpha strike take longer. We’re playing three lances per side, who cares about a single Awesome?

I mean, I love that Awesome, and I was pretending that I was the pilot, but I don’t care that it got headshot. I’ve got plenty more mechs. That one certainly wasn’t special to me.

I’m not upset, I have something in my eye. I need to leave. I don’t feel good. I’m not crying because my hero mech died, it’s cause I got hot sauce in my eyes.

CGL also makes neoprene mats with hexes. They’re basically the same stuff as on the paper mats, but double sized and on neoprene.
