Utena seems like the person most likely to get involved in a situation like this one.

This sounds like something Utena should deal with as our chosen Anime Hero.

Juri or Utena are realistically the best choices here, and bringing Saionji will probably get us killed.

I'm not sure this is the best way to make friends with Saionji but really this sounds like it's going to go wrong no matter what so may as well aggravate him.

I've been away from this thread for too long, and look what happens...if only I came in time to help Miki rebound with my one single vote for him I know this thread hasn't been hot on Saionji til now? (understandable though for me he's not even the worst person we have the option to date) but the one time so far that I wish we chose him, thinking about it now, was when Wakaba was doing the wingman "ask me for love advice" thing. Curious about that in the same way someone would be curious about wanting to see what a dead body looks like. Flac fucked around with this message at 18:46 on Jan 6, 2019 |

Saionji is terrible but also funny, in such a way that the joke is typically on him.

So...this thread is not dead or even on hiatus, it's just that I've both been busier than usual this past week and this next update involves just a lot of stuff and is therefore harder than usual to write. I hate doing these bumps without an actual update, but I needed to do one here just to let everyone know that the update is coming and soon (within the next two days for sure, and fingers crossed for tomorrow). If it's any consolation, I'm pretty sure you all will enjoy the next update.

I've tried emulating this myself, and I found that SSF works and hasn't been as bad to me as others made it out to be, unless it gets worse further down the line in anyone else's experience? Bizhawk may be more stable but it is WAY more CPU intensive than I was ready for. I'll take a couple inexplicable crashes over the game running at half speed the whole way through. I'm also too busy right now to do anything with this game, but thanks for letting us know an update's in the works Patter

Bad news. My laptop has stopped recognizing when the AC adapter is in. I'm going to need to send it in for repairs. Game's on the laptop, so thread's officially on hiatus until it is repaired. I am very disappointed about this. I am hoping it can be fixed relatively soon. If you all want to just talk in thread for a bit, that'd be great. I could maybe even do supplemental content about Ikuhara interviews or something. Patter Song fucked around with this message at 06:48 on Jan 25, 2019 |

Bonus update is an overstatement, but this is a great conversation piece. This is from a 2003 interview with Ikuhara and Saito about the last episode of the show. My comments after the quote: Ikuhara and Saito posted:
Quote courtesy of Empty Movement. I read all of the interviews and this is the only one that mentions the game. Ikuhara is absolutely furious that the game's ad immediately followed the final episode. It also says a lot about this game that it was made during production of the show and still understands core show themes as well as it does. I would love to see how this game's ad looked.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJUZpOij4a4 it could've been this one? i can understand being frustrated, having this ending to emotionally tie things up in the series get followed up by This is COOL Video Game. sends a message that the story continues for all the fans out there, wink, even though the game itself doesn't really.

Chapter XXIII: Yes, This Thread Still Exists Wow! I am so so sorry for the delay. We should be back to normal now. This past month has been hectic between my computer going out of commission for two weeks and my getting sick. I am afraid that I've kind of ruined the flow of the thread due to the lengthy hiatus, and I apologize. We're back on a regular update schedule, barring other unexpected difficulties. Last time: We had to decide who to tell about the suddenly-restored old Fencing Hall, and we decided to tell Saionji because we've decided that Patter Song has a problem with self-loathing. Patter Song: (Right, I should go consult with Saionji-san.) Yes, even Saionji has to be concerned. Besides, Chigusa kicked his rear end in a fight the other day. If only we were there to see it... Patter Song: (I'll ask about Chigusa-san, and I'll go see the chalk-white fencing hall. And then we'll surely...We'll surely figure it out...) Soundtrack: She's Elegant https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6Tz21ulzbk If you're in one of the regions that can't hear the soundtrack links, don't worry, the tune in question is exactly what you think it is: the glorious violin music that follows her around through the entire series. Patter Song: Huh? Who are you...? Nanami: What? Are you saying you don't know who I am? I see. Keiko: Yes, Nanami-sama! Full name, Nanami Kiryuu. Hey, telling people what the blood type, zodiac sign, and birth date of characters are is my job! Aiko: Boasting the greatest beauty on campus, and her grades are superior, too! Her reflexes are excellent, and her fashion sense is unrivaled! In every field, she's a perfect young lady! Yuuko: Her brother is the Student Council President, Touga Kiryuu, and if it is for his sake, she'd even be willing to commit murder...A total brother complex! Um...Yuuko, you're saying the quiet part out loud. You're still doing it. That's why Keiko got the focus episode and you didn't. All of them say this together. Nanami: And that's how it is. Patter Song: Um...I see. So, um, what was it you wanted, Nanami-sama? Nanami: Hold on, you. Although you just transferred here, do you think you're suddenly become a big man on campus? Well, we did dance with the Student Council President. Oh, Touga-sama ...wait, wait, wrong reaction, abort. Patter Song: That's...! Nanami: Keiko-san, Aiko-san, Yuuko-san. Would you kindly instruct this person about proper etiquette at this school? What happens to people who walk around all full of themselves, without even greeting me? All: Yes, Nanami-Sama! Are we really going to be beaten up by Girl K, Girl I, and Girl U like this? Oh, the humiliation! If only someone would save- Patter Song: Saionji-san! Nanami: Saionji!? What...kindly stay out of my way! We're getting saved by...Saionji? Saionji: I'm not getting in your way. However... Nanami: What...what the heck? Are you that worked up to fight a girl? Nanami: Hmph...Always practicing, but you still lost to that invalid, Sanjouin. F...fine! I'll let you go with just that this time, transfer student. Just keep in mind that if you meddle in my brother's affairs, you're going to pay. Remember that! She...does have a point. Chigusa did demolish him. Patter Song: Thank you very much, Saionji-san! OK, let's make this as quick as possible. Patter Song: (Hee hee...Saionji-san is so disingenuous.) But you really saved me! Since you just happened to come by. Saionji: No, it wasn't a coincidence. Actually, I came to fetch you. I...don't particularly want to be fetched by Saionji. Patter Song: To fetch...me? Saionji: That's right. Touga is calling a special Student Council meeting. Patter Song: A special...? So does that have anything to do with me...? Saionji: Yes, it relates to you. Anyway, you'll find out when we get there. Come with me. Patter Song: (A special Student Council meeting...With me, too...? I wonder what on earth that means.) Saionji +1 Probably something to do with the mysterious sign that appeared on your back that challenged Utena to a duel that you promised you'd investigate. You totally forgot, didn't you, Patter Song? Well, let's go to Student Council. But first, it's that time again, and maybe for the last time! Nanami Kiryuu Character Profile Usually, I talk about the character's difference in the three versions of the story. Luckily, I don't need to do that for Nanami? Nanami, for all practical purposes, only exists in the anime, only making brief cameo appearances in the manga and movie. Nanami takes over the role of creepily-obsessed Touga Fangirl #1 from Manga Jury, but, Ikuhara being Ikuhara, with the added creepy twist of being Touga's kid sister in the process. Nanami looks up to her womanizing older brother with blind admiration and resents the time he spends with other women, wanting him all to herself. She even resents something as minor as a kitten's hold on Touga's heart, leading to...well...I'd rather not think about it. Early on in the series, she's Utena's greatest nemesis, but as time goes on, in one of the best directing and writing decisions the show makes, it becomes clearer and clearer that Nanami is no threat to anyone except her own three much-put-upon servants, Keiko, Aiko, and Yuuko (Girl K, Girl I, and Girl U). She is a spoiled 7th grader, not an evil mastermind, and she is way, way out of her depth in a setting that contains more than a few actual evil masterminds with powers she couldn't even fathom. Nanami has a collection of episodes dedicated to her that are comic relief in theory but highlight the underlying weirdness and menace of Ohtori, as she falls prey to more and more Looney Tunes-esque fates in her quest to one-up Anthy and Utena. Nanami is such a well-written character that Dona Dona, a song traditionally associated with the Holocaust, becomes a punchline in her arc, and it's done well. I literally laughed out loud the first time I watched the show and heard Dona Dona start playing. "Calves are easily led to slaughter/never knowing the reason why/but those who treasure freedom/like the swallow have learned to fly" indeed. The song also sounds quite good in Japanese compared to the English and Yiddish versions I had been more familiar with. She also features in the episode Nanami's Egg, perhaps the most hilarious "girl begins to menstruate and doesn't know what's happening to her body" story I've ever seen in anything ever. Put simply: Anthy had a chicken. Anthy had a cow. Touga was proud. He didn't care how. Nanami is blood type...wait, they already did that part for me. End Nanami Character Analysis Music: That God's Name is Abraxas https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBXstKmqebE Touga: If it cannot break its egg's shell, the chick will die without being born. Touga: We are the chick. Touga: The world is our egg. Touga: If we do not crack the world's shell, we will die without being born. Touga: Smash the world's shell for the sake of world revolution! I love how this game apes the pacing and feel of an episode or set of episodes of Utena. Here we are doing the same scene again, with the same speech again, with the same animation again, just like in the series. Saionji: Well, well. This was certainly a sudden meeting. Jury: Have you figured something out about the incident from the day before yesterday? Utena: I've got a basketball minigame after this, so could you keep it quick? A...minigame? What do you mean? And why doesn't this game have a minigame where I can control Utena in an NBA Jam knockoff? A letter from the Cha...End of the World? What could it be? Jury: Hmm...And? Touga: According to the letter, the duel announced on the message card two days ago is, indeed, an official challenge. Saionji: So I guess there really is a sixth Duelist. Touga: Correct. Does anyone have some knowledge about whom that sixth Duelist might be? I have a few ideas...like the girl who has been going around challenging everyone here to duels. Patter Song: (I-I have to tell them. I have to tell them right here about the old fencing hall.) Uh, um... Touga: Hm? Patter Song: I saw something! I saw Chigusa-san enter the chalk-white fencing hall! You didn't need to go there. We have plenty of evidence against Chigusa without this. Miki: Chalk-white? Our fencing hall isn't... Utena: How do you get into a ruin? This really doesn't seem difficult to do. Patter Song: That's, well...When I saw it, it wasn't in ruins. It was a pretty white building, and Chigusa opened the double doors and went inside...I'm serious! The chalk-white fenicing hall was definitely... Touga understands! Touga: Does anyone else have anything to add? Then, that's all. You're dismissed! Patter Song: (Doesn't anybody believe me? I mean, I guess if someone told me that a ruin suddenly became a shiny new building, I'd find it hard to believe, too. And then, I'm a new transfer, so I don't have a lot of credibility...But...But it's true! If I could just bring one other person to the white fencing hall...Who should I consult with?) So, here we are again. Who are we bringing with us to check out the chalk-white fencing hall? Options: Utena: star athlete, close friend, next-door neighbor, and skilled fencer. Jury: our crush, ultra-talented at everything. Touga: Student Council President. Saionji: Just saved us from Nanami...??? Miki: Exists. Get your votes in, and the next update won't take a month this time unless my motherboard fails again. Until then, the Absolute Destiny Apocalypse!
