My parents were always big into gardening, then a few years back my mom started getting into native plants/conservationism. They have two rain gardens and almost no grass left in their suburban plot, every time I go back there I am amazed at how many insects, birds, and small critters just one quarter acre plot of native plants can support. They keep track of and try to protect all the monarch caterpillars/chrysalises they find I see a weird new huge bug each time too   Thats in the heart of suburbia

Car culture needs to be crushed and urban zoning definitely needs some conservationism since there's huge sprawls of unused lands that are just cleared for drainage and electricity. It's insanely wasteful living. Also Suburbs need to be cheaper so people can afford costs of living. Reseed all of suburbia with native plants and landscape, concentrate the people closer to reduce reliance on cars, increase public transportation and biking/walking. it's a weird balance, because to really get volume efficiencies you want more people having access to goods/services. you need to either pack people in super tight or increase how far goods/services are offered, and public transit always lacks in that department. not just in the actual sense of how lovely our country is with it, but like if you want to buy a nightstand or a turkey or something else that isn't easy to put on a bus or tram or bike, it becomes a serious hassle like here in san antonio, there's a lot more unkempt greenspace than i expected, threading its way through and between suburbs. so deer and smaller critters are fuckin everywhere, there were constant sneaky scorpions in an apartment i lived in a few years back, and now there's deer that have come up to my front door and peeked in. it owns to go walking through it, but it also takes up a lot of space, which makes the people so distributed that you need a car to do pretty much anything. i'm in about as nice and easy a location as can be to get to an HEB and work, and it's still a solid 10 minute drive to each, almost entirely on a 70mph highway. i can almost bike to work (the last mile and a half are on a murder road and i would die if i tried it), but it'd make my commute like an hour and a half and also there aren't showers here to deal with the 100+ degree weather every day if i was given a magic wand to solve the problem, i dont know what i'd actually change, because there really isn't enough density in a lot of the places to make busses or trams viable. and thats after living in dusseldorf, where cars were pretty much a pointless novelty
