i visited cadillac ranch recently which is this pomo art installation in the texas panhandle. there are these '50s-era cadillacs implanted into the ground and anyone can freely paint on them. there were these brazilian guys there (livestreamers of some sort) who were painting a giant brazilian flag on one.

they were very proud of their country but i thought it was amusing they choose to symbolize it on a rusted-out old car that looks like it had been piledrived into the ground

I'm incredibly shook about that right now. Can't even sleep. To give you a magnitude it's as if the Buckingham and the British museum we're destroyed by the same catastrophe. This is because the Temer government slashed it's annual budget from 370k (which was already low) to a measly 50k

I keep remembering that Vox article about an "epistemic crisis", and that stuff is scary because it affects societies in a completely worldwide scale. How the gently caress can you have a healthy democracy when bolsominions genuinely believe that a magazine was paid R$600 million to do a hit piece on Bolsonaro? And you can see how that mutates in real time, the talking points magically evolve to "no, it was distributed to all mainstream media outlets" and "well, this would be paid over a period of 4 years by the Establishment".

It's genuinely scary to think that so many people don't even occupy the same reality, and in an incredibly virulent way as well. Everything is a conspiracy, everyone that disagrees is brainwashed. This rear end in a top hat says he can't accept a loss, but if he wins he won't even bring this up. His supporters consider the validity of something only if it shows him in a positive fashion.

For example, to this day there's at least 15% of americans that genuinely think Obama is a muslim. How can someone even reach a consensus of basic facts with this kind of people? :psyduck:
this is a contradiction exposing itself. in some societies this would lead to war as a way of resolving it but the solution would hopefully fall short of that.

what's really eerie is reading about la violencia in colombia in the 1950s and the parallels to today.

the venezuelan military has a decent amount of modern toys from russia supplied in the past 20 years, the largest tank force on the continent i believe, and i have no idea if brazil can even sustain a force beyond its borders but it will be interesting to watch

brazil has a fairly large military industry of its own that makes aircraft, APCs, artillery etc. though. but also still uses hand me down boats from the 1930s for river patrol duties

i think brazil's only foreign deployment of any note in recent decades was a peacekeeping / humanitarian mission to haiti

I've attended courses with military officers and they were very smart, realistic types, but the thing is, as much as they dislike the other factions, they will -burn the country down- before ever turning their backs of the bizarre and freaks in their midst. It's a thing across all armed forces, but even more pathological in Brazil.

Hell, the 1964 coup had basically stalled in its early hours for lack of support, until one loon general in the middle of nowhere decided to declare his command in rebellion, and then the others, even those who hated his guts and thought him a buffoon, all joined in after him because if they didn't the crazy guy would have lost and turned into a joke, and they could not let that happen to their beloved institution.

he was basically meeting with a bunch of hedge fund people and bankers to sell off brazil's resources. the local socialists weren't able to stop him but they did cause a guy working there to lose his poo poo because he tried to drive his mercedes through the guarded entrance and was turned back by the police, and was then heckled mercilessly
