Ceuta and Melilla, two Spain enclaves on the Moroccan coast that count as EU territory in North Africa, so a lot of sub-Saharan migrants and asylum seekers try to cross over and get whatever counts as Dry Shoe status for the EU. Spain and Morocco have an under the table relationship where they bend or break a lot of 'official' EU regulations and policies to control the migrant population and keep them contained in camps on the Moroccan side of the border. In response, the migrants have occasionally staged mass crossing attempts that often result in deaths. It hasn't got as much attention lately since the mass exoduses from Syria/Libya started up but it's been going on since the early 2000s.

edit - Ceuta and Melilla is literally what Trump is thinking about when he talks about the Wall, golf courses and beach resorts on one side, hordes of dark skinned foreigners getting gunned down by rubber bullets and pushed into the surf to drown on the other.

McConnell loving told Trump that Kavanaugh was the worst option from the start. Slam dunk shot to get another SCOTUS seat and help shore up the midterm vote and somehow Donnie's able to douse it in kerosene and road flares. It certainly makes more sense now why the GOP was in such a panic and jumping on Whelan's stupid rear end scheme if this stuff was circulating in the background.

https://twitter.com/Bencjacobs/status/1044054163460673536

Before this came out I thought Kavanaugh might have been able to sail through if he'd done better messaging at the start, along the lines of 'I have no recollection of this incident, but young boys are dumb and as a father of high school girls I regret anything I might have done, boys should not be engaging in inappropriate sexual encounters regardless of age etc etc'. Pretty clear why he didn't go down that road now if the Brett and Mike Show was as bad as it sounds.

No one is going to change their minds, it's all about making sure your side puts in 110% and the other side starts leaving the stands in the 4th quarter.

Are they seriously going to double down with multiplying doppelgangers? I mean, the Federalist Society grows these candidates in test tubes but this is ridiculous.

edit - re: whether Kav's going down or not, it feels more like watching a guy threaten to shoot a hostage with the gun to his head. There's nothing the Dems can do to keep the GOP from getting a right-winger on the court, but it's looney that the collective GOP is willing to inflame an already delicate situation with suburban women just before an mid-term election simply to get the first guy named Brett on the court. Any sane GOP strategy would have swapped him out for one of his (apparently) many doppelgangers who will vote exactly the same.

Yeah but I have to imagine this whole event is going to be a negative for the GOP in the polls, especially with women. Look what happened after Clarence Thomas got rammed through.

On the one hand, the GOP is losing an entire generation with something absurd like +70% of under-35 women voting Democratic over the past two years. I fully expect in the next 5-10 years to see the GOP half-heartedly attempt (and fail to) address their 'Woman voter problem' just as they previously did with their 'Hispanic' and 'Black' voter problems in the 90s and 00s.

That said, one of the points that really struck me from Perlstein's books on the rise of conservatism in the 60s and 70s was that despite all the talk about women's lib and the New Left, the real foot soldiers of conservatism during the time were women who felt that second wave feminism was an attack on their traditional values, religious morals, and sense of decency, and went out to build reactionary grass roots movements for Goldwater, Nixon, and Reagan.

The Republicans are doing everything in their power and then some to poison their relationship with women, but never underestimate the ability for people to double down against their own interests for the chance to 'save the babies' or 'show those harlots.'

I can't speak to the other two but Murkowski seems to vote in lock step more often than not. About the only thing that might cause her to vote 'NO' is the fact that her seat is up for election this year. She doesn't have much of a spine though, so I wouldn't hold my breath.

Both the Governor and Lt Governor of Alaska have come out against Kavanaugh due to some rulings he made against Native American groups, so Murkowski probably has the most reason in the group to vote NO.

I don't think she's entirely wrong here, I'd rather candidates point out that the GOP as a whole is out to destroy your lives rather than focus specifically on Trump and restoring :decorum: in DC. The term "impeachment" is way easier to deflect and disparage nowadays since most people associate it with the Clinton clown show in the 90s rather than the actual no poo poo seriousness of Nixon and Watergate.

NBC posted:

...Instead of investigating Swetnick's claims, the White House counsel’s office has given the FBI a list of witnesses they are permitted to interview, according to several people who discussed the parameters on the condition of anonymity. They characterized the White House instructions as a significant constraint on the FBI investigation and caution that such a limited scope, while not unusual in normal circumstances, may make it difficult to pursue additional leads in a case in which a Supreme Court nominee has been accused of sexual assault....

If the FBI learns of others who can corroborate what the existing witnesses are saying, it is not clear whether agents will be able to contact them under the terms laid out by the White House, the two sources briefed on the matter said.

Some areas are off limits, the sources said.

Investigators plan to meet with Mark Judge, a high school classmate and friend of Kavanaugh's whom Ford named as a witness and participant to her alleged assault.

But as of now, the FBI cannot ask the supermarket that employed Judge for records verifying when he was employed there, one of the sources was told. Ford said in congressional testimony Thursday that those records would help her narrow the time frame of the alleged incident which she recalls happening some time in the summer of 1982 in Montgomery County, Maryland.

Two sources familiar with the investigation said the FBI will also not be able to examine why Kavanaugh’s account of his drinking at Yale University differs from those of some former classmates, who have said he was known as a heavy drinker. Those details may be pertinent to investigating claims from Ramirez who described an alleged incident of sexual misconduct she said occurred while Kavanaugh was inebriated. Ramirez's lawyer said Saturday that she had been contacted by the FBI and would cooperate.

The conditions under which the FBI's reopened background check are occurring appears to differ from the one envisioned by Flake, who used his leverage as a swing vote to pressure the Trump administration to order the FBI investigation.

Flake said Friday he thought the FBI should decide the scope of the investigation.

“They’ll have to decide — the FBI you know, how far that goes,” he told reporters. “This is limited in time and scope and I think that it's appropriate when it's a lifetime appointment and allegations this serious and we ought to let people know that we're serious about it.”

Surprise surprise, Flake got loving Flaked again
