Most of it’s not murderporn. None of it is, really, but it gets dark like old time fairytales where they make the witch dance in hot iron shoes and poo poo and because the narrative is so skillfully conveyed the violence has a real and visceral emotional impact.

I didn’t mean to tout the brutality as a selling point of the series, just that it stood out as remarkable to me that in this era where we are so desensitized to sex and violence that a book written before I was born could shock me. It really put in perspective just how juvenile so-called “gritty” and “mature” fiction really is when this book written in fanciful prose has the power to convey so much greater a depth of emotion, suspense and violence.

I really love Vance's style regarding morality of his characters. Never saw another author nail it quite so. Basically a lot of characters understand morality on intellectual level quite well, and can argue it quite eloquently when it suits them, but they are so obviously insincere and blatantly selfish it its just funny.

It's like a staple of Dying Earth world, and often comes up in other books too.

They also constantly seem to ignore or forget past wrongs they have done to others when it's time to ask a favor.

My sister in law once tried to get me to read Revelations by telling me it was “the ultimate sci fi story.”

She was telling me this in response to my wife’s and my enthusiasm for Kurt Vonnegut’s Sirens of Titan. She was horrified by our description of “the Church of God the Utterly Indifferent.”

I'll admit to having only a limited knowledge of the shenanigans that take place in GoT on account of the books are so terrible I can hardly stand to read them, but I'd wager they barely hold a candle to the cruelties Jack Vance wreaks upon his hapless characters.

I recently started reading Lyonesse: Suldrun's Garden and I just got to the part where a pair of children trick a body-stealing witch into switching bodies with a pig, then sell the pig to a butcher without batting an eyelid and I had to pause and exclaim "Jesus Christ" at how unflinching Jack Vance is at doling out violent misfortune to good and evil characters like. This is of course after the titular Suldrun hangs herself in grief from having her baby stolen from her and her true love cast into a pit and the simple, loving surrogate mother to Suldrun has her tongue split lengthwise as punishment for refusing to give up the location of said child, only to have that location divulged anyway.

Also there's a cannibalistic, child-rapist ogre that I could have done without but drat if it wasn't brutal as poo poo.

So far there's no so much graphic description of incest as I'm given to understand as takes place in Game of Thrones but I don't particularly mind.

What's GoT got to compete with Jack Vance sheer, sick, twisted callous disregard for the life and happiness of his protagonists? I know a one-eyed man died or something and a kid got thrown from a window because he glimpsed the brother and sister having sex but apart from that it seems pretty tame by comparison.

Try "Between Two Fires", it's a story set in Medieval France during the plague years with weird magical elements. Lots of strange poo poo happens which swings between kind of dark comedy to pretty hosed up horror in tone.

EDIT

There's also "The Broken Sword" if you want a fantasy story that is just completely hosed up and hopeless in every way.

I'm no good at judging prose quality myself and it seems like it would be something that's really subjective anyway. There's a lot of stuff out there that's obviously trash at a glance, but trying to sift out the difference between "Objectively High-Art Tier Good" and "I found this really entertaining" is just way too much of a pain in the rear end for me.
