Oh hi ski thread I forgot about you.

Just wrapping up my first week in the mountains (at Squaw as usual). Didn't get lucky with conditions but had a good time anyway, traded off with my wife skiing and babysitting.

Speaking of, she's committed to going back to skiing partly in preparation for the kiddos getting on the snow probably next winter, which is pretty exciting.

Palisades on the 3rd run of the season ain't bad:

She's pumped; they both are, really. Going to be a handful getting them on skis next winter but I can't wait.

Trying to decide if I want to get around to new boots this year; been pretty drat close to a decade on the same ones at this point which is by far longer than any other pair I've ever owned.

My dad just tied a rope around my waist. I'd be stoked as hell to have any photos of that, no embarrassment whatsoever.

This is the oldest photo I have of myself skiing. Wearing the hockey helmet my dad made me wear for both skiing and lacrosse, but not hockey (because I didn't play hockey, mainly)

(consider this an explicit request to see others' photos of themselves skiing as kids)

Hell yeah! We’re headed up this weekend (assuming 80 doesn’t close) and have some little clip on skis that we might put on our not-quite-1.5 year old daughter if she’s seeming adventurous in the snow. So pumped to get her started as early as possible

Your problem will likely not be getting up here Friday afternoon as it will be getting back on Sunday or Monday.

I meant it in earnest; not sure what you mean by your response ("obviously I've already tried that and it didn't work"?)

I’ve always had cold hands and feet, and in temps below 20° usually switch to mittens with liners, and hand warmers stuck in them.

About two years ago, I had a really bad scare up at RMNP (Hidden Valley). Wind chill was ~20 below and we wound up staying above tree-line for far too long. I thought I’d gotten frost bite on my nose (“Homie, you should get inside.
Your nose is super white.”). Not sure if it was causal or just finally made me notice, but shortly thereafter I was diagnosed with raynaud’s. In almost situations below 30° my hands just do. not. stay warm. Hand warmers help somewhat, but my fingers still turn to ice blocks. It’s also made me really gun shy about stuff I would historically brush off — hurting hands/numb hands/numb feet/etc.

I’ve purchased boot warmers — they are marginally helpful. And do continue to search for a better pair of mittens. I’ve currently got my eye on the Hestras. But I’m also looking for unorthodox solutions that have worked for others. I recently came across an Instagram post from Pat Dorsey (the Glen Plake of fly fishing here in Colorado) who mentioned that latex gloves were a game changer for winter fly fishing. Obviously the two activities are somewhat different, since you don’t have to stick your hands into a river all the time while skiing. (Or, if you’re me, you don’t get to stick them in the river while fly fishing much either :smith:) but I’m definitely into unorthodox territory these days in search of a solution.

Anyway, this is all by way of saying that yes, I am aware that mittens are a thing and are warmer than gloves. As spwrozek alluded to (and I’ve mentioned), I grew up in Colorado. So the suggestion to check out mittens just reads funny. It’s a bit like asking asking a mechanic whose car won’t start if it has gas in it. I know you didn’t mean it like that and I probably should have just said “yeah, I’ve tried them but they don’t work for me like they work for others.” So that’s on me.

Understood; my wife has Reynaud's, and so I at least sort of know how difficult that is. She's picked up a pair of hestra mittens which have done pretty well for her, though that's in Tahoe which (to my upstate NY roots, and presumably yours in CO) is relatively warm.

As someone who doesn't usually have a ton of trouble with cold I don't have much more to add that I'd expect to be helpful since it seems like you've tried everything I can probably think of, but I'd imagine a nice set of hestra mittens with their various liners and covers is one of the better bets. Good luck

My Reynaud's-having wife told me her rheumatologist said Viagra can help. So you know, there's that as an option. I think maaaybe a sufficient dose is less than a lift ticket?

Finally got out on the mountain this morning. KT-22 was slated to open shortly after I headed out, so jumped in a relatively short line. Was glad I did: it dumped a bunch the last few days but then the temperature spiked up a good bit early this morning and the lower elevation precip was real wet/rain. So the snow even up top was real heavy. A ton of fun for the first few runs but exhausting and fully chundered after a handful of laps.

Hoping for upper mountain tomorrow, since I gotta head out Friday morning.

First run, for those interested in such things. Nothing terribly exciting, and completely unedited because I've got no time for that poo poo. Disregard the fact that I might talk to myself while skiing.

I cannot imagine the chaos in the KT-22 lift line these days on a weekend powder day if squaw didn't have RFID season passes
They've had that for at least 10 years I think? And other resorts are just getting on that now, and failing? Come on. It's not like having to take your pass out is some great burden, but it is sure as poo poo unnecessary.

Ski leases are a thing new to me, pretty nice and easy and cost effective. $100 for each of them for the season. They have both been obsessed with my ski boots the last few days, and my son almost threw a tantrum leaving the shop because he couldn't carry the skis and the boots.

Then as you can see on the drive home my daughter took her shoes off and tried to put the boots back on while in her car seat

Cool, will share. Haven't gotten out with them, yet; it's been snowing nearly every day here since we got them gear and I want to start them out on a nice day (and I've been busy with other things as well).

Still need to grab them some mittens as well, hopefully get them out in the next few weeks. In the meantime, they're really excited about their boots and their helmets.

I finally have a space where I can tune and wax my skis again! Went from a nightly routine in college to... never ever for about 11 years.

Think the 900g box of LF wax I got in college 12 years ago is still good? Bonus points if you can guess where I raced based on how much is left of each color

Nice.

The wax is definitely still good; I had a friend give me some stuff from the 80s that I needed in an emergency and it was still completely fine.

Which doesn't bode well for how good it is for the environment, and I'm glad FIS is moving to banning fluoro in wax, but yeah, use it for sure.

Assuming that's Swix was you were a rockies boy for sure.

I live on LF8. +4 to -4, baby.

Swix, yes, but not Rockies.

What's interesting is that the LF10, which I almost never used, appears to have shrunk significantly. Like maybe half or two thirds as thick as it started. I'm no chemist, so I'm curious what specific compound would have evaporated out of it. Maybe just moisture, but I wouldn't think there'd be much if any in the wax
