I was watching a streamer play this game a bit and the mission where you retrieve the water purifiers had a side rescue the hostage objective. The hostage loving T-posed for most of the game and glided across the floor to the point it looked like escorting a civilian lol. Also, the narrator or whoever is supposed to be telling you objectives is so loving annoying. He does these stupid barks every 5 seconds that just loving repeat the same thing over and over again. L4D had a really interesting thing with pseudo emergent dialogue between the 4 characters that told the player where to go in a pretty naturalistic way, not to mention that the L4D crew has 300 times the charm of these clowns. Also, the AI of human enemies is loving brain dead and the animation in the game overall seems the lowest effort possible. seriously I swear half the zombie animations are C+P from dying light. 60 bux lul

For anyone still in a snit about the price point, there's going to be a "starter edition" that retails for $30 and does not include the Season 2 stuff. Season 2 started releasing yesterday and goes through June 2019. As far as the news release says, first DLC is $6 or so? No idea, might be 6 pounds and more USD. https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2018/11/30/overkills-the-walking-dead-launches-cheaper-starter-edition/

that article says they are 'refocusing on core business' which makes me reluctant to buy the game at ANY price until they confirm that this game is part of their core plan going forward.

explosivo posted:Jesus they're already on season 2 for this game? Season 1 was the first batch of missions with base game, season 2 was planned to be early release for some time I think. It should be support at least for the next six months or so. So Starter Edition will be season 1, season 2/anything beyond will be additional DLC. I haven't followed the dev streams as closely as I could, been busy lately. I imagine they'd want a season 3+ but that will probably depend on ongoing sales.

OTWD is almost certainly core business, it's the only game they've got going.

welp https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2018/12/03/starbreeze-file-for-administration-and-replace-ceo/ Who would have guessed releasing a $30 game at $60 featuring an IP that was massively popular 3 years ago would be a financial disaster.

I have about a half dozen irl friends that play co op games together; we're big fans of payday 2. I'm phone posting and don't have the ability to address the issues around this game right now, but I but I just found this thread and wanted to say we are having a fun, bug free time. Cant wait to play more next chance I get.

It's really tense, the Payday/Vermintide loot drive is good, and the noise mechanic is cool. Idgaf about the walking dad branding, but I don't feel like I'm missing anything by not being invested in that aspect of it. I'm honestly a little surprised the game isn't doing better, but I wasn't planning on playing with pubbies anyway so I'm not worried about it.

the price point is definitely what shied me off on release - i'm normally an absolute sucker for anything co-op but even i was like "sheesh, 60 bucks? maybe i'll just let mount and blade or CK2 bite me again."

It certainly captures the "failure cascade" feeling of payday where things were fine just ten seconds ago and then two or three unfortunate decisions were made one after another and whelp, time to see how many of the four players are going to get out of this zombie gauntlet alive. The last mission we won ended with all of us apart, individually navigating a map that was essentially made of zombies, and we were just trying to squeeze through the gaps. And this is the same map, and the same mechanics, that had, for the past hour, our team carefully navigating our way though a neighborhood using stealth and coordination. For a game to have those two scenarios play out, organically, on the same map, is one of the keys to what makes this a great game clearly made by the Payday devs; that's a quality nearly unique to Overkill's games even among the broader co-op fps genre. If you're not in the discord join up, I still have guys to level and such. I hope the studio collapsing isn't to bad, and someone can buy them cheap and continue service but even if this was it with season 2, I've got like a hundred coop fun hours, I can't be real mad.

starbreeze is overkill's publisher, they aren't the developer in any way - but still, that doesn't mean nothing's wrong. we all remember what happened to Relic when THQ Nordic collapsed.

THQ Nordic is the current company formerly known as Nordic Games that aquired a bunch of THQ's assets and name.

Starbreeze and Overkill are functionally the same entity; Overkill was basically the branding on Starbreeze's internal devteam. The sort of silver lining on this is that this means Overkill, and OTWD, are the project most likely to see continued support.

Dangit, I'm now considering giving this game a shot because of both Starbreeze having to restructure to not die and $30 pack. Coming off of Payday 2, I guess how different is this besides the zombos? Can I run around as a drunk fucker and click

This game does not like it when you shot gun unsilenced, but it isn't exactly an instant failure even on the hardest difficulty if you go super loud. The problem mostly comes in not getting caught in a swarm cascade and making sure to not gently caress up royally if its a mission where you have to escort someone to the exit to win.

# ? Dec 4, 2018 11:23 |

Unlike payday2, you can often stall things out by climbing up onto something where the zombies cant reach you. It doesnt solve the problem of what you're going to do when you climb down again, but it definitely helps, especially since dead players will continue to respawn while you wait up there.

Gonna call it now for anyone who has anything to do with OWTD tomorrow, I'm gonna be drinking and playing video game all day tomorrow and I am willing to help you do what you need to do. Just tag me and we're at it. The worst I can do is say no. I've gotta do some commentary for an LP early but aside from that, let's hit some zombiehumans. Does the affinity characters have with the various weapon groups mean anything beyond what's contained in their skill trees? Like is there an inherent damage bonus? I dont like being limited in my selections, but I want to have a clearer idea of what exactly I'm giving up by not equipping, say, a SMG as the medic lady. When checking a gun as a character, does the damage stat reflect any bonus that character may give?

I've only been playing on Normal so maybe it changes later, but per-bullet damage seems like it should be relatively low priority and 10% isn't that bad.

Yeah, I can live with that. And it's not even that I dislike the SMG (I'm actually still really feeling out each gun vs zombies, which I take as a good sign for the game. I know I prefer sniper rifles for humans.), it's just that I'm going to be playing one character for the duration of my time with the game and I cant stand restricting myself to the guns the character gets a bonus with. But it sounds like I shouldn't really worry about that.

I never cared much for the styrk 88 pistol when clicking on the police, but I just used it in a base defense mission and it's the best gun I've found so far in terms of having a large magazine, killing in one headshot, and reliably hitting that headshot with every hit. Looks like the game is officially dead. I stand by the praise I gave it earlier in the thread but, in final analysis, I think question isn't merely whether a game is good or bad (game was good) but whether or not it's as good as the time and money spent making it suggests it should be (probably not).
