stay tuned for CGI Stan Lee in Avengers 5!

http://www.tmz.com/2018/11/12/stan-lee-dead-dies-marvel-comics/

quote:

Stan Lee, the man who co-created Marvel Comics, has died ... Stan's daughter tells TMZ.

We're told an ambulance rushed to Lee's Hollywood Hills home early Monday morning and he was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. We're told that's where he died.

Lee had suffered several illnesses over the last year or so -- he had a bout of pneumonia and vision issues.

Stan started Marvel with Jack Kirby in 1961 with The Fantastic Four. He went on to create Spider-Man, Black Panther, The Incredible Hulk, X-Men, Iron Man and The Avengers.

Stan made cameo appearances in all of the Marvel movies.

Lee had a rocky relationship with Marvel once the company went full-tilt Hollywood. He sued the company in 2002 for royalties he said he was owed for the first "Spider-Man" movie. Three years later he settled the case for $10 million.

"Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse" is the latest installment of the film's franchise and will be released next month.

Lee is survived by his daughter, J.C. His wife of 69 years, Joan, died in 2017.

J.C. tells TMZ, "My father loved all of his fans. He was the greatest, most decent man."

Lee was 95.

RIP

Stan's the definition of the American Dream, in some ways. Teenager gets a a part-time job when he's like, 16. Works his way up the ranks, benefits from nepotism and good timing, uses his charisma, talent and cunning to end up running the drat company, and becomes an icon in the industry.

Him and Jagger used to have a contest to see who could get with more ladies, last Stan checked, he was way ahead.

Stan screwed over folks with his often revisionist bombast, but he and the Marvel Bullpen really refashioned comics. I can only imagine what it must have felt like to see poo poo like the Blade and the X-Men become big hits, then to see the out of left field success of Iron Man, and the universal praise for Black Panther.

Seems like the dude had a bad run since his wife died, though. I hope his final days were peaceful.

Congratulations!
Super bummed to wake up to this. Dude brought joy to millions with his work and got to see his characters grow into a cornerstone of pop culture. We'd all be lucky to live a life 1/10th as meaningful.

Not looking forward to nerds feeling the need to argue "Don't forget about Jack Kirby!" any time anyone expresses sadness today.

I do not wear this mask to protect me. I wear it to protect you from me.

In the latest interviews he seemed ready to die.

His legacy is freeing comics from the mindset that they were written for children. Marvel's cohesive universe was a byproduct of having one guy in the center of things and also that he needed to promote other books by having ceaseless cameos and crossovers. He knew even when the books exploded that there was potential in using the characters in movies and it's good that he lived long enough to see it.

Yeah. It's possible that he took more credit that he deserves- I'm not going to debate that itt- but from absolutely everything I've heard, he was a decent human being.

A shame that his last years were the way they were, with vultures tearing apart his estate.

Stan was a show man and story teller and as much as people rightfully credit the likes of Kirby and Ditko, you needed a man like Lee to hype up the items they we're selling. Lee's bombastic style made sure everyone knew about Marvel.

Its going to be a little creepy if his Excelsior recordings will just find their way into more films and games after he's dead, but this is what happens when comicbook grandpa gives the last decade and a half of his life to like a billion movies and tie ins.

Neil Gaiman put it best, that Stan was the "happy huckster comics needed".

I'm going to feel lovely about Stan's passing for a while. I figured out a while back that, directly and indirectly, he may have been responsible for more of my happy moments in this lifetime than any other individual. His reach in comics, movies, TV shows, and all those creatives who got their start in those fields, and all those who were then inspired by them in turn... he was the rock whose ripples through modern artistic endeavour will be felt for a very long time.

An absolute titan. Excelsior, you magnificent bastard.

Just a striding through Kamen Rider...
Stan Lee had maybe the most amazing creative hot streak in all of American culture history. For some reason, starting in the 1960s, he had the pulse of America's youth at his fingertips. Everything Marvel did in the silver age was pure GOLD, hit, after hit, after HIT. That success has never been duplicated, even by Stan Lee himself. Stan Lee wasnt all of it, but he was a invaluable ingredient to that magic. RIP

Heh... Spider-man... Web searches... That's funny. I should've trademarked that one. Could've made a mint.
Well, this is the worst news of the year.

I know Kirby and Ditko were great artists, but it's no chance that their best work was done while together with Stan. He was a really great writer, and an even better promoter of comic books and the fandom.

I'll be drinking tonight in his honor, hoping that he's now in Valhalla, talking with Jack about new and exciting stories.

Pretty sure without Stan intervening, Martin Goodman was gonna close up shop at one point. Stan talked him out of it.

Fun fact: Stan's main job in WWII was making comic strips and short films encouraging soldiers to avoid VD.

So it’s finally happened. All in all, I can’t be too sad about this, since he lived such a long life and left a truly enormous mark on pop culture. Shame about his mistreatment at the hands of his caretakers, though. I can only hope his last moments were significantly more pleasant.

Long Live The King!

Roy Thomas saw Stan this past weekend, one of the last people besides his family to see him probably.

Roy Thomas posted:

I’m sadder than I can say that Stan has died… even though I know, from my recent phone conversations with him, that he was more than ready to leave this Earth. I’m so grateful that, by sheer circumstance, I got to spend a half hour or so with him this past Saturday, less than 48 hours before he passed away.

At that time, it was obvious that he lacked much of the old Stan Lee energy that everybody had got to know at conventions and in movie cameos, but when I asked him about future cameos, he expressed a real interest in making them, if he could find a way to do it without their being too much trouble. He asked me about Dann and all the animals on our place (Dann had, at his request, sent him a DVD we made for him a couple of years ago), and got fairly animated when talking about his battles with publisher Martin Goodman over doing Spider-Man.

I opined as how maybe the one important creative decision Goodman ever made was when he commissioned Stan to create a super-hero group back in 1961. Stan seemed to get a kick out of that. He posed for a couple of pictures with me, and then the last one with me and my friend and manager John Cimino, who had worked (in concert with Stan’s buddy and handler Jon Bolerjack) to arrange for Stan and me to get together one more time. But I wish I could look forward to seeing him and sparring around with him again. Still, I consider myself so very lucky to have known and worked with him for so many years… one of the most important mythmakers of the 20th century.
