 In the latest interviews he seemed ready to die.

His legacy is freeing comics from the mindset that they were written for children. Marvel's cohesive universe was a byproduct of having one guy in the center of things and also that he needed to promote other books by having ceaseless cameos and crossovers. He knew even when the books exploded that there was potential in using the characters in movies and it's good that he lived long enough to see it.
