Not a movie, but one of my yearly favorites is the radio play version of the Sherlock Holmes Adventure of Blue Carbuncle, a case where a precious gem is found inside a Christmas goose. Not just a dry reading of the short story, this is part of a series of fully produced radio plays of each case, often improving on the original to create a richer story. If a Victorian Christmas Eve mystery sounds pretty good to you, I highly recommend it! It even has some legitimately heartwarming moments.

I especially like the subplot of Holmes being cranky because he can't admit that he doesn't want to spend Christmas alone, it's a subtle but really good addition to the story.

Also, count me in as someone who watches the MST3K Christmas episodes every year. It doesn't quite feel like Christmas until I've watched those. Drop 'em, Droppo!

Such a solid holiday movie. Phil Hartman is amazing in it. I am surprised this doesn’t have a huge holiday cult following.

I watched the new hand-drawn animated Christmas film that Netflix produced, Klaus, and I really liked it. Great animation, a relatively unique Origin-of-Christmas story, great voice acting, and cute art direction. I enjoyed it a lot, and expect it to be a solid holiday favorite.

edit: I will say, there are three musical queue's that are insane choices, and were really distracting. I don't expect those moments to age all that well, but whatever.

Jingle All the Way loving RULES. My favorite thing about that movie is the dude who plays TurboMan was also in this really weird miniseries about some goofy 1950s sci-fi actor getting transported into space. He became a hero saving the galaxy, including using a "secret password" that was really a crummy commercial in his show ("Choco-Socko, it's boffo!" turning into "Ockos-ococh, sti offob!"). My little bro and I still quote that line to each other whenever we see Jingle All the Way.

I usually watch 2 or 3 holiday movies every year, and rotate them so I don't get tired of any particular one. This year I've only watched Dial Code Santa Claus, and will probably watch Krampus tonight. Also I haven't seen White Christmas in a couple years so I might watch that again. Last year it was Rare Exports, Christmas Evil, and Love, Actually.

Bumping this thread to the top because Hallmark have started and it's not even Thanksgiving. Or Halloween.

As I posted in the Letterboxd thread before being kindly pointed this way, in an effort to become sick of Christmas before the real undoubtedly awful 2020 version of the real thing arrives, I've decided to do what every sane individual would do... and that's watch all 40 Hallmark premieres over the upcoming weeks. Due to the formulaic nature of the movie, I'll be crafting formulaic reviews and including both a rating on how horny the movie is, and how to best distribute your alcohol consumption throughout. You will be pleased to hear that the submission of my review for one of the opening nights movies did not pass the muster of the Hallmark checkmark app.

Saturday started with a bang, but alas no banging.

Christmas Tree Lane **½

From the director of 'I Spit on Your Grave' and 'I Spit on your Grave 2' comes 'Christmas Tree Lane', Hallmark's first 'Miracle of Christmas' movie of the 2020 season.

She's a store owner with exposed shoulders who hawks tacky briefcase turntables to Instagram influencers, while teaching a single student to sing. He's a developer with impeccable hair who's fresh back in town and pays zero attention to his job. Together they must join forces to save the street from redevelopment by his father's company, who never really throws up much in the way of opposition.

Laugh along with the characters despite nobody telling jokes, get confused when Nate sees Meg handing out flyers before asking her what she's doing, gasp at the hand drawn plans they draw that never seem to get more elaborate over time.

Will the performance of an easily forgettable Christmas song be enough to save the day?

Horniness level: **** off the charts horny that almost completely overtakes the actual plot

Ill-advised Drinking Game: Drink every time someone says 'Christmas Tree Lane'.

Jingle Bell Bride **

From the writer of 'Summer Shark Attack' and 'Psycho Escort' comes 'Jingle Bell Bride', Hallmark's first 'Countdown to Christmas' movie of the 2020 season.

She's a high profile wedding planner from New York who lacks the tact to be nice to the one person she needs to. He's the small town Alaskan guy who exists solely to explain how a town that should not be able to exist functions. Together they must join forces to transport a rare flower back to the big city for a wedding that will be on the front cover of 'every magazine', including Guns & Ammo.

Struggle to understand the opening conversation due to amount of New York City background noise, stare at your watch when the 3 days spent in Alaska seems to be moving at real time, roll your eyes back at the world's least convincing video call ever.

Will the town survive under the looming threat of capitalism before she gets back on the plane?

Horniness level: * It may be snowing outside, but this is going to be one dry Christmas.

Ill-advised Drinking Game: Drink every time a phone call is missed or dropped.

It's a very silly petition. Apple will supposedly have windows where it will be free to stream the specials. I understand that classics like that should be easily available to the lowest common denominator (people with basic cable and local channels), but it's weird people are shocked by this when Sesame Street was bought by HBO and taken off PBS.

I feel like come January those movies all go on sale for dirt cheap all over the place, so people should just buy a physical copy if they care. I thought about doing that for all the stop motion classics I like (and forgot when January came around). But that's a simple solution and doesn't involve raging against a faceless machine.

Sesame street is still on PBS though. It's just that shows on PBS are shown 9 months after they're on HBO. It sucks, but honestly, would anyone really even notice that SS is showing 9 month old shows?

I've planned out all the movies I'm going to watch for the rest of the year (all of them, my brain likes nice orderly lists)

Here's the Christmas movies (and Christmas-adjacent movies) I've slotted in each week (I'm not listing the non-holiday ones otherwise this would be a lot longer)

Week starting 16 November (this felt like the best week to start putting in Christmas movies, and starting out with some kinda low key ones)
- Edward Scissorhands (rewatch; as part of my Burton chronological watch-through, I can't remember if this is very Christmassy)
- Holidays (new to me; a horror anthology that features a bunch of other holidays apart from Christmas)
- Lego Star Wars Holiday Special (new to me; I'm not sure if this is a feature film, but I'm going to check it out on D+ when it goes up)

Week starting 23 November
- Better Off Dead (new to me; I don't know much about this, apparently it's a black comedy about a suicidal teen at Christmas?)
- Shazam (rewatch; heartwarming superhero comedy that's entirely centered around Christmas; one of the best DCEU movies)
- Jingle Jangle (new to me; a new musical on Netflix that looks fun as heck)
- Planes, Trains and Automobiles (rewatch; I love this comedy, it's not Christmas I know, but very holidays-y, I'll watch it on Thanksgiving)

Week starting 30 November
- Last Christmas (new to me; the one with the George Michael music from last year, it looks alright, I like sappy stuff around this time of year)
- The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe (rewatch; silly and bad CGI but it's a total guilty pleasure for me, and Santa Claus is in it so it counts)
- Three Days of the Condor (new to me; I know nothing about this apart from the fact it's the movie that made Shane Black want to make Christmas action movies)
- The Family Man and/or Serendipity (new to me; this slot is for a sappy Christmas dramedy, I’m not sure which one I want to see yet, Nicolas Cage is making me lean towards the first one)

Week starting 7 December
- Batman Returns (rewatch; as part of my Burton chronological watch-through, this movie is the most twisted Christmas movie and it’s great - I might do the audio commentary)
- The Great Escape (new to me; this is a UK Christmas staple? I’m not sure why, I don’t think it actually has anything to do with Christmas but I’m intrigued)
- Anna and the Apocalypse (rewatch; I love this bizarre 2018 Christmas zombie musical, and I’m going to check out the extended cut for the first time)
- Scrooge (1951; new to me; every year I fit in at least one version of A Christmas Carol, this is meant to be one of the best)
- How the Grinch Stole Christmas (new to me; the short film, I’m going to finally watch a Grinch thing! Next year I’ll follow up with one of the recent film versions)

Week starting 14 December
- An All Dogs Christmas Carol (new to me; the third All Dogs Go to Heaven movie, don’t judge, I live for this trash)
- The Holiday (new to me; a life/home-swap romantic comedy with Jack Black? Sure!)
- Christmas in Connecticut (new to me; actually set in New York City I think, I added this for the decade it was made and also because I want more NYC Christmas movies)
- How to Train Your Dragon short film (new to me; the one from last year set after the events of the third movie, I can’t remember its title though)
- Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas (new to me; the Jim Henson non-Muppets TV special, apparently it’s really cute and good)

Week starting 21 December
- The Nightmare Before Christmas (rewatch; as part of my Burton chronological watch-through, although he didn’t direct it of course - I might do the audio commentary)
- The Muppet Christmas Carol (rewatch; my favourite Christmas movie of all time, I watch it almost every year)
- Holiday Inn (new to me; for some sappy classic goodness - I think this movie is set around the year but has pivotal Christmas scenes and of course the famous song White Christmas)
- (maybe) Die Hard (rewatch; don't care if it's a reddit meme people are angry about, it's a really good movie and it's set on Xmas Eve)

And yeah, there's a ton of non-holiday films in each of those weeks too, as I like to keep it mixed up. For instance, I never watch Christmas films on Christmas Day itself. This year I think I'll watch Dr. No with my family, to begin the James Bond series again from the start.

I think I'll save my Shane Black 6-movie Christmas bonanza idea for next year.

I know it's an annoying meme, but large parts of the movie are based around it being Christmas. He's in town for Christmas; it's a Christmas party; there's Christmas jokes (Now I have a Machine gun; Ho-Ho-Ho!); the movie's got Christmas music. It's not like Time Cop where in the background you notice it's Halloween or something, it contributes to the story.

There's nothing Christmas-y about The Great Escape (in fact, they celebrate the 4th of July in it). I think it just became one of those regular airing things that became a tradition. Like when I was a kid, the local CBS station would show Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Thanksgiving morning, so I considered that a Thanksgiving film, even though it has nothing to do with the holiday.
