First, I must confess that over the last few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizens Councillor or the Ku Klux Klanner but the white moderate who is more devoted to order than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says, "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically feels that he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time; and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season." Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection. MLK

Eej posted:Wasn't it more well off whiteys that voted Trump in? Yeah people go on about the stupid rural poors voting against their interests but I think they'd react very well to a Democratic party that removed its head from its rear end and stopped completely abandoning them. And if a certain minority of leftists stopped talking down to them too. And just to be perfectly clear the way to do this is to be openly left on economic issues and not Republican-lite on all issues like McCaskill.

Eej posted:Wasn't it more well off whiteys that voted Trump in? No. Objectively no. (well, the whitey part, yes?) Nationwide, among the wealthiest people, Trump had a 1-2 point margin. Among the most poor people, Hillary had a wide margin. (Turns out minorities make less money in the USA). This did not apply to rural poor, who overwhelmingly voted Trump! Trump cleaned up in the $50K-100K annual income envelope. That's where some people get the "don't forget the middle class" thing, but also it's important to remember geography and demographics. He cleaned up hard in that area in, say, the Southeast and less so in California. Among the biggest predictors of voting Trump: White, male, no degree, suburban/rural, protestant, married.

Ah that classic Democratic refrain: "you're not worth our time" It's not like there's an immense right wing corporate brainwashing apparatus at work or anything. Or a concerted effort to suppress voters who might think it's worth their time to vote for someone who's actually looking out for them despite living in districts where it appears everything is stacked against them. my kinda ape fucked around with this message at 19:32 on Dec 30, 2018 |

It's worth noting that rural Missouri is the meth capitol of the country, and will actively vote for the people who run on campaigns that tell them that the candidate will "stand up to the thugs and gays from Saint Louis and Kansas City".

mlmp08 posted:I’m not sure if you’re joking, drunk posting, or just an idiot? My point is that saying "gently caress you we don't care about you" is just as bad a strategy as trying to be Republican-lite and "gently caress you we don't care about you" has implicitly been the Democratic platform for rural areas, or sometimes explicitly as we've seen in this thread. It's dogshit messaging and they will never make inroads in places they won't at least pretend to care about. The whole "deplorables" comment wasn't untrue but it probably lost Hillary the election. "gently caress you we don't care about you" is the actual Republican platform but since they at least pretend to care it doesn't really matter when the other party isn't saying they'll be any different.
