I work in academia, and have worked for a for real terrible sexpest and worked for and with a lot of normal but definitely more socially awkward individuals, some on the spectrum, some just compulsive. The field attracts that sort.

Based just on what's available I'm not getting a true creep vibe from it. Dude might be awkward and made some others feel uncomfortable which is the kind of thing he needs to be called out on, but not seeing a lot just from this.

Why is it so hard for famous people to just say “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean it / I’ve since learned from my mistakes, it won’t happen again, and I apologize for all the harm and anguish I’ve caused.”?

Instead of going “here’s what really happened.”?

Very true.

As a scientist who is also married to a scientist, we're especially bad about this. We want to nitpick, analyze and explain everything and it's hard to shut it off. My wife and I both have had to realize we need to just not always perfectly understand why everything that might have happened did and just stop and say "ok that was hosed up and my fault and I'm sorry" etc.

Edit: also just like I am doing right now we like to Devils Advocate literally anything and everything.

My graduate school hosed up my insurance enrollment and I didn't have dental when I thought I did. So I had a filling break and had to get an emergency root canal / crown. All in all it ran about $4500. I was only pulling in about $2k / month after taxes in grad school and had no real savings to speak of. I had to borrow about $1k from a friend just so I could make rent and keep from getting evicted. I spent the next 8 months living on essentially rice and beans etc just to get back to normal and make the rest of the payments. I looked into suing my school but that would have cost more $$$ and with an unsure outcome. I didn't want punitive damages, I just wanted them to fix what they hosed up (did not actually enroll me in the poo poo I was supposed to be enrolled in).

It loving sucked and without a richer friend to bail me out I would have become homeless just because a loving root canal.

Even if she's a pretty meh congressperson if she just keeps owning idiots online it's cool with me.

Like, even if she doesn't get much accomplished at the actual legislative level, her being popular with the younger voters is a nice way to ensure that the party keeps some pressure back to the left instead of just constantly trying to be the GOP-lite wing.

CRITICAL LIFE LESSON .
"Do you know how to catch wild pigs?"..
There was a chemistry professor in a large college that had some exchange students in the class. One day while the class was in the lab, the professor noticed one young man, an exchange student, who kept rubbing his back and stretching as if his back hurt.
The professor asked the young man what was the matter. The student told him he had a bullet lodged in his back. He had been shot while fighting communists in his native country who were trying to overthrow his country's government and install a new communist regime. In the midst of his story, he looked at the professor and asked a strange question. He asked: "Do you know how to catch wild pigs?"
The professor thought it was a joke and asked for the punch line. The young man said that it was no joke. "You catch wild pigs by finding a suitable place in the woods and putting corn on the ground. The pigs find it and begin to come every day to eat the free food".
"When they are used to coming every day, you put a fence down one side of the place where they are used to coming. When they get used to the fence, they begin to eat the corn again and you put up another side of the fence". "They get used to that and start to eat again.
You continue until you have all four sides of the fence up with a gate in the last side". "The pigs, which are used to the free corn, start to come through the gate to eat that free corn again. You then slam the gate on them and catch the whole herd".
"Suddenly the wild pigs have lost their freedom. They run around and around inside the fence, but they are caught. Soon they go back to eating the free corn. They are so used to it that they have forgotten how to forage in the woods for themselves, so they accept their captivity."
The young man then told the professor that is exactly what he sees happening in America . The government keeps pushing us toward Communism/Socialism and keeps spreading the free corn out in the form of programs such as supplemental income, tax credit for unearned income, tax exemptions, tobacco subsidies, dairy subsidies, payments not to plant crops (CRP), welfare entitlements, medicine, drugs, etc., while we continually lose our freedoms, just a little at a time as the government forces us to participate in many of these programs whether or not we want to.
One should always remember two truths: There is no such thing as a free lunch, and you can never hire someone to provide a service for you cheaper than you can do it yourself. If you see that all of this wonderful government "help" is a problem confronting the future of democracy in America, you might want to share this with your friends.
God help us all when the gate slams shut!

Quote for today: "The problems we face today are there because the people who work for a living are now outnumbered by those that vote for a living."

Any true Chemistry professor would have been like "what the gently caress are you talking about this is chemistry shut the gently caress up or leave" about 3 seconds into that story.

I mean a combine already costs a cool half mil just by itself, I’m pretty sure you could convince most farmers that for a 50% increase and the ability to run longer operating hours and they can fire a few operators the cost would be worth it.

The entire self driving car thing isn’t much of an argument. Combines move slower, can be geofenced into a known area and largely won’t be moving faster than a brisk trot. To say the challenges between getting the two techs is radically different is probably an understatement. I doubt combines are going to have to worry about other combines brake checking them just to be cocksuckers unless some farmer fires up the battlebot protocol in an attempt to light a shitload of money on fire at rate unseen outside of the DoD.
