Only good thing about December is the days start getting longer in 3 weeks.

From the last thread talking about Laptops/tablets,

quote:

Also not reparable at all, and you won't be able to clean the fans in these (unless they dramatically changed something from the 3/4), if that matters to you. I've enjoyed my SP3 a ton, but I would never buy one again.
The last couple gens have no fans for the i5 based (or lower) CPUs and are truly silent and reliable.

Point still absolutely stands though that opening up for repair is difficult at best, but they are extremely reliable and great units. i5 w/8GB is the sweet spot for value, IMHO. You can always stick in a big MicroSD card for bulk storage.

The most reliable stud finder I've used has been half a dozen neodymium magnets. I just wave some around on the wall until they stick to something and then repeat above and below the one that stuck. It doesn't take very long to create a line of magnets showing where the drywall got nailed or screwed to the stud.

I never thought of doing that. I presume you just put a cloth between it and the drywall as your moving the magnet?

I drag the heel of my hand across the wall while holding the end off the magnet the tiniest bit off the surface off the wall and when I feel a tug I gently let them stick. I've never marked up the wall doing that. They're strong enough that I can easily feel them pulling towards nails and screws and they firmly hold on through any compound and paint but they don't dig in at all. They're 1/4" x 1/4" x 1" bar magnets (supposedly n48 but they were from amazon so who knows) that I bought for general magnet based fuckery but somehow I ended up using them as a stud finder when I got pissed at my 'real' stud finder. The size works out well as there's a lot of magnet to hold onto but the narrow end is just about the same size as the head of drywall nail or screw. The really small disk magnets would probably be difficult to get back off the wall without leaving a mark.

I've got a couple regular stud finders and the one I got at Costco, which is similar but not exactly the same as the one meatpimp posted, is pretty good but I still find the magnets to be more precise. Sometimes it's hard to find that first fastener though and a stud finder gets you in the ballpark pretty quick.

I have a decent studfinder too but that's a neat trick.

Belt test for Taekwondo today. Pretty sure I did OK because my instructor came up to me afterwards and told me I did good (though it's not for her to judge, it's the masters), but the coolest part was we did blackbelt testing today as well which only happens 2x per year, and one was a "mature" woman, I'd say 50-ish, going for her 3rd dan/degree. She's been 2nd for many years, probably 10+, but decided to do it several months back and trained drat hard.

There is something cool as hell seeing a ~50ish woman breaking multiple boards with knife hand and kicks, and then fighting off a 2 on 1 of 3rd dan blackbelts in sparring coming after her. She was getting exhausted, being constantly chased down by them and after about 3 minutes of SOLID hard core sparring (which is god drat exhausting even if it doesn't sound like much) the master said "score one more point and we'll call it" the crowd went full in cheering her on and about 15 seconds after she did an awesome high section punch on one of them, a 21 year old dude, and just landed it perfect. Snapped the guys head back and surprised him. The crowd of about 75-100 people, plus us students went nuts.

Was fantastic to watch something like that with a woman old enough to be a grandma to kick rear end.

She's happily married and one of her daughters is 2nd dan as well so your odds are probably pretty slim with mom... but pretty sure the daughter is single so that might be a possibility?

and if she isn't receptive she would probably beat the poo poo out of you if she thought you had a thing for mom

Seriously though, it really was cool.

Most people in the martial arts are younger, but our club has a healthy population of 30+ of various belts so it's a ton of fun and we're pretty tight. Today for my test I was partnered with a 16-17 year old which is close to my height (although I probably outweigh him by 75+lbs) and to be fair he got a really good kick in on me in sparring because he's fast which got a good reaction from the crowd, but after that I was after him, blocking the hell out of him and then he was defensive but fun as hell.

I used to actually be anti giftcard (although maybe not quite as rabid) as I thought they reeked of pure laziness, but I've mellowed a lot. As I've become older I know that I've become impossible to buy for so I typically get gift cards and I'm appreciative of it for many of the reasons stated earlier. I far, far prefer that over some tacky poo poo I'll end up throwing away, donating or just re-gifting to someone and cash would just go straight into my wallet into general cash.

Also, they are a godsend for people with addiction issues that can't be trusted with straight cash.

Of course I work with people who brag about flying across the country to take a deposition a week after giving birth, so you see what I'm dealing with here.
The only thing I hate even more are policies where employers demand doctors notes and have minimal paid sick days which force people to come to work sick.

It is indeed an old black brick. To be honest, I'll probably box it up and sell it than put any time/$$/effort into it. I tried a couple of old games (Super Zaxxon, Ghostbusters, Battlezone cartridge) and indeed, the 12 year old me playing those games has fonder memories than the mid 40's year old me playing them in the present.

Hey, totally OT question here but I know we've got a good cross section of people here so hoped someone might be able to help me. It's a MS Outlook question that's been bothering me for years.

You know how you start a new email and type in the "TO:" address field, outlook goes through your contacts and gives you auto fill options? For some reason, Outlook mysteriously drops autofilling some names periodically for no reason that I can tell. Even if it's a contact I use with some regularity. I search through the contacts and the contact name is still there, so I am either forced to manually start a new email from the contact page or just find a previous email and do it from there.

Any ideas wtf is happening? Drives me up the wall.

I believe it's Office 2013.

What recipe do you use?

It's a simple, basic family recipe that's nothing fancy at all. MOst measurements are "ish" but as long as you don't go crazy off it'll still be good.

6-8 bananas (frozen OK if thawed and drain off excess water)
2 eggs
2/3 cup white sugar
1/3 cup butter (cool is OK, cut into small pieces if so)
1 healthy tbsp-ish of REAL vanilla extract
I add in about 2 or so tbsp of honey as well.

blend above all together

Afterwards, add in:
1/2 tsp salt
1/4-1/2 tsp baking soda
2 tsp baking powder
1-3/4 cups white flour

mix all together really well, about 5 minutes straight. Let sit for approx 15-20 min

Pour into well greased (either butter or spray) loaf pan. Here I will usually drizzle a nice bead of honey along the center which is wear it breaks open in the oven.

Bake @ 350. It takes me about 1:15 where I live. Test with toothpick starting around 1hr to narrow it down baking time.

e: It's a good base recipe to experiment with too. I've tried adding cocoa, molasses, etc, with varying levels of success.

This room is the priority since it's where we'll be sleeping but I'm on track and should be able to knock out a could rooms by friday.

This flooring has the underlay already attached.

I mean around the windows and door. Are you doing something different there?

Also, you probably know this already, but make sure when you lay it that the floor isn't tight against the wall, there should be a bit of a gap there. The baseboards will hide it.

That built-on underlay isn't great but it's better than nothing. You might want to get a piece of thin underlay and try the floor with/without it and see if you prefer it with. A flooring store might give you a few sq/ft to try, or even if not buy some. It can make a pretty big difference.
e: It also helps if your subfloor isn't perfect
