I'm just imagining the amount of joy NSW voters would have, going to the polls and then going again 3 weeks later. I'm sure they would love it and it wouldn't impact the NSW vote at all

I’m not sure I see how it’s politically expedient for the crossbenchers to abstain. I would have thought they’d be siding with Labor to build cachet for the Government presumptive. Are they hoping for concessions ala Katter to bolster their reelection campaigns?

You get some of them (Greens, Wilkie) that usually vote with the Opposition, and then you get some (Katter) that usually vote with the Govt. The rest of them are either Liberal defectors who won't do things to destabilise the party, or are in seats where voting against the Govt would not look good for them.

Mostly it's just self-interest.

I don’t understand why the crossbenchers (Wilkie and Bandt excluded) haven’t done more to increase parliament sitting days. Surely they would like to actually do something with their influence.

They abstained from the vote on this because they didn't want to play politics. So I guess we should be expecting their resignations any day now

I just don't get it - if Labor did vote against their own bill, they'd look like huge arseholes, lose some support and the Coalition'd be able to go on about Labor chaos for weeks

Was there some kind of threat to the Government if the bill didn't pass the Lower House?

They don't want it to pass as-is and don't have the numbers to ensure that the amendments they want get in

What is mastodon? Tell me more!

mastodon is a platform similar to twitter, but instead of being owned and operated by a single entity, it is a federation of independent servers (or instances) run by everyday people. it's basically socialised social media.

you can follow and talk to people across the federation of instances just as if it was one platform. having lots of smaller, interest/community based servers help spread the load of administration and moderation tasks. it also helps prevent things like ads (because it has no need to turn a profit) and nazis (each instance has its own code of conduct, and if there is a nazi server, it can be blocked wholly from appearing on your instance by the admins).

a lot of people are flocking to it because of the tumblr changes announced today, but its also a good place to post about auspol and stuff. i hope more people embrace it

you can also see more about what mastodon is generally here: https://joinmastodon.org/

Hi Meryl,

My name [name], I live in [place] and I'm a fourth year Social Work student at the University of [place]. I am emailing in regards to the Assistance and Access Bill. I oppose this bill because of the damage it will cause to the tech industry and the security of every single person who uses the internet. This bill will damage our economy and damage Australia's reputation as a leader in innovative technological advances.

The Assistance and Access Bill deliberately creates vulnerabilities in honest online communications and will be exploited by people who wish to do harm to those who are not well versed in online safety. This bill may help to catch criminals who don't take proper precautions in safeguarding their privacy but it will definitely 100% undermine the security of all Australians and create a dangerous precedent.

Thank you for your time,

Hopefully that sounds good enough to be taken seriously

Do we have figures on the numbers of informal votes in the Vic election? I was looking at one of the districts and it seemed pretty big.

I'd be interested to see if it's trending up or down - I think there were some changes to the way you could fill in a ballot this time, but I don't remember if that was last election or not

They're a payday loan lender. They make their money off late fees, debt, and people's misery. If someone can't afford to buy something today, they probably can't afford to start paying it off in two weeks, or fully pay it off in two months.

The only reason why you might use it is if you have an critical emergency, no money, and your paycheck is in a week. But if you are living paycheck to paycheck, you probably can't budget additional money for the repayments. So it likely won't help you in an emergency. There is pretty much no reason to ever use them or support their scum gently caress ways.

The four categories on the website's top bar are 'consumer info', 'retailer info', 'help' and 'responsible spending'. When one of your four help categories is for addicts, you are a business facilitating addiction.

I'm part of a team implementing Afterpay/Zippay etc into a large retailer here. From what I understand, they get a margin of 5%-6% of each sale from the retailer, plus a monthly fee for the consumer if they have outstanding debt. No interest applied for a minimum term and then a HUGE amount of interest (somewhere like 20%) applied if you don't pay it all back in time.

If you're fiscally responsible, it could be an alright way to use easy credit. If you're not, you're hosed, and you're turbofucked.
