Hello this is the thread where we can talk about old people territory wrestling.

the biggest stars of the 70's and 80's (and i guess before that too, and possibly a bit after)

when tag teams were good and could draw good

Your favorite Territory

post matches and shows and anything else you can think of this is not a complete guide

I wish more of Detroit existed. Their studio shows were Central States levels of not giving a poo poo and everything remotely interesting happened in the arena

Such is the pain of territory wrestling

Super Mario Bros 3

As someone growing up in the dying days of the territories, my feds were Smoky Mountain Wrestling and USWA.

USWA had really bad production values and I remember it being filmed in this weird blue and pink void like it was loving Magicant or something. There were weird dudes like SPELLBINDER and people would throw fireballs at each other a lot.

SMW was a show where like two things happened per episode and they were often dumb. Maybe Tracy Smothers would fight Brian Lee w/ Hilary Clinton-impersonator Tammy Sytch for the thirtieth time in the "BEAT THE CHAMP TV CHALLENGE." Or "Dirty White Boy" Tony Anthony would get beat down by the Heavenly Bodies. Or aged skeleton man "Bullet" Bob Armstrong would show up to fight Jim Cornette under a mask as the man called "The Bullet." COULD IT BE BULLET BOB (it could)?!?!

All this was on a local TV block hosted by a weird couple, Joe Pedicino and Bonnie Blackstone, and they'd also show ECW and eventually some WWF. I won a signed WWF replica belt from their show (it was signed by Pedicino and Blackstone, tho).

When I was younger, the FOX affiliate would show Mid-South/UWF (then NWA after the sale) at 11:00am followed by WWF Superstars of Wrestling at noon. Still a better programing block than RAW or Smackdown today.

Flipping through some of the other UHF stations, I was able to find World Class, ICW, Wild West Wrestling, the sitcom "Learning the Ropes", and NWA Main Event.

Good times.

And the mercy seat is awaiting,
And I think my head is burning,
And in a way I'm yearning,
To be done with all this measuring of proof.
An eye for an eye
And a tooth for a tooth,
And anyway I told the truth,
And I'm not afraid to die.

This is quite a bit after the territories all died out, but since it's still Memphis I'll post this here as well. Part 2 is the infamous Doug Gilbert shoot, but the bit in part 1 is so loving great it also deserves to be seen:

When I'm researching stuff in newspapers, I always jot down any cards I come across. There are rarely any big names on these, but I did recently uncover a couple of new Moolah matches from 1949, when she was still working as Lillian Ellison.

Here's Dick Murdoch and Dusty Rhodes against Ben Justice and the Stomper from 1970 Detroit.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aa0dJB07j_g

Dark-haired Buddy Rogers from the 1940s. High spots are a pair of dropkicks. The selling on forearm shots is different, too.

I...I'd like to talk to Tom.

An insane angle, one that would cause quite an uproar today. Continental Wrestling.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9XZ-eEW8Fo

Also, while Michael Hayes is a pungent turd, he was a hell of a promo. Here he is turning face in Georgia after Terry Gordy turned on him.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTIIKk4wBVc

Here's Roddy Piper turning face because Don Muraco can't stop messing with Gordon Solie. And also because Ole Anderson tells him how it's gonna be, which is as common of a reason for a heel to turn face as any. Also Georgia.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5EkRCVftTI

And you can't talk territories without a Memphis angle. Ric Flair comes into Memphis, being nice, almost babyface-ish at first. Then Lawler comes out and asks that he be allowed 10 minutes TV time to face Flair, because Ric McCord might be a nice guy but he hasn't earned a shot at Flair. Flair agrees. They use basically the whole hour to build it up, and it's TV magic.

The Funks are coming to Florida. Duck, you sucker!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DXslrmzqq8

Piper cuts a promo on Chavo Guerrero, Sr. in anticipation of a Loser Leaves Town NO DQ match.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mu7SaZcnxRM

Another Memphis angle, with the friendly participation of Nick Bockwinkel and the AWA. $500 a punch, daddy!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WL3LJMQmKpA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmsHSzMIcLU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PUoVjxavJS0

And finally, Roddy Piper and Buddy Rose start their feud. Great for the image of Piper's crew literally using a wheelbarrow to cart around all the gold they have at the start.
