There is no wealth like knowledge, no poverty like ignorance.

It's a new year, which means it's time for another Something Awful Baldur's Gate Ironman Challenge! Get ready to image search for portrait images and click the reroll button in character creation before striking out for honor and immortality. Who will be the Bhaalspawn that survive in 2019 to claim victory? Who will be the ones getting torn open by wolves, perforated by bandit arrows, or Magic Missile'd to death before they can level up? It's time to find out and get started!

You can buy the Enhanced Edition of the game and its sequels on Steam or on GOG.com. The EE editions are also available for tablets and have modern conveniences like widescreen support and zooming in and out of the game. Some people prefer to play the non-EE editions, but they're harder to come by. The older CD versions can be bought used off Amazon or something.

The Heroes' Gate

Living, Breathing Bhaalspawn
Kratos the Fighter/Cleric is ready to keep murdering gods and chunking nobles in inns.
Selia the Fighter/Mage/Cleric committed an ankheg extinction event and is bending reality with the number of mods installed.
Bill William the Dragon Disciple traipsed through Mutamin's Garden and picked up some neat little wands.
Konan Battlerager the Berserker performed a Salem witch trial for Dynaheir to cheer up Edwin before heading off to the Nashkel Mines.
Vichan the Sorcerer has reached the Friendly Arm Inn after giving the BG1 NPC Project mod the side eye.
Midwich Maniac the Fighter/Mage is soloing through on his spare time, having already gone to the basilisk zone to craft a leather belt.
Taylor Swift the Berserker (Ironling) claims the Celestial Fury +3 katana as her blood prize, but nearly falls to Thaxll'ssillyia the shadow dragon.
Matt Stryker the Transmuter (Ironling) has slain some dragons in Amn, rolling with his sword and skeleton GANGS of homies, and is getting ready to raid the Planar Sphere.
Dalam the Fighter/Cleric may be hygiene-challenged but he sure is tough, having cleared out the Nashkel Mines and surviving a rest in the Firewine Ruins!
Bhaalette the Dragon Disciple (Ironling) has killed a lich, saved some dwarves from undead, and killed trolls, all before breakfast.
The Icewind Dale Party enter the Severed Hand, murder lots of elves, and prepare to fix an astrolabe.
J. S. Mastropiero the Jester and his group of sycophants got over some bad food poisoning and are now looking for an Apple store in Baldur's Gate.

The Graveyard of Gorion's Wards
Vheissu the Wild Mage fell to a bandit's crossbow bolt in Dorn's ambush, and not a Wild Surge as expected.
Hardcore Helena the Fighter/Mage was fried by Silke's Lightning Bolt spell because the witch didn't feel like taking a nap.
Maxine the Conjurer was squashed by the Tome of Constitution's flesh golem guards.
Kel the Fighter/Illusionist felt the backhand of a Beregost ogrillon after Kagain ran off.
Urist the Dwarven Defender also came up short against the Beregost ogrillons. If only they had been elves.
Shawlucia the Sorcerer was unceremoniously pulped by a clay golem in the Lady's Chambers at Chateau Irenicus. A worthy solo attempt on the phone!
George Oscar the Mage/Thief was Feebleminded and mashed by Bassilus.
Baxter the Fighter and his entire party were cut down by Greywolf, the guy no one crosses and lives.
Bichael Torieson the Priest of Lathander was fittingly struck down by his deity's rival, Talos, during a thunderstorm outside while battling the Doomsayer.
Kala the Berserker/Mage (Ironling) wasn't able to go all the way, perishing to the wraiths in Watcher's Keep.
Pleasenodie the Sorceress died a mysterious death.
Dante the Cleric/Ranger became a lawn ornament in Mutamin's Garden.
Baiku Torii the Kensai was overwhelmed by Shandalar's magical energies after attempting to get some payback on the rear end in a top hat wizard's teleporting quest.
Vitus the Cleric/Thief was so thoroughly destroyed in the Cloakwood Mines that the coroner is not sure if it was the several Black Talon ice arrows or a friendly fireball spell that did him in.
Critical Mister the Jester tried to perform incognito among a hostile audience of goblins and was ripped apart critically, as well as physically.
Elissa the Cavalier got out of Candlekeep, said "hello world," and then took the belt fetish ogre's morning star in the face.
Theodoric the Stalker had similar poor luck thanks to that lovable arcane scamp, Tarnesh, not dying at once to a backstab.
Fulda the Necromancer met the same fate as her foster father at Sarevok's hands because he had help of that arrow of detonation-carrying bastard Angelo.
Tantous Tarmin the Transmuter died a well-deserved cursed death trying to protect Neera.
Shorty the Berserker was eviscerated by an ettercap in the Cloakwood. Size doesn't matter to spiders.
The Pebble the Barbarian (Ironman) let his head go into the clouds while soloing the named demons in Watcher's Keep, then literally lost his head due to a vorpal hit from one of them.
Khonsu the Dark Moon Monk was turned into a pincushion in a second bandit ambush, since Elves' Bane decided human arrows were just fine to let through.
Arwa the Berserker forgot where Mutamin's Garden was and is now discovering what it's like to be a pigeon hangout spot.
Ba'ik Toree the Shaman (Ironling) took a deep hit off mynonic shrooms and went on a spirit voyage thanks to a confused Korgan's axe.
Lizzy the Sorceress (Ironman) was slowly, insiduously killed by overconfidence in the Throne of Bhaal fight against Melissan herself. Godhood was this close!
Nareena the Archer set foot in the outside world, and the outside world set foot on her. Specifically the belt ogre.
Malia the Fighter/Mage was bull rushed not by a bull, but by a bear, outside Candlekeep. Yikes!
Warren Zevon the Fighter/Illusionist was zapped by a Lightning Bolt in the Cloakwood Mines.
Katy Perry the Berserker skimped out on armor and got shot by bandits.
Lady Gaga the Berserker pushed her luck but was held in the Candlekeep Catacombs before being killed. At least there is a tomb nearby.
Mi-guk the Fighter/Cleric became a sirine's love slave. Not a bad way to go, considering.
Elvawen the Skald died about as fast as her new music career.
Mon-gol the Blackguard was introduced but implied to be dead somewhere in the south.
Rufus the Conjurer was stabbed to death by kobolds, who were not appreciative of his lullaby.
Rayvek the Kensai/Druid (Siege Breaker) failed a save against one of SCS Lavok's bullshit Contingency instant-kill spells.
Kondor the Dwarven Defender (Ironling) got Shelobed by a gargantuan spider and its eight-legged pals in the Forest of Wyrms.
Sophia the Priestess of Tyr met a surly dwarf in the Red Sheaf Inn in Beregost, who collected her head for a bounty.
Doctor Herbert West the Necromancer/Cleric and his imp assistant Snidge won't be getting reanimated any time soon thanks to Drasus in the Cloakwood.
Fabriano the Fighter/Cleric (Ironling) made his last delivery on the Coast Way Bridge, accosted by some of Caelar's operatives seeking to purloin the mail.
Ayeol the Sorceress met her end because a berserked Minsc attacked Bassilus's neutral "family" of skeletons, bringing their crossbows in play.
Urgghak Jones the Dragon Disciple ran afoul of Bassilus and his merry band of undead. Take that knowledge and learn, sweet prince.
Rip Stipley the Barbarian/Thief was only acting his quest all along, and fell to Sarevok's blade when it was time for the big leagues.
Cheeseburger the Fighter/Illusionist (Ironman) met Balthazar the trans fat-hating monk, who sent the poor gnome back to the kitchen.
Ottokar the Priest of Tempus was abandoned in Baldur's Gate, left to languish in his own save file.
Barnabus the Barbarian barely had time to enjoy his new belt before dying in an unspecified manner.
Arnaldo the Shaman (Ironling) got his most attractive and beautiful brain eaten by a mind flayer in the Underdark.

Shadows of FAQ

Q: What exactly are the rules for an Ironman run?

A: The rules of Ironman runs are simple. No savescumming or reloading games for any purpose other than resuming where you last left off, or in case of a gamebreaking bug or crash. If you are killed, your run is over. If you are unhappy with a dice roll or outcome of a fight and reload, your run is over. You may re-roll your stats and spend as much time as you'd like creating your character, but the moment you venture forth into the game proper, you are bound by the rules... Note that the whole thing runs on the honor system and is just for fun, so if your character dies and you want to keep playing your save file, feel free to, but please accept that for all intents and purposes, you are not Ironmanning anymore!

Q: Can I post spoilers or discuss strategies in this thread?

A: Absolutely. This is an Ironman thread, and it's assumed that everyone has played the series at least once. There are even people who have done a full Ironman run before! Discussion for approaching hard fights, surviving tough stretches of the game, or just talking about companions is welcomed.

Q: How should I be posting or documenting my run?

A: Many posters normally post screenshots of important events or fights to show progress, as well as write a few lines saying what they were able to do. Some may forego that and just say what they were able to accomplish, and others write up their runs like a short, simple Let's Play or present their run in a comical lens. Do whatever you'd like, but please don't be obnoxious about it. If you want to stream your run and link it here, feel free to let us know when you'll be going at it, and where you end up each session!

Q: Can I use mods or play in a difficulty level other than Core Rules?

A: Play your way, but please indicate what mods or difficulty you'll be using if not going for a vanilla core rules run. For fun, we have "honors" and "dishonors" so check those out if you want to get a particular accolade... or razzing!

Q: Is this a competition? Is there any verification process?

A: Like I said, this is purely for fun and works on the honor system. All we're playing for here is bragging rights and nerd cred, and some sweet, sweet honor badges that you can point to down the line and go, "Hell yeah, I Ironmanned one of the longest trilogies in CRPG history." If you really want to up the ante, like soloing on Insanity with a Shaman or something, that's up to you!

Q: What do I get for finishing my run, or dying?

A: You finished a run? Great! Look at the list of honors and dishonors below and list what "achievements" you were able to obtain in a well-deserved self-congratulatory post. You died? Boo! Say where and how you died (e.g. "Outside Candlekeep, to that goddamn wolf.") and your death will be memorialized in the Graveyard of Gorion's Wards. You can always try again with the same character or make a new one!

Q: Do I have to start in Baldur's Gate 1 and end in Baldur's Gate 2: Throne of Bhaal?

A: No. You can start and end at any point you want. You'll be added to the Throne of Triumph if you succeed through at least one full game, and I'll indicate where you started and ended, as well as what (dis)honors you picked up on!

Q: How do I set up custom portraits?

A: Thanks to biscuits and crazy for this copy-pasted answer. The measurements for player portraits are 38X60 pixels for the smaller portraits (8-bit color runs faster but it can be up to 24 bit color), and 110X170 pixels for the larger portraits. To use a custom portrait, place it in the Portraits directory (in the install directory for the game) and add an S to the end of the small portrait name and an L to the end of the large portrait - otherwise the two names must be identical. The names must be 1-7 letters long, maximum - so the filename with the S or L added to the end is no longer than 8 total characters. The portrait files must be in BMP format.

For example:
XXXXXXXS.bmp for small (38x60, 8-bit)
XXXXXXXL.bmp for large (110x170, 24-bit)

For the Enhanced Editions, the measurements for player portraits are 210x330 pixels. Portraits are automatically resized by the game, so you don't need to make small and large versions of the same portrait. (If downloading a portrait pack with multiple sizes of the same portrait, keep the largest one.) The portrait files must be in BMP format. The Portraits folder must be created in the game directory found in "My Documents." The file name cannot exceed 8 characters.

Q: What is this "Melicamp the Chicken" meter?

A: There's a sidequest in Baldur's Gate 1 with a chicken who is actually a polymorphed mage named Melicamp. The outcome of the quest has a 50-50 chance of turning him back into a human being or just killing him outright. For fun and as part of the tradition of whim and luck in an ironman world, we keep track of how often he lives or dies. Join in and let us know the fate of the man-chicken in your updates!

Other Info and Links

When you've made your character, include the name, class, and a screenshot of the character sheet upon creation (the Print Screen button will take a screenshot and deposit it in your Baldur's Gate folder). Irfanview is also an easy alternative. As the thread winds on we'll have a lot of images, so please use [timg] tags if you're posting large images.

If this thread gets going in full it is possible I will occasionally miss posted updates about characters. When posting an update for your character, please include his/her name and class in bold. For example, "Ashar the Assassin completed BG1". Also, if you post updates like "Krug the Barbarian has cleared the Nashkel Mines", I will update your status accordingly.

The main Baldur's Gate thread is over here... for now!

If you want to check out mods, check out these sites. If you have more sites, let me know!

Modmerge - Required to mod the Steam and GOG versions of BG:EE with the Siege of Dragonspear expansion.

Feel free to post any mods you think should be added here.

Below are the lists of honors and dishonors. Aim for them if you please, but feel free to ignore them if they aren't fun for you.

Ironling: Complete Baldur's Gate 1.

Siege Breaker: Complete the Siege of Dragonspear expansion (requires Ironling).

Iron(wo)man: Complete Baldur's Gate 2 (requires Ironling, does not require Siege Breaker).

Strategist: Complete Baldur's Gate 1 with the Sword Coast Stratagems mod.

Tactician: Complete Baldur's Gate 2 with either the Sword Coast Stratagems or the Tactics mod.

Purist: Do not use any mods that add/modify content (except Tutu, Ascension, SCS, or Tactics), do not create extra characters for your party, and do not modify existing NPCs. Using convenience mods like infinite stacks is okay.

Double Damage: Complete the game on Insane difficulty.

Legacy of Bhaal: Complete the game on Legacy of Bhaal difficulty.

Overcoming Adversity: Complete the game as a Wizard Slayer, Shapeshifter, Beastmaster, or non-Blade Bard (requires Purist).

Librarian: Find every stat tome in Baldur's Gate 1.

Trap Dodger: Complete Durlag's Tower.

Melee Champion: Complete Baldur's Gate 1 without member of your party ever using any missile weapons.

Conan the Bhaalspawn: Complete the game without ever having an arcane or divine spellcaster in the party. Bhaalspawn powers and innate skills are okay.

Honorable Trader: Do not steal any wares from merchants.

Iron Party: Do not resurrect any dead party members (stone to flesh and freedom allowed) OR never have a party member fall in battle. Exception: Getting killed and revived by Shoal the Nereid does not invalidate this honor.

Battlemaster: Kill Sarevok in Baldur's Gate 1 without summoning any creatures or laying any traps.

Dragon Slayer: Kill Firkraag, the Shadow Dragon, the Black Dragon at Suldanessellar, the Silver Dragon in the Undertark, and the Dragon in the underworld.

Helm's Champion: Kill Saladrex and Demogorgon in Watcher's Keep.

Gaxkang's a Wuss: Kill Kangaxx in his demi-lich form.

Legendary Arms: Acquire the Equalizer, Crom Faeyr, The Wave, The Silver Sword, and the Short Bow of Gesen.

Swiss Valor Award: Complete the game with only neutral aligned characters in the party (lawful, true, or chaotic, must have at least 4 characters, requires Purist).

Roleplayer: Do not have a good aligned character and an evil aligned character in the party at the same time (includes the PC's alignment, requires Purist).

Leader of the Underdogs: Complete Baldur's Gate 2 or Throne of Bhaal with a full party of six without using Aerie, Keldorn, Edwin, or Haer'Dalis (requires Purist).

A God Among Men: Complete the game solo. Do not remove or modify the level cap (requires Purist).

OP-ium Addict: Play as any dual- or multi-classed Fighter/Mage, Fighter/Thief, Fighter/Cleric, Cleric/Mage, or Thief/Mage, of any kit combination.

Scroll of Wuss: Use a scroll of Protection from Undead or Magic when fighting a lich, demi-lich or vampire.

Don't Hurt Me!: Play the game on a difficulty lower than Core Rules.

Note 1: Any honors that restrict choice of party members in any way (class, alignment, or anything else) do not apply inside Irenicus' Dungeon in Baldur's Gate 2. You may use anyone you want while inside it, but will have to boot the appropriate people once you reach Waukeen's Promenade.

Note 2: Any honors/dishonors which do not apply to a specific game in the series can apply to any. For example, Double Damage can apply to any game in the series, and you can earn it up to four times if you go all the way from BG1 through BG2:ToB.

Thanks to Gutrot for all the wonderful badges.

Hell yeah lets do it.

I present Kala the human berserker.

Good stats took a fair bit of rerolling but I'm happy.

Full sheet. Playing on core rules.

I skipped all the Candlekeeep chore business and headed straight for the friendly arm inn after picking up some temporary party members. Then kicked them out for Khalid and Jaheria and we did a few small side quests in FAI area and Beregost before heading to to Neshkiel.

Talked to noober a bit for some free xp.

I'll throw my hat into the ring once I get back from the holidays, I've been looking forward to this for months. First though, I'd like some feedback. Should I:

Stream the game on Twitch and post screenshots of highlights in the thread, or

Play in a language I have at best rudimentary knowledge of (Czech) from character creation until either ultimate victory or getting murdered by a bandit firing squad, or

Both?

So I just finished BG1 to BG2 as a fighter/mage, and finished BG1->TOB as a mage and sorcerer before. Any suggestions any classes to try if I'm thinking about this and looking for something new?

Oh and by the by, if you have an Android tablet (or one of those huge phones maybe) it looks like the EE games are on sale. I can't tell how cheap for most of them because I already own them, but Siege of Dragonspear was 99 cents and NWN was 1.99.

There's a nice section with tips about Wild Mage survival on Play It Hardcore.

I gave it a go last year but managed to die after 0 wild surges to a Basilisk meleeing my familiar anyway.

If (when) I fail my current "serious" attempt, which I will post about when I get home, I will probably roll another Wild Mage.

Started as an elven wild mage with 8 charisma. Going to try and see how much inter-party drama I can create before I inevitably explode myself. Rolling with Imoen, Jaheira, Khalid, Xzar and Montaron. I may sub some of them out if they take time to come to blows. Need to take make space for Edwin and his good friends Minsc and Dynaheir. Then there's Eldoth and Shar-Teel, I've never seen how that particular combo plays out.

First steps done, Tarnesh didn't want to sleep but Imoen pegged him with a lucky crit through the mirror images.

There is no wealth like knowledge, no poverty like ignorance.

Updated to here! Looks like we have our three adventurers so far... and our first casualty! I can't wait until someone dies to something absolutely stupid... or stupidly avoidable. My last ironman death much earlier this year was due to one of those ashirukurus in Durlag's Tower backstabbing my confused Berserker three times. I was livid.

Ugh, at least death in the first part of the game is mercifully quick.

Restarting as Bill William, a human dragon disciple with shield memorized right from the start. Perhaps a starting AC of -1 will prevent random death in the early game. Maybe. I've never played Sorceror previously, due to being frustrated at the tiny spell selection, but spamming skull trap and magic missile should work ok for an ironman run.

I think I used up all my luck in the previous game when Xzar was struck by lightning and only lost 2 out of his 4 hp.

In my experience lightning strikes during rainstorms (why do they actually hurt you?) always, always do half your max HP in damage. Okay when you have like, 10 max HP and a single potion or cure light wounds spell will patch you up, not okay when you are a 60+ HP fighter.

Huh, that's neat.

Xzar has succesfully memorized 1 out of 5 spells so far, off to a good start!

The only one that took was infravision, of course

I'LL PUNISH YOU ACCORDING TO YOUR CRIME

Picked up a dwarven comrade in Beregost, he seems to be driven by a love of gold instead of hatred for our pointy-eared adversaries. He likes to wear armour and hit people with both blunt and sharp objects so I suppose he's not all bad. Here we are valiantly searching for the son of Entar Silvershield, who was found (dead) shortly afterwards.

This vile wench lured us into a vicious scheme on the promise of riches.

This is what we think of vicious schemes.

The bard that introduced us to her has a human's stature but the courage of a halfling, since he has offered to chronicle our crusade against the Elves who killed my ward I will tolerate his presence for now.

The aftermath of our party slaying some poisonous spiders. Montaron is grievously injured while Kagain is poisoned. The bard's song proved to be a huge boost to our morale, perhaps he might prove a more useful addition than I previously thought.

(Seriously though, my run almost ended in disaster right then and there, I really need to stop underestimating how brutal Core Rules can be)

Kala has cleared the bandit camp.

We got sick of the reputation requirements of Edwin and him dying too much while grinding up and we decided to ditch him. You can see his corpse on the floor.

Imoen dual classed to mage at level 5 then I spent an hour or 2 getting her to mage level 6 to get her thief skills back. She was a huge help in the bandit camp with a remove fear that trivialized the inside the tent and was able to find the traps.

Onward to cloakwood.

Adjust lasers to FUN!

Maxine has had a fun day.

Fun fact, Khalid got confused, murdered a random person, lost me 15 rep, then came out of confusion and yelled "Gorion would have none of this. "Tis shameful."

So I got Larlochs Minor Drain instead of the heal spell. Bummer.

Melicamp is dead.

I killed Basilieus and did a few other minor quests. I head to the Nashkel Mines next.

Oh god, another year of this thing. Please don't tempt me into completing BG1 another 5 times just to die early in BG2 all 5 times.

Hardcore Helena is a Fighter/Mage who doesn't really care about anything other than not getting killed by all these assholes who seem to want to put sharp pointy things inside of her. No mods, core rules, considered running her as a born hero (had 86 points for stats at birth) but a minimum of re-rolling got her to 89. Survived Shank and Carbos, my sleep spell somehow failed to go off on Tarnesh but like a dummy he went for mirror image and by then he had a guard and a pissed off fighter dual-wielding morning stars in his face. RIP Tarnesh.

Found the Ring of Protection and the Ring of Wizardry, Xzar and Montaron hosed off before I could steal Xzars scrolls but I haven't had a write magic check fail yet so it's all good.

Helena and Imoen are currently resting at the FAI with their new buds Khalid and Jaheira.

Edit:

Imoen had a case of the sticky-fingers while in the FAI, and one of the Flaming Fist showed up. Our heroes successfully ran away, and attempted to rest in the wilderness. After being set upon by a wolf (which took a rather large bite out of Khalid), they decided to return to the FAI, certain that enough time had passed and that the unhappy gentleman from before had forgotten about them.

This was not the case, so back to the wilderness they ran. After two further attempts to sleep and heal were interrupted (two gibberlings, and another damned wolf) they finally got enough shut-eye that Helena could rememorize her sleeping spell. Not wanting to risk the FAI again, they decided to push on to Beregost, and were enticed into helping out a young lady named Silke, who actually was trying to use the party to skip out on gem payments and murder the carriers. The jig up, Helena attempted to put Silke to sleep before beating her to death, but once again the sleep failed to connect and Silke turned invisible. The party did it's best to find her, but when Silke reappeared she was ready with a lightning bolt.

RIP Helena, who wasn't Hardcore enough.

Seriously, what the gently caress Sleep.

Silke is too high level to sleep. It only works up to level 4 creatures she is at least level 5 because she can cast lightning bolt.

Kala Has reached Baldurs Gate

The mines went fairly easily with no real close calls.

Do a bit of shopping and improving ourselves.

Betray Umberlee.

After a bit of grinding I reach max level. Onward towards the end!

Well that explains a lot.

I'm also having issues with Irfanview and BGEE not playing together nicely. I've got irfanview set up to grab the front window, and I'm running the game full screen.

VICTORY FOR KALA

Imoen got gibbed in the assault on the iron throne and we needed a new thief.

This was my most nervous fight of the game. I've had runs that were going great end here before but I was prepared with healing spells to keep the dukes alive. Only 1 died.

I was fairly confident about this fight. I stocked up to hell on potions and had a ace in the hole. A wand of paralyze that usually can land a hit on Sarevok pretty reliably. I paralyzed him with the wand and he went down easily.

Honors: Ironling, purist, honorable trader, battle master,
Dishonors: None.

Round 2

That first attempt left a bitter taste in my mouth. I'm not happy about it. Time to turn to a man who knows all about being bitter and angry:

Kratos is at the FAI.

There was a small incident when looting the upper levels, a noble was in the way of our Looting so Kratos attempted to knock him out with an otherwise harmless punch. The first swing missed but the Noble didn't try to run away so I figured I'd let him swing again. As his body exploded into pieces I remembered that I'd neglected to tell Kratos to put down his other morning star. Oooooooops.

No one noticed, fortunately.

But if Khalid complains again we might get a repeat performance.
