goblin slayer is so clearly and thoroughly influenced by both videogames and surrounding isekai storytelling stuff that it is hard to distinguish it in my mind. yeah, the protag doesn't literally get magicked away to another world, but that is... the only real dividing line. he is otherwise exactly in line with everything else about the genre, it just makes more sense to me to use that term when it is clearly going for that genre and that market.

we call both the clash and green day punk. genre is soft, genre is marketing.

I personally just call them RPG anime, but I can see where you coming from as I said in a previous post in that it's obvious that it's going for that same feel and market.

That's not how the Triangle Attack works...
Using "Isekai" to describe something is about as descriptive as saying that Sherlock Holmes is a Victorian Era story; yes, it's technically accurate but it provides no useful information, the term just describes the setting of the story (that is, it's a story that features a normal person transplanted into another world, possibly with fantastic elements.) Isekai Shokudou and Isekai Izakaya Nobu are two shows that aired recently that are isekai stories, but they're just cooking animes that take place in a fantasy world and have nothing in common storywise with stuff like Shield Hero and similar titles.

'Isekai' literally translated from Japanese means 'another world'. You can say that you don't like gamey fantasy, that's fine, but don't act like people are being pedantic when you are literally using the wrong terms to mean completely different things

An interesting fact is that phrases, especially loanwords, can have non-literal meanings.

I'd agree though that it's a bit confusing that genre labels have to serve multiple duties as a reference to a specific trope (i.e. the main character being transported to another world), a reference to the work's broader cultural context (e.g. the change of setting causing the main character to flourish being related to the author/reader's discontent with modern society), and a reference to the cultural "DNA" that makes up a work (e.g. Goblin Slayer has more influences in common with the typical truckin' and fuckin' isekai than either one does with Narnia). And of course all three are related on some level.

Basically the correctness of saying "isekai" depends on whether the listener gets what you're trying to communicate.

I guess I can take this posting opportunity to vote.

Worst anime that I actually stuck with for 3+ episodes:
Amanchu! Advance: This season made a hard turn from the last one, and left me confused and disappointed. I wish we just got more cool sea diving and relationship development between the MCs and chill SoL comedy and stuff.

Dishonorable Mention to Mitsuboshi Colors for having the backgrounds in many shots just being straight-up photographs with a crappy photoshop filter over them. Also the director made it too slow-paced, so it lost a lot of comedic snappiness from the manga which you can read through at a blistering pace and that seems right for the jokes.

Most Avoided (no particular order):
Goblin Slayer: Synopsis made it sound like Yet Another Shovelware Power Fantasy Anime. Reading some descriptions of the manga confirmed that, and that it's more gross than most. Not interested.
Uzamaid: Synopsis says it's a comedy about a pedophile who harasses a child. :dogout:
Backstreet Girls: Yo wtf is this poo poo. Also it's apparently entirely panning shots across still frames or something? lol great job.

Buzzard, Who Steals From Dead Bodies
The problem with defining this is that "generic fantasy" to a Japanese audience means something a little distinct than "generic fantasy" elsewhere, because of the particular way that hit--e.g. D&D stopped being as popular there after 2e, and that formed somewhat of the basis for Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. Of the two, Dragon Quest tropes loom the largest in the public imagination, so therefore a "lazy generic fantasy setting" is a boilerplate Dragon Quest setting that uses video game mechanics to handwave its setting; tabletop RPGs are just as niche there as anywhere else, if not more so.

People are mistaking lazy generic fantasy tropes in general for isekai-specific tropes, because so many isekai stories are very lazy about their setting, so that's what gets the exposure.

No that's the trope you're looking for and yeah it's the same with Kanzaka and Slayers. They get something of a free pass since they're the guys who practically started the whole loving thing in terms of DnD and RPG fantasy. Hell, I think they may actually predate some of the Dragon Quest games actually.

Edit: Jesus I feel like a loving fossil now thinking how old those shows are.

I thought Isekai specifically involved transplanting a normal modern person into a fantasy realm. Slayers is a fantasy realm where people have modern sensibilities and attitudes in their own weird little dnd world.

Its pretty much hitting New Game+ and being OP as all hell, yeah.

Devil is a Part Timer is like the reverse Isekai (OP Demon lord gets ganked and retreats to our world so he gets a 9-5 service job and doesn't have his Godly Might except when super plot convenient).

my posts are as bad the Current Releases review of Gone Girl

Part of why people keep calling GS isekai instead of categorizing it with gamified fantasy like Slayers or Lodoss War is because the slayer themselves is presented with the same kind of outside context perspective not uncommon among isekai protagonists, where they're unique by being able to think about the world from a different angle than literally everyone else within it. This does not make goblin slayer isekai, but it does lay bare how utterly careless its craft is.

An uncountable number, to be sure.
Time Travel is maybe that "soft isekai" we've been talking about earlier.

Anyway, Narnia is isekai. A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court is isekai. That's just what the word means. Please don't use the word to mean anything you want it to mean for no reason whatsoever.

OK, I'm re-opening this thread and hopefully it'll stay open until January 12th when voting for this and the best of 2018 ends.

Now, let's lay down some quick rules that'll apply from here on out:
  • If you want to post about the worst anime that ended in 2018 that you watched or avoided, do it here. That's fine and we appreciate different points of view.
  • Discussion concerning said choices/posts is valid, to a point. Name-calling/insults about choices is not and is highly likely that it will land you a sixer (or longer). :colbert:
  • Any further deviations about what constitutes isekai or fantasy (the Light/Web Novel thread deals a lot with that, hence the link to it), slice-of-life (slice of life thread), etcetera can be done elsewhere. Same as above, you keep it up, you're headed for the penalty box, compadre.
  • Discussion about currently airing shows can be done in the Seasonal Thread or, if you feel like it, the general discussion/chat thread. If the anime has a thread all to itself? Good, you can go ahead and go to that thread and type until your fingers tire about whichever anime you're watching as well. I think points 2 and 3 have explained well enough what happens if you decide to soldier on with that in this here thread.
  • If you want to talk about Goblin Slayer in depth beyond the reason why you watched and didn't like it or avoided it, we have a thread for shows with "Slayer" in the name, which basically originated because the original Goblin Slayer thread was such a turd-shower it had to get gassed; fortunately some good came out of it and thanks to goon P-Mack bringing it to the attention of everyone, more than one goon (included yours truly) got motivated to (re)watch Slayers, which remains a fun romp.
That good? OK, then.

Always thought that was kind of obvious, not that it changes much like you said. As a final post before a likely gassing , GS is very much not the worst as numerous people have said, but it is the most obiquitous and most ardently and fervently defended from even the slightest criticism. There are videos with a 50/50 split at best if not into the full red purely due to slight criticism on the series and it's all followed with absurd amounts of abuse and flack thrown at the critic. This has also been true in MAL, Reddit, and Crunchy. The same is also starting to happen with Shield Hero.

Bad animes that I watched enough of to actually vote on in no particular order:
Gundam Build Divers - There goes whatever tiny bit of good will was left over after Gundam Build Fighters Try.
Seven Senses of the Re'Union - Not only does it not finish a drat thing, most of what it started was retarded forced angst poo poo to begin with.
Island - I actually can't remember much of this, other than it was mostly stupid and boring and put me to sleep.

Dishonorable mentions:
Between the Sky and Sea - I watched 3 episodes of this, the characters were morons, the mechanics were retarded, and for some reason all the male characters were offensively sexist on purpose.
Darling in the Franxx - Had its good moments, but managed to outweigh them with an off the rails third act.

Most avoided:
Backstreet Girls watched 0 episodes and sounds like I didn't miss anything.
Happy Sugar Life watched 1 episode, shocking twist isn't shocking, but is twisted.
My Sister, My Writer 1 episode, I feel bad for the studio making this because I heard its production was another epic meltdown in addition to the entire premise being complete poo poo.
The Master of Ragnarok & Blesser of Einherjar 1 episode, stupid, creepy, obnoxious.
Goblin Slayer 2 episodes, high production quality yields one thoroughly polished turd.
Beatless 3 episodes, make up your loving mind what you want to be... Apparently settled on generally terrible+recaps.
