it doesn't matter how insignificant it is the comic would still be technically incorrect!

Well if you want to be techically correct, which is the best kind of correct:

Say it's a D-type battery. Wikipedia tells me the capacity of an alkaline D cell is up to 18,000 milliamp-hours. Which for a 1.5V battery is 27 watt-hours, or 97200 watt-seconds.

A watt-second is the same as a joule (Energy=power × time) so that's that's 97.2 kilojoules of energy difference between an unused D cell and a fully discharged one.

That energy difference will manifest as a mass change (yes, even though nothing physically leaves the battery), given by E=mc^2, the trick is that c^2 is such a huge value the corresponding mass change is tiny.

97200 = m × (3×10^8)^2
m = 1.08 × 10^-12 kg
Or 1.08 nanograms. So the discharged battery will be lighter by about the mass of a single human skin cell.

(Perishers and Beau Peep posting return next year).

*Intelligent Life
*Working Daze

(forgive me if it's already been referenced in one of those strips, I checked out of this thread for like, a solid four months there)

Christ is a transliteration of the Greek christos (anointed) referring to the ceremonial anointing of rightful kings of Israel in the Hebrew Bible. It is now seen mostly as his "last name", but originally was just a title for his position as the "king of kings".

I haven't looked it up but I was wondering if the impetus behind the legislation might have been something to do with the war effort. IIRC the US was providing food and supplies to the Allies way before entering the war, which was controversial and was interleaved with the whole antitrust thing, but it's been a long while since I read about it.

Either way, it's quite a thing to see popping up from over a hundred years ago.
