Today's Garf keeps us up-to-date on the adventures of the fat orange cat created by Jim Davis. These days, it's created by a team of ghost-writers and art imitators (hopefully), and has maybe a hundredth of the charm and spark of the old strips.

Zippy is made by a man who thinks newspaper comics are stupid trash. While the majority of strips posted in this thread would seem to bear that out as a correct assumption, it doesn't really excuse how boring Zippy's attempts to exploit the banality of Americana that it mines from yesteryear are.

And Ripley's Believe It Or Not is maybe the saddest of the strips I post. It celebrated its hundredth year of existence a couple of weeks ago, and while it was once a passionate project involving intercontinental travel and original research, these days it's a farted-out jumble of sub-local-news 'stories of interest' and undisguised tracings. Despite the shoddy treatment of his original strip's legacy, Robert Ripley is, in my opinion, a fascinating character in American history, with a real passion for introducing people to strange and quirky pieces of the world which they would have otherwise never suspected existed; you can read a summary of his life here, or go more in-depth with this 400+-page biography.

I checked, and I'm sure someone here can confirm, but while Arizona gets some snow (including just recently over the new year), measurable snow in Phoenix is indeed rare (flurries less so). Therefore, I say Rex's statement that they don't get snow "like we have here" is accurate.

Good call. According to Wikipedia, it's set in a Texas town, though the humor style and hairstyles always struck me as more Midwestern. There was apparently also a musical adaptation, with music by Angelo Badalamenti(!).

It's on GoComics, but despite the strip starting in '82, their "Read it from the beginning!" link directs to the start of 2000. I'll add it to my line-up and keep looking for an archive of the real beginning. Here are the first three, to get the weekdays lined up correctly.

e: Here's one I was able to find from August 7, 1982, about a month after the strip started, but Google's archives of Texan newspapers are spotty.

Yeah, I think that was Mister Beeg, a couple of threads ago. That one started in 2000, and Jerry Bittle, the cartoonist responsible, passed away in 2003.

After doing some searching, I'm gonna jump to the Geech strips that GoComics has dated for November, 2008. Aside from not being just three years ahead of the strip's death (though I can't find enough details to nail the reruns down to an actual year), the scans are also cleaner. The first strip in that run falls on a Wednesday, so instead of dropping another six strips to get lined up, I'll throw it in tomorrow.
