As a sign of next two years, seeing pro-wall 'campaign' ads on CNN 'paid for by Donald Trump for President'. Trump's already getting his 2020 campaign spun up to prime the pump for his evening address, gonna be great watching him us his campaign as a combination slush fund/agitprop mouthpiece for the next two years.

If any of these potential candidates can't survive the in-fighting and stake out a credible case for why they should lead the Party then they're definitely not going to be able to stand up what Trump and the GOP dish out. There should be no free passes, especially since (with a half-exception for prior-rans like Bernie) none of the 2020 candidates have stood up a campaign organization and published their policies and positions for review and debate. There are still fundamental issues like healthcare, climate change, immigration, etc that the Dems need to come to grips with and should be just as important as simply voting Trump out.

orange juche posted:Dealing with 4 years more years of hair furor is not the best time for an ideological purity argument. Trump's admin is actively hostile to any progressive ideas, and he's a bigly moron who will absolutely destroy this country if he is given 4 more years. However the Democratic primaries shake out, Democrats cannot afford to stay home because they got their feefees hurt that their pet candidate did not make it. They need to get out, register to vote, and then actually do so. If they're going to have a real chance at beating Trump then they're going to have to unite and motivate the party to go vote in Nov, and that's going to have to be a combination of both policy and charisma. Can't forget that record numbers of Republicans came out in the mid-terms, and Trump will likely be able to stir up his base to get to the polls in 2020 as well. Whoever ends up getting it is going to have to compromise and horse trade, but that's politics. Right now we've barely got a couple exploratory committees announced, all the current wailing and gnashing of teeth is white noise in the circle of hell that is political twitter/blogs/editorial pages. I'm not going to sweat any of it until the general primary-voting public starts to pay attention which is still months off in the future.

1) Trump 'caters' fast food at the White House and can't even be bothered to stock some Chick-fil-a for the Evangelical/Southern crowd lol 2) How much you wanna bet some random synapse firing made Trump remember the Warriors and Browns standing him up and he decided to go extra cheap 'just in case'. 3) At some point someone had to decide whether to present the food boxed or unboxed and decided to preserve a tiny shred of dignity and leave the limp soggy burgers unseen.

In the event that the partial shutdown remains the status quo, the biggest thing down the road that might force Trump and/or McConnell's hand is tax season - for as much as the GOP likes to bitch about taxes, a lot of their voters are going to be pissed when they don't get their tax rebate checks in the mail. The only reason why Trump and McConnell are getting away with keeping the government closed so far is because the so-called 'important' bits - defense and entitlements - were fully funded earlier in the year. Even if we manage to get everything back open this year, I don't know why the Dems would allow piecemeal funding bills next year since Trump will just pick the ones he likes and hold the rest hostage for more poo poo.

Exactly why that kid 'apologized' through a PR firm, politics and media have become interchangeable and it's getting to the point that having a neighbor complain about your obnoxious yard signs is all it takes to get on Fox and Friends and a Presidential tweet.

DoktorLoken posted:I think it's reasonable to think that Russian bots/troll farms pushed this. Saw a Moony Times article that claimed there was a Brazilian pretending to be an American tweeting some of the original video material but It worries me a bit how the bot/troll farms are sinking into the zeitgeist since half the time they're just picking up on regular news stories and spamming them out, either to help establish their 'legitimacy' or because they fit with whatever narrative they're attached to. A story ends up getting discounted as 'fake news' after a bunch of twitter bots help propel it into the wider public discourse, even if the story itself is still in and of itself completely factual. And unlike with liberal/conservative media divide, accusations of secretly being troll farm propaganda is something that's can be used to cut within party lines like with some of the BLM/BDS stuff among the Liberals and the Left. It feels like it's harder and harder to even come to an agreement on factual events, much less what opinions people might have about them.

It's probably because we're at full employment and companies realize they can't (fully) gently caress over (some) employees when they can walk to another job without (too much) trouble. I sure didn't see any offers to carry over folks during the 2013 shutdown, it was all use your PTO or go in the hole because they knew they could screw folks without consequence.
