Basically channels about anything not broadly popular like movies or video games. fushimiurushikobo features narration-free videos of a Japanese carpenter painstakingly crafting beautiful pieces of table and cookware like spoons, bowls and bento boxes. There's something incredibly satisfying about watching a master craftsman do their job. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5tIyK5mF6Q Audiology associates is just a Welsh ENT guy scooping earwax out of people's lugholes. He explains what all his tools are called and why and when he uses them. Another weirdly relaxing watch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8397JBZu8AM Defunctland is about former and failed fairgrounds and theme parks. The videos are well researched and he even interviews people who designed and worked in the parks. Bright Sun Films covers similar ground but with a wider remit, including holiday resorts and malls. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZQGtnEL2xs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mr1CWRc174o&t=668s Walkscapes is literally a dude with a GoPro strapped to his chest walking around neighbourhoods in Korea. Only of interest to me because I used to live in some of the places he films, but I think it has the same "Slow Television" quality as the carpentry channel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vAe-0RLpSik&t=1971s PrisonerCellBlockH95 is every episode of the (loving dope) 80s Australian soap opera Prisoner Cell Block H. I did say niche. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wm7CspGznnE

the United States Chemical Safety Board is a us government group that studies industrial disasters and publishes reports, including 3D animated videos, on what went wrong and how to prevent it from happening again https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtWyBMwRt-A This Is Dan Bell is a channel from a guy named dan bell who makes a number of different series, he's your typical fat internet nerd who loves a e s t h e t i c s and other memey poo poo but unlike a lot of urbex / dead mall archaeology video makers he has a good eye for wonky old interior design and, crucially, can shut the gently caress up and just walk around filming poo poo for upwards of 5-10 minutes at a time so that's nice https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYCJRRSfDP8 also probably everyone knows about Primitive Technology Guy at this point but he's an australian into neolithic technology and his hobby is just to film himself cavemanning out in the jungle. tons of imitators for this guy and his millions of views, make sure you get the real authentic australian caveman experience. relaxing and interesting videos where the guy never says a word, which is a beautiful stylistic choice https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7nqBgklf9E

Are you interested in death and the funeral industry, especially non-traditional funerals? Ask a Mortician is the channel for you! Are you interested in blacksmithing, carpentry, concrete work, tools and equipment, crusty old knifemakers, and philosophical musings on the value of hard work? Essential Craftsman is the channel for you. Especially of note, he's building a house solely to document the process in detail for his channel. Twenty episodes so far on just permitting, site prep, and retaining wall concrete work, with the real meat of foundations and construction due to kick off this spring. Ever wanted to run huge amounts of electricity through random things just to see what happens? Do you have little care about the dangers of burning your house down and/or causing neighborhood brownouts? Do you like Cockney accents? PhotonicInduction is the channel for you!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TW7uyD0hfqg Your Dinosaurs Are Wrong is a cool series of videos wherein a hypernerd named Steven reviews children's dinosaur toys and goes into what's right and wrong with them. I don't think he's an actual paleontologist, but he certainly does know his stuff. He goes into details about particular features of the toys, comparing them to the actual dinosaur it's meant to represent, and will talk about why certain things evolved the way they did. Unfortunately, it doesn't get new videos often. oh dope has a new favorite as of 20:40 on Jan 5, 2019 |

AntsCanada is a channel about a guy's massive collection of ant farms (he's got like a dozen different ones) and other related pets: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrnDOovsmfg bill wurtz is probably best known for his (hilarious) "history of japan" and the followup "history of the entire world video, I guess" videos but his channel is mostly about him posting short and strange (but often catchy) songs he comes up with accompanied by equally-strange animation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCxJ4gAt2cs For the past year the channel Chubbyemu has been posting videos about horrifying medical conditions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QiBpKuTrFrw Clickspring is a channel about metalworking and building clockwork mechanisms. So, prelude. This all starts with this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvUU8joBb1Q Which, to be fair, is pretty much the exact opposite type of video that this thread calls for with almost 100 million views. However, there is a story. The making of this marble machine was in fact documented on the channel, over a series of 9 videos. I haven't seen these videos, as they aren't part of what I'm actually obsessed with, and they are only a footnote in the story I'm trying to convey. The real inciting incident... I'll let the nice Scandinavian man who built the machine explain. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0Guq7vZb_E&t=255s (It should start at 4:15) For those who require TL:DR: the machine, in a sense, was a failure. Don't get me wrong, as a piece of folk art and music making capabilities, you only need to see the views on the original video to understand how successful it was. But in terms of being an instrument, it was incredibly unreliable. The building was improvisatory, and mistakes built upon mistakes until you got a wobbly mess that wore itself down. After a year dedicated to it's building, it worked well enough for the video, but it's inventor was unhappy. The dream was to make a variety of songs with this beautiful machine, and tour it around so that many people could hear it. Instead, he got one video out of it. And from what I heard soon after, it broke down significantly after performing it's one song. He ended off the video dreaming of fixing this mess so it can perform as it should. And 10 months later, he returned with this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8qyVURtSZc This is the building the Marble Machine X. An ongoing project of about 2 years now, catalogued over 62 videos, a collective 14+ hours of broadcasted footage. Documenting absolutely every single aspect to designing, conceptualizing, prototyping, crafting, revising, rebuilding, scrapping, re-rebuilding, cataloging, bookkeeping, procrastinating, meeting with the software developers, finally assembling, unassembling, and drafting up once again every single piece of this machine. And the machine's inventor, Martin, is really good at documenting and narrating every step in understandable and interesting ways. It makes the entire engineering process seem a hell of a lot less daunting, and a lot more understandable. Adding to this hobby project-turned-engineering marvel, he's working with a lot larger knowledge base. He's gotten a lot of help from a community of specialized and trained engineers, craftsmen, and other people who have worked on projects like this. Their collective knowledge, talents, and skills have helped create a completely solid, finely crafted machine that you believe will travel the world. And I will say, there is a lot of drama to the whole process. In commitment to documenting the entire construction, you get to see a lot of his failures and mistakes too. Some mechanics that seem genius end up biting him in the rear end later. Some parts that look surefire locks and finalized will suddenly be scrapped for completely new mechanisms. Sometimes things that should fit in the CAD draft end up not working at all. And then, when it all comes together and start working as they should, it's so lovingly shot that it's almost pornographic. It's like that old tumblr blog of things fitting perfectly into things, but instead it's gears turning gears turning axles turning belts and it all just feels so right. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHXm1kqQOw4 I almost would recommend skipping the first couple, as they're fairly dry or different from what the series eventually becomes. The evolution of the presentation over time is extraordinary, and they only get more watchable over time (except for a couple mid-to-late episodes that's purely about dealing with drafting/software, which might not be to some people's taste). It actually has me considering a path towards engineering with how approachable it makes it look.
