Jerusalem posted:On paper it works for sure. The execution is what I found (drastically) lacking. I can totally buy the Absorbaloff as a literal representation of the lovely and nasty parts of fandom ruining everybody else's fun, but understanding that and being able to enjoy it were two different things for me. The absorbaloff was literally made by a 12 year old and I refuse to believe any deep thought went into Love and Monsters whatsoever. I’d rather watch Six strangle Peri and then have a mediocre episode than ever watch it again. That’s how strong my feelings are.

It was a mixed bag--River and Leela was good (and a rare team-up, which is nice), Ace and Benny was nice enough, Paternoster Gang was terrible, UNIT was OK. If their goal in putting in a Paternoster audio here was to sell people on the upcoming series then that is a hell of a miscalculation cause it's super bad On a scale from Scourge of the Shadow to Nekromantia how bad is it

SecretOfSteel posted:I really loved his transition in Utopia when he went from bumbling, cranking, sadly out-of-time but very well meaning scientist to full-on master, had that nice level of unsettling to it. It actually makes me think of Graham in the last episode of the previous season at the beginning where they find out Tim is on the planet. He has that subtle shift too in his manner that felt unsettling. Would have been great if they'd left it like that, but being Season 11 they had to pause the story and have an explicit conversation about how Graham was feeling and what he was planning to do next. The script got in the way of the acting too much in Season 11. Not to worry. As one door closes, another opens.

corn in the bible posted:I love Kinda. Davison is a good Doctor and he has good companions, I don't get why people are so down on him He wasn't flashy, and when the show has problems juggling a large cast, it's pretty glaringly obvious. We've seen the same thing happen last series where some characters got lost in the shuffle in some episodes. He's got some fantastic moments and lines ("Well, that's democracy for you") but since he's sandwiched between the overwhelming personalities that are the Bakers he kind of gets shuffled into the background.

Barry Foster posted:Capaldi's last season was good though. Obviously imo. Doctors always take a series/series-and-a-half to wear in, even when they're naturals at it like Smith. They have to find the groove so they can get a consistent personality going. I think Whitaker's been great out of the box, personally. Just hasn't really had that "THIS is Thirteen, right here, in a nutshell" episode yet.
