Other than Amazon apparently being kind of poo poo with sub boxes and a little iffy translation, its a good start. They condensed a lot of info and have a good balance between body horror, animation style that has kind of a seamless transition between 3D ish monsters and effects with computer animated 2D and character depictions that so far are spot on for a Dororo that's shortening 48 demons to 12. It even sort of follows the pacing of the original 60s anime, but more conscise and with villages that actually look habitable. The late 60s anime had people just basically living in rubble next to desiccated corpses while here there is at least a village. And since this series is abandoned just like Daigo did to Hyakkimaru, they may just rip off the ending from the video games, but much more justifiably when Tezuka just dropped it.

Well so far its only one episode, so we've yet to see if this also the same village that Lady Bandi lives at. The setting wants to claim Japan was a poo poo place to live in even before Daigo made the pact so let's see which narrative this show carries, That humans are horrible monsters and the demons at least keep their word while eating them/causing misery - or Hyakkimaru is supposed to be some chosen Japanese messiah and there is redemption. The 1960s one was still very close to WW2 so it might have been more fertile ground for rubble cities. Then again, Daigo rides to Hell Shrine across bodies on the roads and there is carnage that Jukai goes out of his way to put prosthetic on. We may see a lot of open warfare the coming Mondays. Up to the show to deliver on that.

I wonder if the other 36 demons will show up as demons or "ghouls" as the translation put it. Some were more story important than others, but if its 24, it wouldn't hurt to use them as fighting fodder.

There was a landslide after the statue was struck with lightning so there is the possibility that the 11 demons are literally tied to the land and keeping it healthy.

Second episode is out and its starting to delve both into how poo poo the time period was, as well as what makes Hyakkimaru work. Sensing the colors of a soul is a pretty way to side straddle around psychic samurai.

Maybe, we got a few more episodes to go and episode 3 might have some good ol fashion war is hell. But if we don't have some real class strife with a certain Headman/Magistrate, then maybe we do have some problems.

As much as Hyakimaru could immaculately sense an immediate threat of a demon, he didn't personally do poo poo to the humans that enabled the monster that went around eating travelers to line their pockets. It isn't exactly something that Hyaki can turn on a dime right now and that probably can gently caress him down the line when he probably doesn't understand how the world of men works.

Seemingly in this incarnation Hyaki has spent his life without voice, hearing, touch, taste, sight or possibly any real human interaction outside of anyone that would care enough to deal with him or be in trouble like that kid falling down the hill. The blind man at least knows how to interact with people, speak to people, hear things, etc; but maybe he was waiting for the opportunity to present itself. Hyakimaru just wonders until something red/blood colored enough comes at him or he's hungry and just eats meat and berries raw. He's straight up a wild man that Dororo probably has to tame a bit the more he regains back, from learning how to deal with pain to actual social cues. 68 Hyaki would have probably murdered the villagers that tried to restrain him. But this one, without seeing some deliberate threat color just let them toss him around. That might change when he can feel pain and get frustrated at these colors hurting him when they shouldn't, or can now hear and perceive people in ways besides looking directly at their soul. Silver2195 posted:Hyaki is shown to be literate, so he's more capable of human interaction than you might expect. Unfortunately, most of the people he has to deal with probably aren't literate. Outside of that he can't do much right now to connect to people who don't give him a chance like Dororo, Jukai or Lute Priest. Especially if they're near Goblins/Demons or get freaked out by his appearance.

Was Feudal Japan known for its active and thriving economy? Gotta find those people to murder.

So its dumb in a series about demons that steal a baby's body parts to basically have one swap pieces with Hyakkimaru? Also I think this Daigo would kill and make war whether or not his demons were getting murdered, its just another reason for him to do so. His grunts still just butchered a bunch of kids and a woman that slept around to survive because they suspected someone to be a spy. We're not only going to get samurai actively targeting Hyakkimaru now, but have a places and people go to poo poo because the false paradise Daigo's deal created is almost halfway undone by now. Daigo and his system are still going to gently caress people over. Its not original, never will be. But Dororo 2019 is looking to have some teeth to what its gonna do.

I don't really mind them toning down Dororo being a little poo poo obsessed with stealing swords and more obsessed about Hyakki possibly because Dororo's latched onto the weird doll man being family after talking about how Doro's mom and dad tragically died. Also I'm not sure how someone that's read the manga and seen past incarnations of this show expected any sort of surprise from a 50 year old franchise remake?

Its also kind of funny how this Hyakki has his own version of "Those who live outside of Society are either a beast or god." And its so easy for that beast in a cave to be a monster, especially when Samurai are shitheads.

Wonder if Tahōmaru loses his eye to Hyakki before or after they know they're related. They're setting him up as someone that's never known defeat that Hyakki is gonna give it to him bad, but I'm curious how their relationship starts off. Do they fight before he's invited and possibly bribed by his father to stop? Is what triggers their hatred is Taho losing one of his buddies to Hyakki? Does he see mother just melt for Hyakkimaru that drives little bro into a blind rage?
