The Road to Indy
IndyCar features the Road to Indy ladder system, which provides a defined path for up-and-coming open-wheel racers to reach the top. Several IndyCar teams run teams in the lower series as well. Many of these series race on the same weekend as IndyCar as support races.

- IndyCar Minor Leagues, many of the current IndyCar drivers are Indy Lights graduates. Current Indy Lights Champion Pato O'Ward was awarded a 3 race scholarship in IndyCar this season, including the Indy 500. O'Ward and championship runner-up Colton Herta are driving for the new Steinbrenner-Harding Racing team. Now in its 5th season, the Dallara IL-15 Chassis has received rave reviews and should better prepare drivers for the big leagues.

- Former Pro Mazda rebranded this year. Last year saw the first year of the new PM-18 chassis which is seeing a resurgence of the middle tier of the ladder.

- Bottom rung of the ladder, usually first step after pro-karting. The Italian company Tattus was selected to build the new chassis for USF2000 to debut this season.

USAC Silver Crown / Midgets - While not officially part of the Road to Indy Ladder, many current and former open wheel drivers got their start in sprint cars. One even got to kill someone on-track during a sprint race, cool huh?

The All American Soap Box Derby - They're open-wheel and have an IndyCar sticker, they count.

So as it stands now, the only races without title sponsors are:

Mega update on windscreen/halo/AFP
wait waht's an AFP?

quote:

INDIANAPOLIS (Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2019) - INDYCAR announced today the planned introduction of the next step to improve cockpit safety for all drivers in the NTT IndyCar Series.

All cars participating in an April 24 open test on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval will be fitted with Advanced Frontal Protection (AFP), a titanium piece made by Dallara.

AFP, which stands a little more than 3 inches tall and averages three-quarters of an inch in width, is designed to deflect debris away from the driver. It will be positioned in front of the cockpit, along the chassis centerline. The piece has passed the same strength tests as Dallara's roll hoop.

Versions of AFP have been explored through on-track and simulator testing since 2012. New technology made this a practical option now.

NTT IndyCar Series teams received information about the planned AFP adaptation today. All cars entered in the 103rd Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge in May will be fitted with the piece, and they will carry it through the rest of the season.

"Safety is a never-ending pursuit, and this is INDYCAR's latest step in the evolution," INDYCAR President Jay Frye said. "There are more details to come about the phases to follow."

A halo-type device was considered, but it cannot be fitted to the current version of INDYCAR's chassis.

INDYCAR has done extensive testing with a windscreen developed in conjunction with PPG Aerospace, including on-track sessions at ISM Raceway and Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 2018. Neither driver who tested the windscreen reported problems, but recent testing at PPG's facility in Huntsville, Alabama, proved that work remains before INDYCAR could implement its use.

It’s understandable that they can only do so much with the DW12, but if they haven’t integrated these ideas into the successor in a few years when the chassis change, they will have failed and dropped the ball.

The thing is, though: I really don’t think that’ll happen. I have more faith in IndyCar for the next five years than NASCAR. Imagine telling that to the thread circa 2011.

I'm willing to bet there will a new chassis in 2021 which will be designed to support a windscreen, especially with the next generation engines coming in the same year.

LED panels will be back all season long starting next weekend!

https://www.realopenwheel.com/new-led-display-panels-set-for-all-ntt-indycar-series-cars-in-2019

quote:

The previous-generation matrix LED (light-emitting diode) system was discontinued midway through the 2018 season due to performance inconsistency on the cars. INDYCAR, the sanctioning body for the NTT IndyCar Series, contracted with a new manufacturer, MoTeC, to modify a system used in IMSA and apply it to NTT IndyCar Series cars for 2019.

Among the items that the LEDs can display during any NTT IndyCar Series session are:

  • A car's running position on the leaderboard, updated each time it crosses a timing loop and signified by a red number;
  • When the driver has engaged the push-to-pass overtake assist button, signified by a flashing green "PP";
  • A clock timing a car's pit stop, shown in red numbers counting up by tenths of a second until a pit stop reaches double-digit seconds, then in each increasing second;
  • The ability to show whether a disabled car's engine is running, allowing the AMR INDYCAR Safety Team to more quickly respond to, restart and release the car back into competition. If the car's engine is running, the left-side LED will display a green "snake" moving from bottom to top and the right-side display will show what gear the engine is in (including a "0" if in neutral). If the engine is not running, the left-side LED will display horizontal red bars climbing from bottom to top and the right-side LED will display the gear the engine is in.
