Honestly if I was able to go full on loving Blader Runner 2049 cyberpunk capitalism hellscape aesthetic with neon poo poo everywhere that would have been pretty rad though. I might have liked that a lot more and completely have changed my opinion of it.

Actually you can with Tycoons. Tycoon citizens just don't give a poo poo about the smog and their farms lose maybe half of the productivity that the Eco ones could. Their higher level buildings were concrete and neon skyscrapers. You'd still want some good or at least okay islands for the Techs, but the Tycoons just shrugged it off. Of course in the end Tycoon citizens still paid more taxes in positive ecobalance (just not as much as Eco ones). Their farms didn't get the absolutely hilarious Eco bonus to productivity though.

Shame the second Tycoon energy production was Nuclear, and since Blue Byte are German developers you cannot have fission based reactors be good...

Anyways I look forward to hearing all of you talk about the Beta. I think I'll be sitting it out to not spoil my enjoyment when the game coming out.

Also how is 2070 from a die-hard 1404 player?

Like, 95% the same mechanics wise, only you have two versions of the "occidental" citizens, the "oriental" citizens give you a good chunk of the really cool stuff (but don't actually earn you money unless you have the expansion), and you have to deal with "ecobalance" and power mechanics. And you have maybe 1/3 of the pretty doodads to make things pretty. Oh and a giant pile of QoL improvements for the UI.

If you're a "Die Hard" 1404 player I would recommend playing the Ecos. A lot of 1404 players trying out 2070 complain how washed out the 2070 color palette is. The palette is actually a visual representation of the ecobalance/"health" of an island. An industrial wasteland's gonna be grey with dying trees, but if you increase the ecobalance past neutral you start getting the Disney-esque saturated greens and golds.

I just love that the move tool is a thing. Makes it so much easier to just shove my lumber yards and tree plantations into the awkward corners of the map when I've expanded past the original harbor area when I'm just setting up an island. Sure it interrupts lumber production for a bit but I can always just go work on another island while the trees regrow.

I was hoping the beta would be able to go in my steam folder and then just be the game. Ah well. I think I'm gonna buy my wife this game too to play multiplayer. Is there some display that shows how many hog farms are required to efficiently run the sausage plant, for example? Or do I just need to figure ratios of resources and production by trial and error? Also, is there a way to get numbers for length of road to show up?

Mouse over the spinny wheel, or mouse over the icon for the building in a build menu, it will say how fast it produces something. So a potato farm and a schnapps distillery both take a minute to produce a product, meaning they're 1:1 ratio.

Meanwhile an iron mine produces ore at a 15 second interval, an iron smelter produces ingots at a 30 second interval. So one mine can provide for two smelters. And steel plants work at 45 second intervals. So one mine can provide for 3 steel plants. Or two with some leftover (likely for weapons).

I know this is me literally complaining that this Anno is too Anno, but doesn't it seem like there is way more to micromanage and juggle this time around? My attention is constantly being split between what my fleets doing, an expedition, quests, and the perpetual treadmill of building a city on at least 2 old world islands. When the game started asking me to build in the New World it overwhelmed me - it's like, now play a second game just as deep and demanding as the first game but we won't pause the first game and you have to manage them both while competing with AI that will take all the islands and out-build you if you aren't on point.

Some kind of commuter dock so my workforce can freely wander islands would go a long way in making the micromanagement more tolerable. I think this game might be too much for me if some more concessions to usability aren't made.

Yeah this is the Anno I'd say benefits the most from the ability to run a faction in multiplayer mode. Especially when you get to the new world. I'm definitely gonna have to turn off at least one pirate when doing a sandbox game after launch.

Yeah, the way the game handles broadside fire isn't the best, but it's 100x better than 1404's "advance, stop all movement to bring guns to bear, catch back up" stupidity. And each individual shot on the screen being an individual shot in game is cool and a massive game changer. The Anno devs had a combat video where they showed it off how the Ship of the Line is equivalent to the biggest, meanest steam ship if you use it right. The steam ships have slow firing, but powerful cannons on turrets, and then he had a Ship of the Line drive between the the battleships (or whatever they were called) and suddenly it was able to bring all 54 cannons to bear.

And yeah, the best thing is the fact that the cities are so animated. The decorations just add to that, and when you get a festival going, gently caress yeah its party time!

yeah honestly that's always been my big irritation with everything besides 2070. The second set of citizens you grow exist only to extract resources. Only two tiers of Oriental dudes on 1404's desert island. Only two tiers of workers in the arctic, moon and tundra zones in 2205. 2070 had it so good with the whole entirely other tier of "primary" citizens to work up and then with the expack even the Techs got fleshed out.

I think I've got just about every tile I could realistically use taken care of here. And this is after I moved the banana plantations off to another island.

Edit: Oh something I don't think anyone's mentioned is how in your powered industrial zones you start seeing little trucks instead of horse drawn wagons zipping about. They move faster and unload faster, very nice.

Another reason it's hard to figure out how many buildings you can use before you overwhelm a warehouse is that if a building is affected by electricity (double production or requires it) the building will stop sending out horse drawn carts and start sending out little early trucks when juiced up. The trucks not only move faster but load/unload faster.

Also the second upgrade to warehouses (from 3 to 4 cargo bays) quietly increases the warehouse capacity of the entire island. Which is part of the reason I'm kind of irritated the New World warehouses upgrade only once. Not only is space a premium on New World islands (if previous gripes didn't explain that) but it would be so nice to upgrade their island capacity. Oh well, the harbor storage space exists for a reason.
