I love Leyendecker. But those ads, done by a gay man, were used to sell shirts to (primarily) straight men. Back in the period when hardly anybody was out, it was easy for straight people to miss the non-straight gaze. That let queer people slip a LOT of stuff under the radar; it doesn't mean that their employers thought they were making ads for the [insert slur]s.
