Hi folks! We here at Paradox Interactive are extremely excited to bring you our latest grand strategy title, Dawn of Chaos IV, covering covering the tumultuous events from 2001 all the way to the end of the Second Water War. We're targeting a 1.0 release sometime in late 198 A.C., but we already have an early alpha build playable for pre-order purchasers of Gold-Tier or higher. We've got an ambitious feature list with lots of changes from DoC III, including the much-requested overhauls of the nuclear warfare and space combat mechanics, as well as a much more dynamic system for modeling the degradation of the Earth's ecological resources that occurred during this period in history.

With the huge scope and depth players expect from our titles, it's inevitable that there are going to be some major bugs and balance issues at this stage in development. We've decided to forums-based bug reporting to this thread, as single-issue threads tend to clog up the forums and make things difficult to navigate. I'll start things off by listing some of the more significant bugs we've documented in the current build.

  • There is currently a bug in the 'Deploy Special Forces' diplomatic option that makes it impossible to withdraw forces once deployed. We're working on having a hotfix out soon.
  • The mechanic for leaving the European Union has attracted a lot of feedback, particularly regarding the playtime required and the difficulty of getting a workable legislative coalition formed to finish up the negotiation chain, we're working on rebalancing. There have also been reports of the 'Leaving EU' status timing out without a transition event firing, causing all province improvements and developments in the effected country to be deleted due to an issue with the tag system. We believe the issue is rare but players should avoid enacting the 'Invoke Article 50' decision until a fix has been implemented.
  • Many players are reporting a bug in which leaders of major world countries all spawn with minimal or even negative attribute scores; UK and USA appear to be particularly heavily affected and we suspect it may be tied to the 'Anglo' culture group.
  • Parts of the 'Alien Invasion' event chain sometimes fire significantly earlier than would be historically reasonable given the range of contemporary Andromedan hyperdrive technology.
  • The US's space military arm is sometimes created with the generic 'USA Space Force' name, not the historical one.
  • There is currently a known bug that causes nativist sentiment to rise in areas that have the lowest immigrant population ratio (obviously this should be reversed)
  • Greenland and Antarctica sometimes remain non-colonization even after Climate Change has progressed past the necessary stage.
  • The 'Avenatti Loses Primary' event is known to fire well before the beginning of the 2020 Democratic primary, which obviously should not be possible.
  • Certain weather conditions appear to prevent some models of early-game stealth aircraft from flying; we believe this may be a holdover from code reused from Hearts of Iron XIV, the previous game that used the Cortez Engine.

We're still working on the Central African Empire's focus tree, but all of Africa will be implemented in the next major patch. We understand that African Paradox fans are passionate about this and we can promise that there will not be a repeat of the 'Rise of Botswana' DLC fiasco.

So, I'm trying out the new "Age of Posadas" expansion, but there seems to be a bit of an oddity with switching between the world map and the new high/low Earth orbit map. I've been trying to squeeze out propaganda through UHF/VHF signals and I can't exactly see the area of propagation according to how I'm beaming them from my home cruiser.

Do I need to update my graphics drivers? It looks sort of glitchy blocky, but I don't think it's intentional.

Ha, if you just like playing with broken things there's still fund to be had with this game. I made another game using Turkey because someone said there's a typo in a config file and all the diplomacy score penalties are being assigned to Turkmenistan or something instead. So I'm just doing the most heinous poo poo and nobody cares. Like I'm locking up all the journalists and my political opponents, and I still roll some sort of special event where I expose Saudi Arabia killing one in my embassy - everyone thinks I'm a champion of the free press! Except the US president but that's the QA quality I've come to expect from this game by now. I'm sure at some point it'll get fixed but if you want to blow up some Kurds consequence-free, now's your moment...

I have to respectfully disagree with the haters. That dlc was buggy but was also loads of fun. I made a mod that swapped the leader with the MC of Number 1 Ladies' Detective Agency and had a blast.

Have you tried bribing the United States? I know it sounds dumb, but I played another game as Russia in 2016-2020 and kept bribing and loving with the United States and they never attacked once. Might be a bug but it works.

There is a known bug where the 'Chavez Dies of Cancer' bug triggers early, sometimes even before Castro dies. This makes Venezuela an even more difficult country to play, particularly if you haven't completed the 'Bolivarian Successor' event chain.

On a related note, we're still working on some issues with the Leader health mechanics. For example, early game Leaders tend to remain active at much older ages than expected; I've seen a few games where Berlusconi somehow remains a major political figure into his 80s. Note that this is as intended for the USA tag; the 'declining empire' status increases the probability of major leaders being of advanced age.

What's up with Paradox reusing the Nazis from Hearts of Iron? It doesn't make any sense that they'd be around in the US in 2017 and it just seems like lazy filler stuff. Hopefully this is just a placeholder that gets replaced in the final version.

Also why do China and Canada suddenly develop mutual enmity at the 18 year mark of every game? Is this a developer in-joke?

As a devout centrist I tried to verbally convince my ideological opponents to come to a reasonable compromise and they just called the police and/or their personal mercenary company instead. Precisely what oil company will give me the techpoints to come to the table with a sense of legitimacy?

1 - Believe it or not, Nazism actually persisted historically after the Second World War and was the dominant authoritarian-extreme right ideology in much of the West until the rise of Wholism and Seagalism-Duginism in the early 2020s. Of course we will be making some changes to the default 'Nazi' ideology to represent the differences from WWII-era Nazism, for example even the most devout adherents generally did not sieg-heil in public, as Ideologues like Laura Southern sometimes do in-game.

2 - There's a typo in the scripting, this was supposed to represent the effects of the 2028 Tainted Syrup Crisis on China-Canada diplomacy.

Little bit puzzled again. I used the character builder to make this chap

I gave him all the important traits:
  • Billionaire CEO (the game rolled "cafe chain" as the field of business)
  • Radical Centrist
  • Independent
  • Low taxes on rich to promote growth

Clearly this guy is perfectly positioned to occupy the entire middle ground and catapult into the presidency. But I click Announce Candidacy, hold my first town hall and my approval rating collapses like a irradiated iguana! My social media ratio stat is actually below zero, which shouldn't even be possible, where am I going wrong?

So I've been playing a NA campaign on Realistic to avoid any major divergences. It was pretty hard work early on - the game still randomises wind direction after the bomb, and it went east this game which is about as damaging as it gets. I've just got past the Six Californias Fire while acquiring the critical population centres for New New Mexico (see map below). I'm just about to begin the Siege of Los Angeles but all my forces keep getting hit with Fake Flu, and even with the coastline I have I can't desalinate enough water to treat it effectively. Anyone got any tips? I've thought about releasing Ocasio from prison early for the morale boost, but besides being ahistorical I can't see how I'll survive the heat without that to fall back on later.

Yeah, everything about Brexit is broken right now, guess everyone was too busy focusing on the US president sequences to test it properly. I tried playing the scenario from the other side as Germany (which effectively lets you manage the EU) and carefully negotiated a deal with the UK that Ireland and France could accept. The AI isn't actually programmed to cope with that so it went crazy and rejected the deal when the PM offered it, no confidence voted the PM, backed the PM in the confidence vote, had the PM unilaterally rewrite the deal by randomly deleting portions, and then approving that deal before asking if I was OK with all that. I honestly don't know what to say...

Sorry to bump this again but I really want to know if a patch is coming any time soon. I've been easter-egg hunting, and someone in the Paradox forums said there's an unlockable video of Ralph Northam final TV appearance (for those not up on early C21 history, he went on a TV special with Oprah, when he was challenged to moonwalk. After declaring that he could now "without blacking up, because he[Jackson] died white!", Northam began to dance, and audience members responded by hurled chairs at him, fatally injuring him. Apparently Paradox dug up the complete raw footage, not just what was broadcast).

So I've just about completed all the prerequisites, but at the penultimate step I'm being blocked by presidential candidates. I swear, after the 2016 election every Pop in the country thinks that they personally could be president, and they've all started announcing their runs. I literally cannot close the notification boxes quickly enough, every time I acknowledge one and dismiss the policy shift prompt, another one has already declared! A bit of a cooldown on the autohelp might be good, but really there just needs to be a cap on how many can be running at a time, before the whole thing runs out of memory and the save gets corrupted...

realchat: this is obviously the most fun I've had in a thread in ages, and I spent too much time making that fake-paradox map to not bump this once...

if you go into the options and look for the "Allow Field Clearing" checkbox that should fix it. characters with enough gold can run plots to exclude other characters from political decisions, whether it be elaborate murders or simple bribes. but that's weird because if your game started before 2016 it should've been forced on automatically by the Abuela decision chain

OK here's a quick explanation of how scandals are scripted which should shed some light on why so many people are having issues with them. Right now the game pre-calculates impending scandals on a rotating schedule, a few tags (countries, provinces, municipalities, etc.) every tick. Separately, there is an Opposition Research mechanic for electoral democracies, where characters can spend Campaign Funds (or Political Capital, if the character is in an oversight body) to try to uncover scandals on a rival character.

Right now how the Opposition Research mechanic works is a character picks the 'Dig Up Dirt' menu option, a timer starts, and when it finishes the action either succeeds or fails. The probability of success depends on the 'attacking' character's Dirty Tricks stat, the 'defending' character's Integrity and Influence stats, whether the 'defending' character has any relevant scandals that remain undisclosed, and a few other things. There's a quirk of this system that may be causing the problem: when a character picks 'Dig Up Dirt', the game RNG selects a relevant scandal ahead of time and 'reserves' it for that action. Normally if an Opposition Research action fails, it returns the reserved scandal to the defending character's pool. But recent builds added a last-minute check before an Opposition Research success to ensure that the scandal is compatible with the attacking character's ideology; obviously, it wouldn't make much sense for a Neolibertarian candidate to attack a rival for taking bribes, for example. There was an oversight when this check was implemented that failed to return the scandal to the pool, so in this case scandals get 'frozen' by the Opposition Research action. When the scandal re-calculation for the tag in question finally happens, the script realizes that such scandals are way overdue and triggers them, often in quick succession. In rare cases I've seen entire US state governments get wiped out by racism scandals that their Neo-Confederate rivals dug up in Opposition Research and couldn't use, until the recalc 'dumped' them all out at once. Obviously this is not working as intended and we have applied a fix to the latest internal build. Also coming up is a 'Sockpuppet' feature that will allow characters to use non-compatible scandals as Opposition Research.
