Currently on a big adventure with my friends Sora. Donald. And Goofy.

I've actually gotten to the point of cautious optimism on Anthem. I doubt I'll be playing it a month after release but games like that are a once a year or less occurrence these days.

Dang, I had no idea a new one was coming out. I liked 5 but I hope this one isn't quite so basic. 3 is still the best.

I dunno about Rocket League but I think the Twisted Metal style car combat genre pretty much died when they figured out decent FPS/3PS controls for consoles.

It is crazy that EA surprise released a f2p scifi shooter like 2 weeks before their big scifi shooter. I know Super Apex Legends and Anthem aren't exactly clones, but still.

Possibly, though it would probably have loot boxes and pay-for-power MTX if it was. As it is, Anthem is not free to play, but (for now) has no loot boxes and only plans to sell skins, emotes, and stuff like that. They also plan on all the content/story updates being free instead of being paid DLC, so... yeah, good luck with that.

I really want the game to succeed because I think the core game is a lot of fun, but it has absolutely everything else working against it, including its own release schedule.

My guess is that Apex Legends has been ready to go for awhile but they were holding it back to not crowd the demo/release period for Anthem. Then they took the auspices re: Anthem and thought why bother. I wanted Anthem to be good but it isn't and I wouldn't be surprised if it never gets there. You know things are bad when the community starts pinning its hopes on a "dev build" or day 1 patch.

Eh, I mean, there are definitely visible improvements in the launch build that weren't in the demo fork (like a social hub, a squad UI, etc., things we've actually seen in preview videos), but there are also a lot of things that we're just being reassured will be better with no real evidence.

That said, even if every single bug from the demo is fixed (which it won't be), there are bound to be bugs in areas of the game we didn't see in the demo, new performance issues, and the issues with the game's godawful UX are big enough that it'd take a year of concentrated patching to fix.

I think the core game is fun enough to give it a shot even with those issues, but I'm also not paying full price for it at launch so :v:

Really I'm more concerned about bad UX, issues with the mission and map design, and things like that than I am with bugs and performance issues. Bugs can be fixed a lot more easily than core design and UI issues.

I'm just speaking from experience. Other games I've played where the community starts talking up a day 1 patch after an underwhelming public beta include FFXIV (the original version), Hellgate: London, Elemental: War of Magic, Wildstar, and other games with similar fates. It never works out. I think Anthem could be good after several more months of development but it feels like EA has already written it off.

I dunno, I can't really be optimistic with anything about that game's writing.

I mean on paper, Fates doesn't sound like its story concept is terrible either but we all know how they managed to botch that.

I'm bummed that it takes place in anime combat high school, the most common and also worst anime stock setting.

I thought it was pretty straightforward. The game's central conceit is that you're in the Fire Emblem equivalent of a high school, and there is fighting. This is an extremely common anime trope. Game is gonna be the Valkyria Chronicles 2 of the series.

One thing that stands out to me is just how improved the release version is over the demo. They really weren't bullshitting when they said they improved performance and massively improved the mouse/keyboard controls. It's just a shame that like the whole basic structure of the game does everything it can to stand in the way of fun.

I think the Destiny 1 comparison is appropriate. The issues are different and maybe more immediately apparent but it's probably around the same level of "good god why is this game like this" whenever you're not actively in combat.

IIRC the Division had some serious problems at launch too. My favorite anecdote was that there was some NPC you had to talk to during the tutorial, but he could only converse with one player at once. So people lined up by the dozen in game to talk to this guy just to get past the tutorial.

Of course the difference between Anthem and Destiny/The Division is that it's EA so a bad launch means it's probably just doomed. (although for all I know it's selling really well)

Anthem's kind of an odd situation for EA, I guess, which is why I'm not quite ready to assume BioWare's about to be sent to a farm upstate. It's not a single-player game, nor is it a live service game that's already planned to have another sequel in a couple years, or anything like that. It was always going to be a long-term investment for them.

I mean, this is EA we're talking about, so they might not really draw a distinction there, but if there was ever a time I could see them giving a game time to be fixed up before deciding whether or not to pull the plug, it'd be their big live service pseudo-MMO title.

I hope Bioware still has a Dragon Age: Andromeda in them at least. I know people on this forums will say literally any video game is double cancer hitler but I liked Inquisition and I think it was pretty popular. My main gripe with that game was the "everyone is covered in vaseline" art style.

Yeah I think Warframe would be that game, but I really don't like Warframe and don't understand the hype around it. I don't like the design of the characters or the world. It's just an appealing looking/cool universe in my opinion, but that is entirely subjective and personal preference.

My problem with Warframe is that half the mission types are just flying through the level as quickly as possible and ignoring everything, which is boring and monotonous and strains my pinky. Of course I haven't played since before they added that big "open world" area.

Also once I got a beefed up Hek and Saryn Prime I could stroll through just about any of the content with zero difficulty. I know I could intentionally handicap myself to add some challenge back to the game, but that just doesn't appeal in a game where getting strong is like 90% of the fun.

PantsBandit posted:

It is. Terraia has a great curve, from 1 hour in to 100 hours in you feel like you're getting stronger, learning to manage an inhospitable world, but there's always another zone out there that can make you feel frail again.

Starbound had some of the same charm but suffered from too much procedural generation.

I think the two biggest things that killed Starbound for me are:

1)The curve feels flat. In Terarria you can go from having a bow that shoots an arrow to a bow that shoots 5 arrows that home in on enemies and call down shooting stars wherever they hit. In Starbound you go from having a gun that deals 10 damage to an enemy with 100 hp to a gun that deals 50 damage against an enemy with 500 hp.

2) The gameplay just feels clumsy and bad. Playing Starbound vs. Terarria feels like playing some long forgotten SNES mascot platformer by a no name developer vs. playing Super Mario World.

I honestly can’t remember a company utterly destroying it’s public image in such a short period of time. Like any future article about them is going to mention when they teamed up with the website blacklisted from google for hosting child porn, Nazis, and ISIS recruiters

I think there's probably like a 90% chance that guy is an 8chan regular so that poo poo was normalized enough for him to the point where he couldn't even anticipate people objecting to it. Kinda sucks to have another publisher to cross off my list forever, I was gonna pick up Darksiders 3 when it came down a bit. Guess we shouldn't be surprised from a company named Nordic though.
