February is Black History Month, so post those faves! A favorite artist of mine is Ben Passmore, a cartoonist and anarchist, whose stuff you can read here: http://daygloayhole.tumblr.com/comicsbyben and here: https://thenib.com/ben-passmore. Here are a couple of his comics about black history: https://thenib.com/martin-luther-king-jr-assasination-50-years?id=ben-passmore&t=author https://thenib.com/black-lives-matter-the-aclu-and-respectability-politics?id=ben-passmore&t=author

I've always been a bigger fan of Malcolm than Martin. I disagree with his stance on integration though, but he's not wrong "We believe you are a fool to try and mix with someone who doesn't love you." https://youtu.be/wcRSOHmYq-k

The Super Bowl yesterday was absolutely godawful. It was the lowest scoring game of all time, with the two teams scoring a combined 16 points in a showing that was very impressive (I'm sure) to people who know a lot about the finer points of defense, but very boring for people like me who want to watch a man put a ball in the zone of score. The halftime show was godawful, with Big Boi providing the only point of light in an otherwise devastatingly mediocre performance. However, what I found to be most galling was the NFL's insane decision to portray themselves as paragons of social justice, spreading the message of tolerance across our great nation. As if they didn't just blacklist an incredible football player for daring to suggest that something more could be done to fight bigotry in this country than paying lip service to the idea that racism is bad. That's why I'd like to express my appreciation for Colin Kaepernick. He could have just worked quietly, made his millions, and retired in luxury. Instead, he used his position to draw attention to the problem of police brutality against minorities in America. Much like the man who the NFL made a big show of expressing their fondness for yesterday, he peacefully expressed his discontent with the current state of affairs as the bile of lesser men rose around him. The NFL, those beacons of anti-racist sentiment, demanded that he stop. He didn't, and they blacklisted him. We should all aspire to be more like him. We should all be willing to stand for what's right even when the assholes who have somehow come to run everything tell us to sit down and shut up. Oh, and we should stop watching the NFL. It sucks.

I'm watching season 3 of True Detective and Mahershala Ali is one hell of an actor. I remember being impressed with his Oscar-winning performance in Moonlight. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z6yMItXePG8 Everybody involved with Moonlight deserves props. Barry Jenkins, Naomie Harris, Ashton Sanders, Alex R. Hibbert, Ashton Sanders, Janelle Monáe... I'm so glad this movie beat out La La Land for Best Picture.

I have been listening to a lot of funk and disco and I have to say one of the most innovative artists of the time was Kashif. His synth sound was unlike any other. He was raised in foster care and was self-taught later becoming a major R&B and disco producer and lecturer at UCLA https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kashif_%28musician%29?wprov=sfla1 I hear his tunes today and I'm like how was he able to make those sounds. https://youtu.be/mdnmCBGj7qo Maybe not everyone's cup of tea but I admire his sound and style

There’s a documentary on Netflix called Hip Hop Evolution that is a blast to watch. DJ Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa, Grandmaster Flash and tons of others were/are so incredibly talented and innovative. I also want to show some appreciation to B.B. King not just for his sheer talent but I had no idea that nearly every time he got in a tour bus, it crashed and flipped. Never stopped him, thankfully.

Norman Smiley He used to be one of my favourite wrestlers when he was in WCW when I was young. Especially when he was given the comedy gimmick of the wimp who would accidentally win Hardcore matches and became a reluctant champion. Apparently he was also a big name in Mexico, and listening to other wrestlers, when he wanted to/was required he could be a phenomenal technician in the ring. He is now one of the head trainers for the WWE.

W.E.B. DuBois, y'all. A brilliant writer, a committed sociologist, and an unabashed socialist. Co-Founder of the NAACP and author of The Souls of Black Folk, an essential work for anyone even remotely interested in the African-American experience. My favorite Civil Rights figure by a pretty wide margin.

Ted Hawkins. He was a Venice Beach busker who tried several times to move into a recording career, but always fell short. He tried Europe and Australia, but kept winding up back in California. In and out of prison, and on and off heroin for decades, he finally recorded a full album in the mid-90s for Geffen Records, and died shortly after its release. Ten years ago, you couldn't find a trace of this guy anywhere. Then, people suddenly started taking notice. Now there is a documentary which incorporates footage from a previous, unreleased documentary. He performed his own songs, but also tons of covers. He covered everyone from Sam Cooke to Webb Pierce. He has one of the most distinctive voices I've ever heard, and most of his performances are just him and a guitar. There Stands the Glass Green-eyed Girl (one of his own songs) Avoid most of the album versions on Youtube, because record producers just can't loving help themselves, and always cram in a bunch of stupid bullshit reverb and whatnot. The Next Hundred Years album is pretty good.

Sun Ra was a jazz musician who claimed to have come from Saturn. Along with his Arkestra, he released many albums with titles such as "We Travel The Space Ways" and "Strange Celestial Road". Most of what he recorded had a smooth, relaxing, yet intriguing sound which resonated with those engrossed in the counter-culture of the 1960s and 1970s. I myself am not a huge fan of jazz, and would probably have only given Sun Ra a cursory listen, if I had not first heard his spoken-word album "Strange Worlds In My Mind (Space Poetry Volume One)": I Seek A New World https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlCdaSCO4WE The Damned Air https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-DYyHUZOGU If They Only Knew https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9oDDMgBYrQ0 If you're going to listen to only one of the suggestions I've linked, I recommend the last one.
