Cybernetic Vermin posted:the main issue with 5g is that 4g is so freaking good, very hard to see the use. i use 4g for my home internet these days, solid 40 mbps, ~10ms latency, all rock-solid. the handful of meters of wifi at times involved is more trouble than the 4g. my limited understanding is that 5g only has speed benefits when heavily using mimo on mm frequencies and that for the most part the 4g network could never be replaced by 5g. the kind of infrastructure density required for 5g means that it could only ever be deployed in cities where 4g has problems with cells being full so while 4g is definitely good enough for now 5g will alleviate the biggest problem with it which is full spectrum in dense areas i also have my doubts about the actual in building performance of carriers in the 24-40ghz range but given the range is only on the order of a city block for a given transceiver the sheer numbers of them is supposed to make that a nonissue either way lte isnt going anywhere
