Not only is it still going, they're still making Conan movies every single year. What's even better is when Avengers Endgame dropped, it was #1 in theaters for that weekend globally, except in Japan, where the #1 slot went to the newest Detective Conan film. It's like the Dragon Quest of legacy anime.

People complain about comicbook movies, but sometimes I imagine what it's like for Japanese parents watching half a dozen annualized anime/tokusatsu movies every year.

'cause it never looked bad before

Even as a kid I thought the battle graphics look kinda butt compared to other JRPGs tbh

Even if a rival was more combative, they'd probably still heal you for the sake of a fair fight or something, since that's a game design decision before writing.

Even the $60 thing is like.. The last Switch game I played was Atelier Ryza which looks like a good PS3 game at best and like a bad PS2 game at worst. I still enjoyed the hell out of it. This is true for most JRPGs I play which often have budgets of $5 and some shoestring.

tbh I'm perfectly fine with Pokemon trucking along as a relatively budget iterative RPG series that just happens to make a lot of money, but even within that niche it does feel kinda deficient. even falcom/gust fans complain about some of the animation in those games, but a good point I've seen is that even as way smaller devs they at least try to paper over worst of it with fades or evasive camera direction versus Sw/Sh showing you model rotation in its full glory. I'm not steaming about it, but after getting over the HD hump and reckoning with their infinite roster bloat, there's really no reason GF should be making games that look worse than Ryza going foward, even under similar conditions (ignoring that they also have way less pressure to be making annual games to begin with).

Kinda weird how blandly positive IGN and Gamespot are in comparison unless they're just coasting on a "well it's Big IP so people will probably like it and it was fast and painless for me to rush through before deadline" attitude.

Didn't it come out some streamer had actively hosed with his leaked stuff to remove animations and all just to make it look bad?

I think general switch hackery might be causing additionally bugs/performance issues, but I don't think they're actively removing assets from the game or anything.

I dunno if it's better than the reveal but these remakes look fine but holy poo poo that trailers was bad. Who thought a dozen dramatic zooms on text boxes was an appealing direction choice?

Pokemon versions were kind of a rip back when they only had one save per cart, which really encouraged families with multiple Pokemon-playing kids to buy multiple copies, but otherwise the third versions were way more of a scam than the alternate ones.

Loads of kids collectable/TCG RPGs did the same thing. It's fallen off mostly on account of the series themselves dwindling, but some of the Yokai Watch titles did it, and the Mega Man games went all the way up to three simultaneous versions.

That makes sense. I imagine if the XP share served more as a catchup mechanism and less like a constantly shifting goalpost for your team's level, and the game actually had a difficulty curve based around it, it'd be seen less unfavorably.

Like a lot of things this is something that got solved by other RPG devs decades ago (just scale XP gain) but has to get argued over by pokemon fans due to it being the slowest jrpg series to change of them all.

iirc they either don't have dialogue or have a narrator describe conversations, but the first few movies have shorts attached that are just pokemon messing around

ultimately the takeaway for me from the "why do people keep buying Pokemon games" discourse is that no one has managed to make better monster collecting games than the company that makes interactive slideshows - every Pokemon-killer is just way worse despite Pokemon's faults, or just doesn't get why people like this genre. That's why Pokemon remains "playable" despite embarrassing performance

Pokemon is a corporate multimedia brand before a videogame series. If it ever gets totally supplanted it's going to be by a combination of that finally running out of steam and a company with better longterm planning than Level-5 making something that catches on with the same demographics at scale, not an indie dev making something that beats the games on design merits.
