The friend's business of course being SNC-Lavalin which is a multi-billion dollar multinational corporation that is in trouble for bribing its way through Libya during the Gadaffi years and cheating local Libyans. The standard punishment being frozen out of federal contracts for 10 years which is an enormous financial loss but Trudeau just wanted the AG to give them a slap on the wrist.

It's useful to point out that most parties would have done it anyway in an election year because it's so easy to spin it as "current government is responsible for thousands of job losses as SNC-Lavalin moves business out of Canada due to punitive measures" but of course Trudeau being the idiot picks the third, stupidest route of "try to get them off easy and then waive privilege on the AG thinking she won't speak out"

It's almost as stupid as BC blocking the pipeline from being built through untouched forests and mountains and BC locals just constantly being a pain in the rear end causing Kinder Morgan to pull out of the project entirely so Trudeau doubles down on his promise to bring oil money in by... spending $4.5 billion to buy the pipeline. Gotta bail oil out even when the people don't want it!

Trudeau hosed up pretty bad with the SNC-Lavalin mess. The company is a massive employer in Quebec and a loss of government contracts for 10 years will cost tens of thousands of jobs, and opens the company up to foreign exploitation and control, so there's a bit of a natsec issue there too. The Liberal government instituted a mechanism for companies that have been convicted of paying bribes that allows them to make an apology and pay a fine but doesn't come with the freeze-out of government contracts.

Giving SNC-Lavalin a free pass is absolutely the correct decision from an economic and security standpoint.

Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut you can't just go about pressuring your attorney general about these sorts of because even if it's the right policy decision it is still impugning on the rule of law which is a big no-no.

It's pretty bad news in an election year. The Tories are favoured to begin with as Trudeau has lost a lot of confidence among NDP voters who voted for the Liberals in 2015 - where the Liberal Party ran fairly significantly to the left of the NDP. Despite a significant amount of left-wing federal policy successes of which marijuana legalization is probably the most notable it's definitely not going to save him. It's a shame, I rather liked having an explicitly feminist Prime Minister and explicitly feminist foreign policy but Trudeau keeps running into scandals like they're garden rakes.

Jagmeet Singh, the leader of the NDP gets a bad rap for being unpopular and unelectable and polling has born that out pretty well so far, so I wouldn't be surprised to see another Conservative majority government in six months. Good guy with good ideas though, I'd be quite happy if he were to take the Prime Minister's Office. It's not gonna happen though, they're just not popular enough. I'll probably still vote for them though.

It doesn't mean they shouldn't pay the price for bribing dictators but it'll massively gently caress over Canadian infrastructure development, cost thousands upon thousands of blue collar workers their jobs and foreign-driven corporate flight is a big problem in Quebec. From a policy standpoint SNC-Lavalin was specifically designated in 2015 as a company who the government specifically did not want exposed to foreign control. I wouldn't want them to go under either.

None of that means Trudeau pressuring his attorney general to let them off for the Gaddafi bribes with a slap on the wrist is okay. It doesn't mean that the Gaddafi bribes were okay either and that they shouldn't face punishment for the millions of dollars they spent in Libya. It does mean that I get why they don't want the company to be barred from Government contracts.

You're literally arguing that once a company is big enough they get to engage in morally reprehensible behaviour like bribing their way into building prisons for the Gaddafi regime and because money is the most important thing they should get away with it.
