Aliens 3 was decent since it had Tywin in Space and was able to maintain the visual consistency of the previous movies.

I guess it was sort the failure at going in a new direction while the previous movies did this much better.

The first AvP game that came out was loving amazing to my teenage self. My friend and I were playing it for the first time. Well it was me and him standing over my shoulder. You start out in an APC. Once you take a step outside.... beep.............. beep.............. beep........ uh oh, I'm getting scared. Beep....... beep........ beep..... poo poo. Beep.... beep.... beep..... ok what do I do now where are they? beep beep beep beep beep.....

I remember playing the marine demo back in the day again and again. Was pretty replayable since the game uses random enemy placement which made the encounter somewhat unpredictable.

Remember the facehugger insta-kill animation?

They're super tiny, fast, and can jump anywhere. If there was one in the room you just start emptying mags left and right while holding the back button down. Fire was the best way to deal with them. Just fill the whole god drat room with fire.

Avp (2010) was also somewhat decent.

Colonial Marines on PC was greatly improved by the mod scene which fixed the graphic issues and many of the AI problems.

Well it's more a survival horror type game similar to Soma especially since you have limited weapons and the gadgets only serve to drive off/distract the Alien.

Wrong director perhaps?

Jeunet is a great director. Delicatessen, City of Lost Children, Amelie are all awesome movies. You could argue that it’s a bit of a mismatch but like with Fincher on Alien 3, I think that the movie would be terrible without him in charge. Also he wanted to give the newborn horrifying inflamed hermaphroditic genitals, which sounds like a great idea by me (studio shot this down, alas). Unfortunately it’s kind of terrible even with him in charge. Whedon’s script is more at fault for me. It’s too Whedony. Some premises lend themselves naturally to twee meta comedy, Alien isn’t one. Alien and even more so Aliens are funny movies, but in a much less artificial way.

One of favorite things about Alien, even from when I was a little kid that didn't know much about the world, was that the crew on the ship were just average schlubbs. Basically truckers in outer space, and I could never shake the feeling of how loving screwed over by their company these dudes on the lowest rung of the totem pole get. Like, they don't know what's on the planet, they don't know that the ship's computer has been programmed to not give a poo poo about them. They don't know that their on board physician, the man they rely on for their very health and well being, is also a computer that does not give a gently caress about them, and actually quite the opposite really. As crazy as the chestburster scene is, Yaphet Kotto yelling "ASH IS A GODDAMNED ROBOT!" is almost more unnerving, espc considering it follows hotly on the footsteps of Ash shoving that magazine down Ripley's throat, which stuck with me for a very long time.

Probably also why I enjoy Ripley's line in Aliens to Burke "You don't see them loving each other over for a goddamn percentage" so much.

loving hell Ash creeps me out. Loved the guy in the office chair in isolation with the rolled up magazine in his throat you can randomly find, which confirmed for me beyond a doubt that the robots were for sure evil.

At the fundamental level Alien is actually about blue collar workers being hosed over by distant upper management.

Just played a round of SS13 Colonial Marines that felt like the authentic Aliens experience. For the uninitiated (and note that this game is strictly for broke-brains like me), CM on a good day is a 150 marines and support staff answering a terrestrial distress call from a colony that has been, unbeknownst to them, overrun by about 40 xenomorphs with strong respawn potential (via abducting and facehugging marines, colonists, and lab monkeys). All marines and xenos are played by actual humans in low level roleplay.

Anyway. I got picked as a squad smartgunner for the squad assigned to scout the creepy caves covered in gross biomaterial. We get in, find a weird egg, squad leader pokes it and gets facehugged. Then xenos start pouring out of every direction, pouncing, grabbing, and dragging away helpless victims to an overwhelming din of gunfire that slowly fades as more and more guys get picked off. I'm one of the last to get grabbed, and chose to go out by priming a grenade and dropping it at my feet.

If that all sounds cool to you, remember this is all in 90s flash game level graphics. But still. Was cooler than any other Aliens video game experience I've had outside of Isolation and AVP 2.

lmao the game has exciting computer janitor jobs.

First time I saw Aliens special edition with the sentry gun scene, I instantly felt a lot of the tension disappear. They had just killed a shitload of aliens, and right or not, I thought, "things are going to be easier for them now that they have only a few aliens left to deal with". It's a cool scene, but if you're watching for the first time I can see it being a bit of a tension deflater. Maybe Cameron picked up on that with test audiences? Or maybe I'm an outlier with my opinion.

I assume the maximum warrior count would be 100 or so for the colony assume every colonist got grabbed for face rape?

Probably a little less than 150, given that the colonists killed at least a couple.

I wonder if a movie nerd did the math on how many aliens got killed in combat.

I imagine they were at least 100 or so warriors left giving the alien team a pretty good K/D ratio.

The best Alien/Aliens movie knockoff was Galaxy of Terror.

Also ironically enough it was also a training camp for James Cameron for getting experience in film production and practical effects.
