So let's see CSPAM tear this show apart or, god forbid, take earnest enjoyment in something. For my part I think he's doing ~great and necessary work~ with his show.  What is this? John Oliver's news show is described by CSPAM as entry-level leftism. In between the jokes, John's research people deliver a deep investigative dive into one specific issue per week. It's rare for a TV show about issues to be popular. Most are about current events in the mind-melting 24/7 news cycle instead. Hell, it's rare today for anyone to even attempt real journalism. He throws in a lot of juvenile dick jokes and self-deprecating cringe humor in between everything because it's impossible to keep most people awake for a deep issue dive otherwise. And it somehow just.... works. He keeps your attention long enough to learn about something you otherwise would have never looked up. Maybe history will remember John Oliver like he's the millennial generation's Upton Sinclair for bringing exposure to so many various scummy, seedy industries and practices that nobody even began to give a poo poo about prior to the episode on it airing --- but some of which are now on the public's radar in a very big way. One segment sparked half a million new comments to be sent to the FCC about net neutrality to compete with all the bot comments. One segment brought the public's attention to debt buyers, and he demonstrated how easy it is to do by buying up some old medical debt that was once worth $15 million and immediately forgiving it. One segment brought attention to how easy it is to get religious tax exemption -- again, doing it himself, and forwarding all the donations to Doctors without Borders. One segment this year on the Psychic industry revealed it to be a surprisingly multi-billion dollar economic parasite. Who knew? John Oliver may have helped bait Trump into running for President by making fun of him with a sarcastic donation offer. He got not only himself but all of HBO banned in China for talking about Xi. He got sued by rear end in a top hat coal miner Bob Murray and many others. I also don't know if it's been announced that John Oliver will be the next actor in a series of many to play Bran Stark in Season 8 of the HBO's Game of Thrones. Wow congrats John Oliver! Each of those episodes I posted are waaaaaaaaay to the left of any other show on television about the same issues simply by mentioning the issue There's also some honest to god investigative journalism happening in there and new facts revealed because of it that would have never seen the light of day if his team hadn't sent someone to try something People say nobody wants to pay for news anymore and so the industry thrives on clickbait and can't afford keeping their investigative journalism departments open. But here is an example of millennials doing the opposite of being the ones who kill something. They are keeping investigative journalism alive and it's producing the leftest of all takes for some issues as well uncovering some obscure facts that would have stayed hidden.
