John Oliver has an imperfect record but he is putting left wing ideas on the air on new unheard of topics every week moreso than any other TV personality.

And keep in mind that he's beholden to a big company and doesn't have total freedom over his show, yet still brings as many important but unknown left wing causes to light

He's putting many of YOUR causes on the air when no one else is

If this is how you all bitch and moan any time one of our useful allies happens to become popular and successful, holding them to a standard of perfection and visible poverty or else they get the leftist circular firing squad, then I can kind of kind of understand why we are lacking for real leaders and public figures

Maybe don't do that

Oliver is to the left of a lot of centrist libs probably due to where he came from but he's still a lib and still advocates from a point of "the system needs to be fixed not replaced" and he's very much in that nyc succdem bubble along with sam bee and all those other variety pundits out there

some of the episodes are ok but lol if you think he's ever going to advocate for changing the system in any meaningful way. he works for at&t now

Samantha bee also had one of the most painfully unfunny promos ever made a few years back

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etf-gIh1qC4

I was in a crowded movie theater waiting for Star Wars: The Force Awakens to start and it was just dead silence followed by some people asking confused "was that supposed to be funny", I legit felt embarrassed for the people that worked on it lmao

Mudslide Experiment
I go to fear/sanity rallies
And i put down the old d.n.c.
I love Jordan and Sam B and Trevor
I hope every ex-daily show becomes a star
But don't talk about bernie sanders
That's going a little bit too far
So love me, love me, love me, I'm John Oliver

The people of the ol' green party
Should all hang their heads in shame
I can't understand how their minds work
What's the matter don't they watch SNL?
But if you ask me to vote third party
I hope the cops take down your name
So love me, love me, love me, I'm John Oliver

I vote for the democtratic party
They want wall st. to be strong
I go to all the Hamilton showings
He sure gets me singing those songs
I'll waste all the money you ask for
As long as it's just for a joke
So love me, love me, love me, John Oliver

Once i was young and impulsive
Heard every conceivable pun
Even showed some socialist leanings
Talked about eating the rich
But I've grown famous and wealthy
And that's why I'm just talking poo poo
So love me, love me, love me, I'm John Oliver

Are there any American pundits who have shows in the UK about how dumb their politics are? I have a business idea...

An insane mind

I like LWT OP, I've just not been watching anything this week because I'm trying to stay away from the news a bit. He could be more left, but then he'd have to go off syndication or stop being produced by big studios and I don't know if I'd be able to give that up for cash to use on my investigative dives either .

Still think he's good though so I guess that makes me terrible.

John Oliver has never once even approached any indictment of the American system, capitalism, or the liberal discourse and is therefore a technician-reformer collaborator at best. Everything about his show perpetuates the notion that merely pointing out problems is sufficient to resolve them because idiot liberals believe the system is capable of eradicating its own core characteristics when they become excessively problematic for domestic populations. It never actually makes any assertions, it just informs a worthless centrist sense of smugness that comes from having all of the available information and choosing not to act on it in a meaningful way

i liked lwt at the start, because they focused on international stories, their thing about tobacco sales in developing countries was crazy neat, nobody else in that pundit/variety circle did stuff like that

post-escalator lwt has been nothing but that really weird/sad liberal thing where they're all desperately laughing through their own psychosis and like everything from jokes to content is centered around being therapeutic for everyone traumatized by Orange Man Being President so obviously its liberalishness is on display and it turns out john oliver is a succ moron but hey

i still liked their international segments a whole lot, covering stories that are just like totally ignored by our domestic media

but being interesting and funny is a pre-donnie luxury i guess
my feelings exactly. i stopped watching mid-2015 and it only went downhill from there

lmao

quote:

In 2014, John Oliver emerged as one of the few comedians who maintained his edge while influencing, or at least distracting, real-world policymaking.

His net neutrality episode, in particular, revealed that even in today’s satire glut, a comedian can inspire an audience to take civic action. Net neutrality, which the FCC is on the verge of retiring in favor of a dual-tier model that reserves speedier net access for those who can pay for the privilege, is not a new issue. And unfortunately, it’s a boring, complicated subject—Kryptonite to the usual comedy delivery systems.

But in June, Oliver devoted thirteen solid minutes of his show—about half of it—to net neutrality, advancing a hilariously compelling argument in its favor and turning his jokes into a cogent explanation of what is at stake. Before he could ridicule the FCC’s policy, he had to unpack its missteps in detail.

Informing the audience, skewering illogic, and building it all into a truly devastating finale the way Oliver did: that’s more than just throwaway jokes on Twitter. After the initial HBO broadcast of the segment, it went on to net 7.7 million views on YouTube.

The Monica Lewenski interview and the rest of yesterday's segment on internet dogpiling is up. It's good, watch it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yq7Eh6JTKIg

I hope it inspires more people to reach out to individuals they see getting hounded their whole lives by the disproportionate response of internet anger campaigns.

If it causes just one person to send a message of support whenever they see it happen then the episode was worth it.

What other TV segments have you seen recently that don't just create a narrative, but are designed to have some sort of clearly visible, positive external effect?
