Next Question: Is it possible to make it so that it doesn't replace any of the Main Characters with other Main Characters? For example, I got a Seed that replaced Edgar with Sabin, and Sabin with Edgar. I don't want ANY of the 14 Main Characters from the game as any character.

I already have a copy of spritereplacements.txt that I edited to remove the other sprites I don't want (like Potato), but I didn't see entires for the Main Characters, and I can't find a Flag or Secret Code to do that.

I'm not, but I've been passing the time by changing the entries on the list of male and female names. Adding named characters from the other titles with names of 6 characters or less, and of course, adding Quina to both the Male and Female lists. I've also deleted most of the animι names, as that's not my cup of tea.

should do it i think

or maybe crash a lot
one of those two things

I THINK, off the top of my head, that this change would work as desired with partyparty, and work as desired sometimes but mostly crash on seed generation if partyparty is not active, because the gender determination code has some issues if not enough vanilla sprites are present. this was the case when I messed with this code back in v63, but i have not tested recently and gender stuff is disabled with partyparty

maybe a better edit would be one that affects partyparty only:
if wild: num_to_replace = 22

Sup nerds. Last time we dusted a clown and today we're off to find Luigi. Let's fuckin' roll.

I take the good crew. When I said that Ragnarok can easily break the game, I meant it. I hope you like items!

First we're looting the storehouse for some things we actually earned for once.

I also snag another Hyper Wrist and an Amulet. These are alright items. You might think the Ogre Nix is good with that sky high attack; it's not because of Fragile Wpn.

quote:

Will always try to use [12..19] MP to inflict a critical hit. When no MP can be used, no critical hit will be inflicted. Has a average of 28% chance of breaking (depends on the last digit's of the wielder's current HP).

So sure, you'll hit pretty hard but there's about a 1 in 3 chance you'll lose the weapon completely. This make it only useful for Throwing, as the damage is based off of the item's Bat. Pwr.

There's one last chest here.

They get some measure of revenge when the front one reflects Pearl onto poor Pipimi, one shotting them.

This little guy shows up when someone's been asleep or confused or whatever for too long, and it heals them. I kill it shortly after anyway.

This is the only shop in town worth a drat and only because of that Chain Saw.

I don't buy one as I don't have a Tools user.

This is where it begins. I spend a good long while Ragnaroking everything I can find. We'll fly through a lot of it since menuing isn't very exciting.

Vanilla but not unappreciated. Elemental defenses are amazing.

Marvel Shoes are 4 different relics smashed together. They give you Haste, Regen, Shell and Safe status all at once. You really can't go wrong with them.

I'm not a big fan of the Atma Weapon in general and this one is just strictly worse. Fairy Ring teaches Slow and extra magic is good. Blizzard is early but not TOO early; it also has +20 attack compared to vanilla.

More MP good. Tao Robe is normally something you buy in the World of Ruin and is the best Robe in the game. The Sneak Ring has a nice bonus to Speed and any attempts I make at stealing.

SwordBreaker is busted rear end good at this point, also normally available at WoR Maranda. It has +15 attack and a small bump to Mag. Pwr. Look at how swole Pipimi is with this stuff.

Over time, I pick up a Chain Saw and Air Anchor as well.

Let's go find some more creatures to murder.

I also encounted some Tabbas from a previous update. Mirage Vest is a real good catch here, with a whopping +9 to Speed and immunity to a few physical hits in every combat.

I don't have a claw user yet but Dragon Claws are the second best claws in the game. The Tempest got hit by a rogue change effect; unfortunately turning Jump into Control is already covered by the FakeMustache. I'd rather use the FakeMustache and a much stronger weapon than the Tempest. That's RNG for you!

Oh and I farmed up a bunch of these I guess.

All the rest of the stores here are too expensive and sell crap that I don't need, much like any tourist trap at a destination. I did find a store that sells Earrings (for 17k!) but as I am a man of the land, I have Hero Rings instead. I gnawed them myself from the bones of my enemies.

The Magic Power bonus does stack with Earrings and other Hero Rings, the Bat. Power does not. Hero Rings and Atlas Armlets don't stack because we wouldn't want Fight to be overpowered now would we? Having eight also lets me spread them around for multi party dungeons.

Well. Decided to give this a try myself. I wound up with Don Corneo replacing Terra, and if Biggs and Wedge are any indication then all the soldiers are little girls... I am less than comfortable with that, for multiple reasons. Haven't seen Locke or the moogles yet, since I just finished the armor section of the intro, so I can't say what they're like, but Corneo's presence alone tells me this will be rather unpleasant.

For the record, Duo (Corneo) has the commands Fight, Mimic, Magic (not natural), and Item. Haven't gotten far enough to see anyone else yet, but he's... kinda bad out of the armor (which had some decent commands except for the complete inability to heal). Doesn't help that he's statistically inferior to Saber, except for a slight edge in Magic Power (and maybe HP. I don't think I checked).

edit: Locke has been replaced with an off-color Lenna named Nia, whose commands are Fight, Tools, Sketch, and Magic. Makes Duo a lot more viable, especially since I started with some equipment that teaches Fire 2 and found something else that teaches Fire 3. Moogles, meanwhile, are a bunch of copies of Crono from Chrono Trigger; Mog (or rather, Knives) himself has Fight, SwdTech, Steal, and Item- odd combination, but workable.

Edgar, meanwhile, has become a color-reversed Mario named Marcil, and his commands are Fight, Morph, Magic (still no natural users yet), and Item. Judging by the portrait, Sabin has become FF9's Garnet, and his (now her) name is Ankh. The spoiler file says her commands are Fight, Refquak (Reflect??? followed by Quake; sounds like it could be handy once I find a way to not get wrecked by Quake), W-Sourm (yes, doublecasting Sour Mouth, and thus guaranteed to ruin almost anything's day with ridiculous numbers of status problems), and Item. Definitely a status-infliction specialist; fortunately, Sour Mouth is a good choice of ability for said specialist. Meanwhile, Kefka has to put up with the indignity of being a Mr. Saturn.

Also, I checked, and I have no Rage user at all. Can't say I'm too broken up about that; I never could use Gau well.

I've played a a few fair bit of seeds, trying to find one that I enjoy, and this has been an issue for most. They need to make a secret code to ensure you can get Heal Force on Terra, if possible. That, or do some kind of check where if Heal Force hasn't been assigned, they throw 20 or 30 Tinctures into your inventory.

Esper names aren't randomized but you'll notice I can't equip any of them on Minori. This is the dancingmaduin code at work.

These are the only two people in the current party that can equip an Esper. Bolt and Poison are whatever, Warp is very handy. It can be used to escape a "Hard To Run" battle and also leave a dungeon you're in. We'll check the other Espers once we get someone that can equip them.

I also snagged a couple of these from a mob in the city. Doom on a proc is cool, Evade is cool, I'm not real big on the Soul Sabre's gimmick otherwise. It drains MP instead of HP. Sure, that might be useful in a niche but it's not something you'll want equipped all the time. Usually a creature you'll need to drain MP to kill will also be immune to Doom.

Listen to me, god dammit! We can't advance the game unless you let us pretend to get our Opera Floozy captured.

I always feel like somebody's watching me
And I have no privacy
I always feel like somebody's watching me
Tell me is it just a dream?

I've never heard of a grim post-apocalyptic opera before. Maybe I'm just uncultured.

Wait...where's our old white dude? I'm so confused.

Special sprites like this don't get replaced.

This is a textless ROM. I have no idea what this letter says.

I refuse to ruin one of the best parts of FF6 with my pointless banter so we're skipping the singing scene.

GOTTA GO FAST

Awarmeli are the armless gimp wizards, Bryora are the mini-dragons. I couldn't run away even if I wasn't in a pincer attack. These things are jerks and the rats here are almost always a pain in Permadeath runs. Luckily, if you run out of time here, it doesn't count as an Annihilation so you can keep trying.

They're also very dangerous with all those skills. Lucky for me I dodged all the rest of the rats and didn't have to fight them.

I'm sorry I lied again, I murdered most of them.

God, the loving opera house rats. The randomizer turns an originally trivial area into a potentially harrowing one. Personally I couldn't get through in time unless I dodged all but one of the rats, because they had been yanked up to miniboss stats.

I feel like they almost always have Can't Run or at least Hard To Run. They're no slouches in vanilla either if you've been taking it easy.

In vanilla I never felt like I needed to grind, in my Beyond Chaos run I absolutely did because half my characters had no abilities that would carry them, they had to struggle through with Fight or similar plain stuff.

Well, I've come back to this after what is no doubt far too long of a hiatus. I... don't recognize Banon, and his portrait is blurry (sorta resembles Locke's vanilla portrait, I think?) so I can't figure him out that way; I don't think I'll need to worry too much about him dying, since he's got good equipment and GP Rain (Sketch I'm not so sure about). At least the Returners' Hideout was quite generous. I mean, I got a Mystery Veil (currently only usable by Marcil and Ankh, but a very large upgrade in basically every way) and Genji Armor (an even bigger upgrade in every way) there. The Regal Cutlass they came with isn't too great, since it drops Duo's MBlock to 0 (mainly using it because it's a 29-point upgrade in attack power over the MithrilKnife I was using before), and the Ninja Gear has the issue of dropping both Vigor and Magic Power (on the bright side, it gives a lot of defense and boosts Speed by 2, the latter of which I desperately need), but at least they sell Dried Meat for cheap here (probably my best option for healing for the foreseeable future; Tonics are hard to find and surprisingly expensive, I don't think I've found a place to buy Potions yet, and I have no way to learn any Cure spells at this point).

Okay, just got my first Natural Magic user: Celes' replacement is Hassan (Delita sprite with a sort of "dark knight" palette, command list is R-Wild, Throw, and Magic). Seems quite useful. Starting spells are Cure, Demi, W Wind, and Imp; no good damaging spells in that list (and the spoiler log says that he won't get any until level 43, but that'll give both Ice 2 and Pearl), but Cure alone makes Hassan worth it.

Cure is a godsend when it's early game. You're usually broke and can't afford much healing, if there is any available. If your commands are good enough to easily farm GP, you probably don't need the healing.

...Huh. Remember how I had something that teaches Fire 3? Turns out TunnelArmr was weak to Fire, so I wound up one-shotting it.

Also, an update on Mako: Natural Magic user #2. Commands are GP Rain, Jump, and Magic, starting spells are Fire, Bolt, Poison, Rasp, and Mute. Spoiler log says he(?) only naturally learns Cure 3 (not Cure or Cure 2), but he does so at an absurdly low level (26). I'm not gonna need THAT much healing anytime soon, I can guarantee that.

edit: ...WTF. Cyan's replacement (a pigeon named Kaoru) is also a Natural Magic user. Commands are OverLag (apparently Overcast followed by Lagomorph), ?-Heal, and Magic, starting spells are Cure, Antdot (which is nice, since the enemies around Doma poison), Mute, and Safe. Ankh's scenario is pretty drat magical.

Last time, we cheated a little and got all of our jobs ahead of time by tweeting everything at Gilgabot at once. I like having all my jobs ready to go, you know? Today, we're going to rush through the Wind Shrine and beat the poo poo out of Wing Raptor, then we're off to Tule!

It's so nice that the game gives you a boat so early, so we ca- why is everyone looking at me like that?

IT'S FIESTA TIME, BABY!

Alright alright, fine, we'll go to the regular update. Last time we cheated at a game of chance to convinced a kidnapper to instead take us to the Imperial City.

His airship doesn't have much special for sale though Warp Stones are kinda cheap.

Albrook is the nearest town and is pretty disappointing.

Out of all this stuff, I only buy a Czarina Ring to see what it does.

Low HP Shell/Safe aren't useful at all but +10% MBlock is pretty nice.

Like I said, enemy locations are weird. These little things are supposed to be in Zozo and the Phantom Train, not here. They don't like asteroids.

Final Fantasy Mystic Quest: Fossil Labyrinth - I rented this game as a kind once and hated it. I actually didn't like RPGs at all until a friend loaned me his copy of this game for my birthday and I fell in love.

We're immediately set upon by some LARPers, mostly the red Dowes and their cardboard katanas. Dowe really doesn't like someone named Ray. Probably their boss at the office job. I feel like the Dinox is just being lazy and reusing their Narshe Guard costume.

Final Fantasy VII: Fighting - They do come with their own music! I'm honestly not sure what triggers it but it's attached to certain formations.

Neither of the first two are all that impressive. Little bit more attack on the Cards and slightly worse defense on the helmet. I'm still curious who my Gambler is going to be because I would love to give them those Trump cards. They're actually 21 Bat.Pow lower but have a small bonus to speed and a nice bonus to Evade that the regular ones don't have. 25% chance to kill something that isn't immune to Death is just icing.

I also found:
Two X-potions
Two Bio Blasters
More Cards
Poison Rod
Vanilla Earrings

And this handy little fella! A few extra points of damage but also a negative to MBlock. Attack procs like Shiva there, if they are normally Multi Target, should only target the person you hit with them. I had a Guardian dagger once with Merton as a proc. Hell of a thing to have as early as Mt. Koltz.

This is normally the best Heavy Shield in the game. The other three are Heavy, Golden and Diamond Shields. All the really good ones are considered universal because everyone but Umaro can equip them. This one is a bad example of a Crystal Shield, lower in everything but the Evade.

This sprite is so freaky looking. I don't even know what it's supposed to BE.

Maybe it'll go down smooth like the other guy.

The arm doesn't appreciate being punched but the main body looooooves some Pearl action.

Sprites are silly sometimes.

Bolt 3 has a kickin' rad animation and sound effect.

This boss had some decent skills but didn't really use them to full effect. Which is fine, I hate the minecart section.

We have a Tools user! Control is also a good thing to have. Many dangerous creatures can be neutered with that command.

I said they were dangerous but I didn't mention their relatively low HP count. These Cranes go down like chumps.

We made it! I can't believe we made it!

A golden helix streaked skyward from the Helvault. A thunderous explosion shattered the silver monolith and Avacyn emerged, free from her prison at last.

I got a Bannon with a Crusader proc the other day, which was a very scary few seconds.

What are your thoughts on opening chests in permadeath runs? Usually theyll have sweet things, but especially on promising seeming seeds I'm beginning to think they're just not worth the risk.

I used to open all of them. Recently I've learned a few things.

-Never ever ever open the chests in Doma Castle in the WoB, you will inevitably get something like KatanaSoul.
-The chests that upgrade in Narshe and Figaro Cave will still upgrade their tier so you have a chance of getting better items if you wait until the WoR.
-This also applies to the outside chests in South Figaro.
-The chests in Figaro Castle are almost always never worth it. You're at your weakest and the chests tend to either have garbage or a MiaB.
-Additionally, any outdoor chests (like the ones in South Figaro) will be upgraded further in the final dungeon if you happen to get that map.

So basically, ignore everything until Mt. Koltz, get some of it later, and the rest sometime in the WoR. Save South Figaro for the final dungeon just in case.

Just curious, what do Ifrit and Shiva teach and who can use them?

Maybe since ProtoArmors are bugged out of rages they get bugged out of the randomizer?

All in good time, my friend. Saber gets one of them and the other is a ~*mystery*~

That's possible.

Just popping to with an announcement: Version 3 of Beyond Chaos EX has been released!

code:
Modes:
	* The randomizer now prompts you for a mode.
	* 'normal' mode...should be self-explanatory.
	* 'ancientcave', 'speedcave', and 'racecave' have been promoted to modes.
	* A 'katn' mode added for kefka at narshe races.
		• It automatically turns on the 'madworld' code.
		• It includes Darkslash's 'easyrace' changes, most notably banning certain types of enemy specials and getting rid of monsters-in-boxes.
		• It starts you with some random magicite.
		• It sends you to the 'THE END' screen after Terra flies away.
	* A 'dragonhunt' mode added.
		• It starts in the WoR with the airship, Celes, Edgar, Setzer, and Gau (or whatever character randomly replaces him if the 'r' flag is on.)
		• Characters start at a slightly higher level than with just the 'worringtriad' code.
		• You are not required to enter Kefka's tower to encounter any of the dragons (but you still can encounter them there, if you want).
			◦ One of the dragons in Kefka's tower can be found in Jidoor.
			◦ The other can be found inside Zone Eater.
		• It sends you to the 'THE END' screen after you defeat all 8 dragons.
	* Some flags and codes are not allowed in certain modes. (For example, you cannot use 'worringtriad' with 'katn' mode, for obvious reasons.) After you select a mode, only the allowed flags will be displayed, and if you enter prohibited ones, they will be ignored. If you try to enter a code that doesn't apply to the mode, you will get a warning message and it will be ignored.

Hints:
	* There's a certain NPC who gives you information about a dangerous place. That hint has been updated to give correct information for the random seed.
	* MADUIN gives you a hint, if you pay attention. It won't help you on your current seed though...

Flags:
	* includes a built-in speeddial '!' for the recommended new player flags.
	* 'c':
		• Uses a new palette randomizer code written by emberling.
	* 'd':
		• Some new secret items are added.
	* 'f':
		• Enemies cannot have Mega Volt in the solo Terra section.
	* 'g':
		• Fixed a bug that allowed dances to sometimes have the same ability twice.
	* 'k':
		• Some clues have been reworded to be clearer.
	* 'l':
		• Fixed a bug that allowed two blitzes to have the same input.
	* 'm':
		• Enemies cannot have Mega Volt in the solo Terra section.
		• Enemies can only have up to 65,534 MP, to prevent a softlock with Control.
	* 'r':
		• also randomizes the locations of Mog, Umaro, and Gogo.
			◦ Mog (whereever he is) is required to get the character in Umaro's cave.
			◦ Mog can be at the Fanatics' Tower or Relm can be in Umaro's cave, but not both at the same time
			◦ Mog, Umaro, and Gogo are not allowed to appear in Gau's place (i.e., just show up on the airship.)
		• character locations are given in the spoiler log.
	* 't':
		• randomizes Vicks's and Wedge's salaries (i.e., the starting money).
		• selection of which monsters are in boxes has been adjusted:
			◦ Chests in areas that don't have random encounters now base their monster power on the monsters in a similar place in the story progression, rather than picking monsters without regard to power or in some cases based on the power of an erroneous monster group. (This applies to, among others, the top floor of Zozo, the Narshe treasure house, the Imperial Base, non-dream Doma, and towns generally.)
			◦ It attempts to more strictly limit the power of monsters to something not too high above the base power and that have drops not TOO much worse than the chest's value.
			◦ The above changes DO NOT apply to Clocks and empty chests in the Phoenix Cave.
			◦ Some enemies that appear in event battles are no longer flagged as unused. Therefore, they are no longer placed in chests with very high probability. (Examples include: Balloons, K@N enemies, and the Mag Roaders on the mine cart.)
		• If Lone Wolf's item becomes GP, he tells you that instead of incorrectly saying he has an item.
		• Does not prevent Gau from returning after leaping when the 'o' and 'w' flags are not used.

Codes:
	* 'airship':
		• Places the airship outside Narshe even when 'notawaiter' is active. (This has the minor side effect of making it so that you appear on the world map immediately after the Marshal fight rather than at the Narshe entrance.)
		• Places the airship at the raft landing spot when used with 'worringtriad'.
		• No longer causes the airship to disappear if you land it before completing Daryl's Tomb when used with 'worringtriad'.
		• Doesn't allow you to go to the Floating Continent from the World of Ruin.
	* 'alasdraco':
		• Randomize some things in the opera, including:
			◦ Draco, Maria, Ralse, and Impressario sprites
			◦ their singing voices
			◦ what Maria throws off the balcony
			◦ what Ultros drops
	* 'ancientcave':
		• is now a mode. Don't enter the code.
	* 'dancingmaduin':
		• The probability of espers being assigned to multiple characters is now based on their rank. Low-ranked espers (those you get earlier in the game) are more likely to be assigned multiple characters. Crusader and Ragnarok can never get multiple characters.
	* 'johnnyachaotic'/'johnnydmad':
		• emberling added a bunch of new songs
	* 'madworld':
		• has a higher minimum price for superballs.
	* 'makeover':
		• has even more sprites from CtrlxZ.
	    • works even without 'partyparty' or 's'
		• different versions of the same sprite are grouped so that no more than 1 sprite in the group will be selected. e.g., adult Rydia and kid Rydia will not be selected in the same seed. (from emberling)
		• has some new codes from emberling that change how sprites are selected:
			◦ 'novanilla': replaces all vanilla sprites
			◦ 'frenchvanilla': vanilla sprites get no special treatment; they can be selected with equal weight to new sprites
			◦ 'cloneparty': multiple versions of the same sprite are not only allowed, but encouraged.
		• sprites are now tagged with categories, and there are new codes from emberling that change the weight of particular categories:
			◦ 'no{category}': excludes all sprites in the category. e.g., 'noboys' will exclude all male sprites
			◦ 'hate{category}': makes sprites in the category less likely to be selected. e.g., 'hatepets' will make animals less likely to be selected
			◦ 'like{category}': makes sprites in the category more likely to be selected. e.g., 'likegirls' will make female sprites more likely to be selected
			◦ 'love{category}': selects ONLY sprites in this category (or one of these categories, if you use more than one love code) e.g., 'lovepotato' will only select silly sprites
			◦ categories available are currently:
				** 'boys'
				** 'girls'
				** 'kids'
				** 'pets'
				** 'potato'
	* 'notawaiter':
		• Skips the Daryl cutscene. (Sorry, Daryl.)
		• Places the airship outside Narshe when 'airship' is active. (This has the minor side effect of making it so that you appear on the world map immediately after the Marshal fight rather than at the Narshe entrance.)
		• Doesn't softlock on Halloween.
	* [REDACTED — INVESTIGATIVE TECHNIQUE]
	* 'racecave':
		• is now a mode. Don't use the code.
	* 'speedcave':
		• is now a mode. Don't enter the code.
	* 'strangejourney':
		• automatically includes the skips in notawaiter because they fix a lot of issues with cutscenes.
	* [REDACTED — HARM TO ONGOING MATTER]
	* 'worringtriad':
		• Fixes some bugs when combined with 'airship'. See 'airship' for details.
		• Doesn't make Thamasa a ghost town.

Misc:
	* Remembers your last used ROM. Just leave the ROM blank and hit enter to reuse the previous one.
	* Applies Novalia Spirit's "Allergic Dog" patch, which fixes a bug where equipment with auto-Float causes Shadow to lose Interceptor.
	* Applies Leet Sketcher's Y Equip Relic patch, which lets you swap between the Equip and Relic screens by pressing the Y button.
	* Applies Assassin's "That drat Yellow Streak fix" patch, which fixes a visual bug in Gogo's status menu.
Get it here, if you want.

A second, minor announcement: expect an update sometime this weekend, maybe even today!
