Also Ecuador just handed over all of Assange's posessions to the US.

BBC posted:

The country's foreign minister José Valencia authorised the seizure of equipment earlier this month.

The material includes manuscripts, legal papers, medical records and electronic equipment.

Mr Assange's lawyer said the move was "completely unprecedented in the history of asylum".

"Ecuador is committing a flagrant violation of the most basic norms of the institution of asylum by handing over all the asylee's personal belongings indiscriminately to the country that he was being protected from," added lawyer Aitor Martinez.

Mr Valencia said last week that the decision to share items with US authorities should be taken by the prosecutor's office.

But it totally was not a political decision to kick him out.

Sajid Javid (the British Home Secretary, also a massive rear end who hates migrants but that's par for the course) signed Assange's extradition request to the US today.

He's also already being held in solitary and denied mental health support in the UK, as per the UN report considering it torture:

BBC posted:

Julian Assange has suffered "prolonged exposure to psychological torture", the UN's torture expert has said.

Nils Melzer urged Britain not to extradite the Wikileaks founder, warning that his human rights would be violated and that he is not fit to stand trial.

He also accused "several democratic states" of a "concerted effort to break [Assange's] will".

Mr Melzer, who met Assange earlier in May, told the Washington Post that he was initially reluctant to get involved in the case, as he is not a fan of Wikileaks and considered its founder to be a bad actor.

What did Nils Melzer say?

"I've worked in many areas of war in my life, in situations of violence, and I've talked to victims of persecution around the world and I've seen very serious atrocities," Mr Melzer told the BBC.

"But [what] I have never seen is that a single person has been deliberately isolated and, I would say, persecuted - not prosecuted, but persecuted - by several democratic states in a concerted effort to eventually break his will."

Anyway how's Chelsea Manning's case coming along? Is she still in prison again?

She's still in prison, and still being fined for every day she's in prison.

Technically she's not being punished, she's being coerced. That's the legal rationale for this poo poo anyway.

So for my biannual check, how's Chelsea doing?

Assange is still in prison and in solitary despite his sentence ending, because he's waiting to be extradited to the US in February.

Also the CIA wiretapped his lawyers and broke into their offices, but no biggie no need to invistigate or punish anyone, they're are allies:

quote:

Wikileaks co-founder Julian Assange is to remain in prison when his jail term ends because of his "history of absconding", a judge has ruled.

He was due to be released on 22 September after serving his sentence for breaching bail conditions.

...

Asking for a three-month delay to proceedings, Assange's barrister, Mark Summers QC, told the court there was a "direct link" between the "reinvigoration" of the investigation and US President Donald Trump's administration.

Our case will be that this is a political attempt to signal to journalists the consequences of publishing information," he said. "It is legally unprecedented."

Mr Summers also claimed the US was involved in invading his client's legal privilege.

"The American state has been actively engaged in intruding into privileged discussions between Mr Assange and his lawyers in the embassy, also unlawful copying of their telephones and computers (and) hooded men breaking into offices," he said.

Bit of a crosspost from UKMT, but

quote:

On 1 November 2019, Nils Melzer expressed alarm at the continued deterioration of Julian Assange’s health since his arrest and detention earlier this year, saying his life was now at risk. The UN Special Rapporteur on torture said

"While the US Government prosecutes Mr. Assange for publishing information about serious human rights violations, including torture and murder, the officials responsible for these crimes continue to enjoy impunity".

He adds "Despite the medical urgency of my appeal, and the seriousness of the alleged violations, the UK has not undertaken any measures of investigation, prevention and redress required under international law."

As predicted by Melzer, shortly after the Special Rapporteur’s visit, Mr. Assange had to be transferred to the prison’s health care unit. "He continues to be detained under oppressive conditions of isolation and surveillance, not justified by his detention status".

According to this expert "The blatant and sustained arbitrariness shown by both the judiciary and the Government in this case suggests an alarming departure from the UK’s commitment to human rights and the rule of law. This is setting a worrying example, which is further reinforced by the Government’s recent refusal to conduct the long-awaited judicial inquiry into British involvement in the CIA torture and rendition programme."

Anyway, how's Chelsea? I only see things from the Brit side of the pond, local media hasn't written any articles about her for what feels like years now.

I don't think he's doing a very good job of it

can't say that Russia wasn't involved, because hey someone had to hack those emails, but Assange probably wasn't in on it directly, he probably did it because Clinton said she wanted to put him in prison and joked about killing him via a drone missile

Seems like blackout in the US too, she's still in prison, still presumably dealing with the isolation the same way she has for years.

Re-reading the wikipedia article on Reality Winner pulled up some gems i wasn't previously aware of.

quote:

Winner was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal for "aiding in 650 enemy captures, 600 enemies killed in action and identifying 900 high[-]value targets."[17]

quote:

Federal agents found her diary during a search of her home, in which she allegedly expressed support for Taliban leaders and Osama bin Laden.[24] The U.S. magistrate judge who presided over Winner's bail hearing said: "She seems to have a fascination with the Middle East and Islamic terrorism," and quoted her writing: "It's a Christlike vision to have a fundamentalist Islamic state."[24] However, one of the prosecutors at her bail hearing said: "The government is not in any way suggesting the defendant has become a jihadist or that she is a Taliban sympathizer."[25]

quote:

On August 24, President Trump tweeted: "Ex-NSA contractor to spend 63 months in jail over 'classified' information. Gee, this is 'small potatoes' compared to what Hillary Clinton did! So unfair Jeff, Double Standard."

Winner expressed appreciation for his support, saying, "I can't thank him enough."

quote:

Can you describe what you were seeing in in Afghanistan with your own eyes?

In my own unit, I saw no commitment to learning about the Afghan people or trying to understand them or their culture. It was more about taking pleasure in going out every night and killing people with impunity. Even on nights when we didn't have kinetic engagements, we would just roll up to villages and ransack them; we’d separate women and children, put bags over people's heads, lock them up in flex cuffs.

We’d call them detainees, which is just a euphemism for prisoner, and we’d do this kind of thing every night, even sometimes without proper intelligence. Most of the guys I was with—even and especially the leadership—relished in the fact that we could kill human beings. So, for me, I was trying to resolve this contradiction because no one over here was threatening freedom or democracy or anything like that. We were just going in their homes and threatening their villages and were creating nothing but chaos and destruction.

After a mission, we’d have a debrief and, if something particularly violent would happen, officers would say something like, “That was kickass!” They said if we didn’t like it, we were in the wrong place. Even the army chaplain would give us these kinds of speeches. I remember one time it a chaplain said we were about “bringing wrath upon these people,” and I was like, “Wow, these people have some kind of crusader fantasy.” It was pretty unsettling.

I started to think, “If I were a guy in Afghanistan, how would I feel about this?” I think it's no secret that many people in America would take great umbrage if someone was walking through their homes. For me, I couldn't shake the fact that what we were doing was wrong and morally reprehensible.
