apparantly one of the things Lucas was always super adamant about was that the Force is totally binary, no gray area or anything like that, so I bet he really hated that original script

Oh sure, I know what you're referring to. Things here and there. But the overall story was planned, broken into 3 parts, a time skip between 1 and 2, etc. I mean, the prequels are telling a story that's already told - Palpatine takes over the galaxy, Anakin falls to the dark side. It's not made up from scratch.

In comparison, the Sequels were 3 separate films that made it up each time.

Where does 'Splinter of the minds eye' fit into the preplanned overall story?
I read somewhere that it was originally planned to be the sequel to starwars before starwars became huge & they could suddenly afford big budgets.

Yeah, it was too dark, they hated the Vader reveal, they thought it was a random retcon that didn't make any sense, and people absolutely flippin' HATED Lando for what he did to Han and the fact that he was a black man in Star Wars to the point where people would accost Billy Dee Williams in the street and scream at him over it. So that's why yeah, the Ewoks exist and there's multiple scenes explaining the hows and whys of Vader being Anakin Skywalker, and the movie going out of its way make Lando a huge hero in its second and third acts.

When I went to watch TFA some rear end in a top hat kid spoiled the Han death which sort of sucked but oh well

It is a retcon though. Vader may have suggested “father” to Lucas at some point, but it wasn’t in ANH, or even in the early scripts of ESB. The use of the name Vader dates from a stage of drafting for the original movie when the hero straight up had a normal (Jedi) dad who was alive and everything.

Yep. People being upset about Star Wars has been the one consistent thing I've known about Star Wars since I was a kid. People hated Empire. People hated Jedi. People hated the Special Editions. People hated the EU. People hated the Prequels. People hated The Clone Wars. People hated the Sequels. People hated the Disney+ shows. There's a reason why the current face of Star Wars fandom on the internet is weeping misogynist rear end in a top hat.

Me? I'm like "Yeah, it's all trash. So what?" I also can't stand the concept of fandoms anymore either.

From my understanding George Lucas's first wife was heavily involved in the first three movies, cleaning scripts up and giving ideas on how to tighten it, along with batting down his wilder ideas because they wouldn't work with the tech at the time. Then between that and the prequels they got divorced so everything after that is purestrain George

This is also the primary reason the Special Editions exist: to screw Marcia Lucas out of any residuals from the OT.

Yes, she saved all of the original trilogy either through editing or by going directly to Carrie Fisher and telling her point blank to lay off the coke because it was wrecking her performance (because nobody else would do it).

The quality of a Star Wars film is directly proportional to how much influence Marcia Lucas had over it.

A fun read if you're ever bored is Splinter of the Mind's Eye, the book that was written between ANH and ESB. Luke and Leia definitely have a bit of a romance going, and Han & Chewie are completely absent, because they hadn't gotten Harrison Ford to sign on for the sequels yet

I don't know much about EU gray force stuff, but in general, having a story that ends with "balance the light and dark sides" doesn't understand what those things two things are supposed to be. Although, changed lucas' idea that the using the dark side magically corrupted you and turns you more and more evil until you were completely consumed and needed someone else to pull you out of it was always pretty dumb.

IDK about the Ep9 script but on the rare occasion it was discussed in the EU stuff it was less "balancing the 2 opposing sides" and more "it's not necessarily a mutually exclusive binary" like, you can be a good person and still get angry when someone cuts you off in traffic, you don't have to purge that emotion entirely lest you become and evil maniac

Yep. As I understand it Lucas' idea is The Force is benign/good. It's kind of the "default state" of the Force until beings tap into it to wield it. It's not a "light side" so much as it's just what the force is until it becomes polluted. The Dark Side is a corruption of The Force that happens when it's wielded contrary to the Will of the Force for vulgar selfishness or aggressive violence.
