All three trilogies have a kind of "sloshing from thing to thing reactive panic to the reaction to the previous movie" feel to them. The only one that doesn't is Empire Strikes Back because it was the first real sequel and the reaction to the first Star Wars movie was just "more Star Wars now". Then Return of the Jedi kicked off the wave of trying to fix the poo poo people were mad about in the previous movie that has persisted for literally half a century now.

Being too young to know at the time, what did people not like about Empire that RotJ reacted to? Was it perceived as too dark so they added more child-friendly elements to RotJ?

Yeah, it was too dark, they hated the Vader reveal, they thought it was a random retcon that didn't make any sense, and people absolutely flippin' HATED Lando for what he did to Han and the fact that he was a black man in Star Wars to the point where people would accost Billy Dee Williams in the street and scream at him over it. So that's why yeah, the Ewoks exist and there's multiple scenes explaining the hows and whys of Vader being Anakin Skywalker, and the movie going out of its way make Lando a huge hero in its second and third acts.

Its interesting to know that the Star Wars fandom has apparently always been terrible and not just a recent development.

The older and older the I get the more and more I dislike fandoms in general.

Why would he come back to play Luke if he didn't agree with the direction they were taking with his character?
