Problem

My mom is freaking out because she opened a fake e-mail from one of my aunts. It was the usual "I have found something interesting!" and a bullshit link. She opened the link, it redirected her to a weightloss page and she closed it. She is now paranoid that "viruses are in the computer."

She didn't download anything or give her info so it might be fine but I am worried it might have installed some sort of malware.

Specs

I don't think this matters much but we are looking at a Gateway PC with Windows 8 (NT 6.2) installed on it.
10gb of ram, AMD A6-3620 APU with Radeon HD Graphics 2.20 GHz processor, and a 64bit processor.

Also gently caress Windows 8 so much

Fixes

None so far because I am not sure on next steps. My mom is worried my Dad might get mad so I have disconnected the router and told then the internet is out until I can verify the computer is fine.

Question

How do I make the computer safe for old people again?

Update:

Did a scan with MalwareBytes and didn't find anything. I am assuming that trusting my mom did not enter info and allegedly didn't install anything my parents' identities are not on the darkweb because of this. Maybe because of other stuff but not this one.

I'd run these three things:
https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/tdsskiller/
https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/
https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/junkware-removal-tool/

Also, do a scan using windows defender offline.

Also, install uBlock Origin on whatever browser is being used.

Would you still run Junkware Removal? It says it is unsupported since 2017 and recommends adwcleaner instead.

Update:

Ran adwremoval and tdsskiller. Adwremoval killed a few PUPs. There was a popup that was appearing in the browser which is now gone.

I am not going to run Junkware Removal but I can't get Windows Defender enabled. My parents had a trial copy of Norton (now well expired) bundled with their computer and even after uninstalling it, Windows Defender is acting like it's there.

So long story short, some of it is going well, some of it not.

The big issue is Windows 8 is loving garbage.

Yea, it was last updated in November of last year so it's out of date. It's not going to hurt anything either way.

Yea, the optimal solution is to install W10 on the machine.

Norton does have a removal tool available for download:
