Yes, the impression I get from this island is that it's spooky in the same way that, say, Halloween is spooky. Areas like the Buddy Bee Hive are on a whole other level.

Yeah, I agree -- in the same way that other prominent enemies represent Jimmy's perception of his fears, I think the Mass's characterisation is based on Jimmy's perception of his cancer: it's a cruel, ruthless bully that hates him for no reason and just wants to ruin his life and destroy him.

One thing the thread hasn't really commented on here is what a butt Andrew can be. While the party go out to risk life and limb against the Pulsating Mass, he stays back and researches Helga -- who, while being family, is also an adult who is perfectly capable of looking after herself and presumably far away from the Mass's attention right now -- and, when he turns up no leads, loses himself in Happy Smile Woman manga. When his family come back, having defeated the Pulsating Mass in battle and achieved exactly what he sent them out to do, all he has for them is sarcastic put-downs and a new mission, one that he doesn't even come along to because he'd rather read his books. And the irony is, at least part of Buck's problem right now is that he's trying to process complicated emotions and grief. It's exactly the sort of thing that a decent father should be helping his teenaged son cope with. But Buck's a problem that can't be solved with rationality and logic, so Andrew just sends a nine-year-old with cancer to go sort his mess out for him.

WRT the math dungeon, I honestly don't think that necessarily all of the secret dungeons represent anything so concrete as one of Jimmy's fears. Some of them just feel like nightmares. Nightmares don't always make sense, they don't always map to things that you fear will happen. Sometimes they're just terrifying reflections of things from your day-to-day life.

Lars has depression; he's lived with it all his life, and what I took out of that was that when something floors the rest of his family and makes them wonder what the point of going on, for him that's Tuesday. He can be their pudgy, dumbass anchor when they need him. Which kinda neatly ties into his mechanics in combat, too.
