I don't think it's that unusual for grade school kids anywhere to come to strange conclusions about other countries. I could see a combination of national pride, American stereotypes, and just students not paying full attention in history class causing the misconception that the USA is some weird backwater full of cowboys who eat nothing but hamburgers.

When I was in elementary school I refused to believe that NYC had shopping malls or supermarkets because “where would the parking lot be?”

I missed something on this run... you started the game with gently caress-all moneys because you're a teacher and, as I can attest, they earn shite wages. You spent most of it at the start of the game as per usual, but you've stopped at a few shops along the way and you had a bunch of money again... what did I miss? Seriously not taking the piss; I'm genuinely confused. I thought that the point of the low-money professions was to spend all of the player's money at the start of the game and then have to get by with tuppence in the pocket and eating sand for nourishment.

On another note, this game made me break out the original OT. I've never beaten it with the farmer who has only $400, so I started with the carpenter who has $800. Everything was grand until suddenly a thief somehow stole all four of my oxen in the middle of the night. I'm not sure if he led them away with yummy treats or somehow carried off four enormous beasts, but I quit at that point. *That*, right there, was taking the piss.

I imagined the Hamburgler somehow carrying away this huge bloody bovine on his shoulders with exaggerated tippy-toe stealth.

Check the hill's conditions.

Then wait, rest awhile, and check them again to get an idea of how long full erosion will take.

When I was in fifth grade the school introduced quizzes you could take on the computer to prove you'd read a book on a reading list. Each were worth a certain amount of points that could be used to buy snacks, toys and items from a kiosk outside the cafeteria, or 30 minutes of free time in class. I was a fast reader and hoarded the poo poo out of those things and would spend literally half a day at a time smugly playing either Oregon Trail or Sim Ant while the other kids regarded me with hate and envy. Not sure what version it was, but it would've been in 1994 or so.

So I just checked back the updates real quick. We started with $425 and had $12.28 left after the initial burst of shopping before starting the trail. The next time that money was listed for buying stuff was a couple pages later, the game shows us with $512.25, right before Meaty Ore got pneumonia and :rip:.

I didn't see anything listed in the intermediate updates explaining where the extra ~500 bucks came from.

I honestly have no idea either! There's no way to gain money other than trading with people, which I only had to do once to get gunpowder. This is a pretty glitchy ROM though.

I usually assume that I'm the one in error, but it's comforting to know that I'm not entirely mad. If you're keen, I can probably find you another ROM of the game. This one is so loopy that I'm not sure if you're loving with us or if the game is.

Edit: I just remembered that this is OT5 and not II; the two look very similar. Still, the offer stands. I've had a lot of practice bending old games into line.

Double-teaming does not work.

With ropes and chains, we finally make it out of some of the mountains. But we're not doing good.

This is all the food we have left.

After finding that we lost our rifle and can't go hunting, we trade a set of clothing for some salt pork. Fight over who will be naked.

We need to gather some more food. We've already identified #3 as chokecherries, so you have the rest to pick from.

Can't believe I missed this thread for so long. It's slightly weird since OT5 is apparently OT2, but with bad cutscenes and the ability to forage for poo poo that will kill you(as opposed to getting generic 'you found some wild fruits/vegetables!' events).

On that note, harvest and eat everything.

From my hazy memories of Oregon Trail 3, which also had this mechanic, I think I recognize those pics and would second this. Know 2 is fine, forget what 3 is but almost certain is fine, 1 am pretty sure is poisonous.

I did some research and it turns out that 5 is even more similar to II than I thought, so I feel less bad about mistaking the latter for the former.

What would be the ultimate difficulty settings to maximise points in this game? I'm only interested in the best possible points at the end without doing metagame challenge things like buying no food to start or loading up on clocks. I know that teacher is the profession with the least money but a 5x score multiplier and that the player doesn't want anyone to die, but apart from that I'm a bit muddy on what influences score.

#2 looks like cherry tomatoes, but Europeans thought tomatoes were poisonous because they look similar to actually poisonous plants. So I second this under the assumption that these are sneaky not-tomatoes.

You want to be a teacher going the longest route possible(as in distance from start city to endpoint) in the earliest year possible, going as fast as possible, while spending as little money as possible and keeping everyone alive and in good health. Also don't use any skill points & keep wagon train morale high. And supplies affect score in some nebulous way.

If you can accomplish all of those things at once you've probably played way too much OTII/5 for one lifetime.

This game is as much luck as skill, though, so if some player is getting that fortunate to pull all of that off in one run then I suggest that he get himself to a casino.
