My memory could be bad as I'm climbing back decades, but I recall having the original OT on the computer in maths class when I was in primary school in England back in the 80s. Firstly, OT1 really got around*. Secondly, my classmates and I learned from this game that the US was incredibly wide on the East-West access and also very hostile. My mum's American and I had visited, but they didn't seem to believe me when I said that the US had petrol-powered cars and other modern amenities. As for the enormous width of the country, I can't really argue as an Englishman; the average person could walk from Cornwall to Ipswich in a few days.

*We also had WITWICarman Sandiego, and for years I thought that she was a real person for whom the eponymous city was named.

I missed something on this run... you started the game with gently caress-all moneys because you're a teacher and, as I can attest, they earn shite wages. You spent most of it at the start of the game as per usual, but you've stopped at a few shops along the way and you had a bunch of money again... what did I miss? Seriously not taking the piss; I'm genuinely confused. I thought that the point of the low-money professions was to spend all of the player's money at the start of the game and then have to get by with tuppence in the pocket and eating sand for nourishment.

On another note, this game made me break out the original OT. I've never beaten it with the farmer who has only $400, so I started with the carpenter who has $800. Everything was grand until suddenly a thief somehow stole all four of my oxen in the middle of the night. I'm not sure if he led them away with yummy treats or somehow carried off four enormous beasts, but I quit at that point. *That*, right there, was taking the piss.

I imagined the Hamburgler somehow carrying away this huge bloody bovine on his shoulders with exaggerated tippy-toe stealth.

I honestly have no idea either! There's no way to gain money other than trading with people, which I only had to do once to get gunpowder. This is a pretty glitchy ROM though.

I usually assume that I'm the one in error, but it's comforting to know that I'm not entirely mad. If you're keen, I can probably find you another ROM of the game. This one is so loopy that I'm not sure if you're loving with us or if the game is.

Edit: I just remembered that this is OT5 and not II; the two look very similar. Still, the offer stands. I've had a lot of practice bending old games into line.

I did some research and it turns out that 5 is even more similar to II than I thought, so I feel less bad about mistaking the latter for the former.

What would be the ultimate difficulty settings to maximise points in this game? I'm only interested in the best possible points at the end without doing metagame challenge things like buying no food to start or loading up on clocks. I know that teacher is the profession with the least money but a 5x score multiplier and that the player doesn't want anyone to die, but apart from that I'm a bit muddy on what influences score.

You want to be a teacher going the longest route possible(as in distance from start city to endpoint) in the earliest year possible, going as fast as possible, while spending as little money as possible and keeping everyone alive and in good health. Also don't use any skill points & keep wagon train morale high. And supplies affect score in some nebulous way.

If you can accomplish all of those things at once you've probably played way too much OTII/5 for one lifetime.

This game is as much luck as skill, though, so if some player is getting that fortunate to pull all of that off in one run then I suggest that he get himself to a casino.

I completely forgot about that! Yes, that’s where it came from.

I was just reading about the whole greenhorn/adventurer/trail guide concept while I was trying to suss out the differences between OT 2 and 5, and I had no idea that there was a cash bonus even though it makes sense now. Fine investigative work, Haifisch. Apparently adventurer's can be demoted if they gently caress up enough, but the game continues and they can be re-elected. Trail guides, who presumably get an even larger wage packet, receive an instant game over if they are demoted, which does bump up the challenge quite a bit. Apparently adventurers and guides have to make larger, more comprehensive decisions, but I'm slightly embarrassed to say that I didn't even notice - what setting were you playing on in the first game that went so well? I keep forgetting that the player is technically one wagon among many.

Also mildly surprised that matches are still an absolute necessity in this game. I honestly thought that flint and tinder was still a thing during the time period.

I'm reading the OT LP on the archives, and it reminded that I misunderstood the original game for years. I'm sure that many of you remember that the choices in classic Oregano Tail were a banker from Boston, a carpenter from Ohio and a farmer from Illinois. I never beat the game with the farmer, but for years and years I thought that each character started from his own place of origin as a mechanic to balance the difficulty, since the wealthier characters were from farther away. It seemed logical, but of course everyone starts in Missouri and the farmer, as they are today, was totally hosed.
