I've known people who didn't go the degree route because they had a job straight out of high school, end up leaving their company after 10 years and end up going to school anyway because they were struggling to get their feet in the front door at many places. I'm not saying it's right, but just that it happens more than you'd think. It's insanely dumb. One thing that I really like about my current place is that they don't put much weight on degrees, the ceo is always telling people he wouldn't have been able to do what he did today as he didn't do a degree (neither did my previous boss until he got promoted to a $$$ position)
