Welcome to Vietnam. I will be playing the war game "FNG", a tabletop war game. Paradox games, while I love them, are not what I am best at LPing, and I figure this would give me an opportunity to construct narratives, interact with people who have contributed characters, and other such fun things that an LP has to offer. I'm honestly playing pretty loose with the rules sometimes, and borrowing from many different versions and rule books of the game depending on what I like, I've also added some of my own mechanics, this isn't going to be as conventional as Grey's wonderful FNG LP. That being said, please enjoy the show. Who and when Who: We will be playing as the United States Army, with characters you submit as the protagonists of our story. You will be facing off against the Local Viet Cong, National Liberation Force, and North Vietnamese Army. When: Our first operations will occur in late 1965. How it works: Since this is a table top wargame (if you're not totally sure what a table top game is, think Dungeons and Dragons or things in that character) there will not be great graphics, as this is about the quality of work I can do. Dice rolls will be posted below descriptions of events happening on the battlefield if they are particularly notable, so I won't be writing "3d6" after every single description. There is a very memorable B-17 Let's Play somewhere on this forum, and that is going to be my model for how I design this. Players might occasionally get actual input on what they do in battle, but for simplicity sake, players get to vote on operations, the operations themselves will be handled by me. The rule style we will play with the Second Edition of FNG, however, I prefer the helicopter and wounding tables of the first, so it might become a bit of an amalgamation, especially if it will make things more interesting. Who can join? Anybody, but there will probably be a waiting list after a certain point. How many troops we have will depend on the level of interest. Most likely I will be starting with a squad of six-ten people in the US ARMY who will be the main focus, but named characters can show up from Australia/New Zealand, South Vietnam, civilians, and the USMC. You can contribute as many characters as you want! There is no time limit, and at anytime you can contribute characters. Character Sheet: Faction: (United States Army, United States Marine Corps, United States Navy (SEALS), Army of the Republic of Vietnam, Australia/New Zealand Army Corps, Civilian Irregular Defense Group, Civilian) Name: Sex: (Civilians only) Age: Hometown: (City, State/Province/Region, Country) Interested in Special Role? (US Army only, this allows your character to show up as a helicopter pilot, tanker, medic, consideration to carry a bigger weapon etc. If approved this will bypass some RNG stuff for roles) Character description: (Not required, I will make one up for you if you don't pick anything, but if you give a description I can assign traits to your character that will possibly be helpful!) I know nothing about FNG but this looks neat! Faction: US Army Name: Arlo Guthrie Age: 18 Hometown: Brooklyn, NY Interested in Special Role? A big loving MG or something equally awful Character description: So pretend the song "Alice's Restaurant" actually happened, but instead of being assigned to the Group W bench and excluded from being drafted on account of his felonious littering charges, the army draft officer is actually really loving pumped about Arlo's claim to want to kill, kill, kill and ships him straight off to Saigon. Antics ensue as the army expects this dude to be a psychopath (but their psychopathic VC murder machine), but in reality Arlo's as anti-war as they get. Going for an early M*A*S*H/Catch-22 vibe here. Faction: United States Army Name: Giuseppe "Joe" Polidoro Age: 24 Hometown: Perth Amboy, New Jersey, USA Interested in Special Role: Nope Character description: Joe Polidoro was born near Bari in Italy. His family relocated to New Jersey following the Second World War. Now 24, Joe is known around town as a kind but dimwitted young man. He worked for a family friend's delicatessen until he was drafted. He is madly in love with the owner's daughter, Miriam, and is convinced he will go home and marry her. Miriam merely considers Joe a friend, but Joe doesn't realize this. He believes that segregation is immoral and "stupid." This belief mostly comes from the fact that Miriam became active in the Civil rights movement when she attended college, and Joe absorbed many of her beliefs in the process of hanging on her every word. Miriam encouraged Joe to flee the country to avoid the draft. He did not. Joe also has a grudge against communism in general and against Asian communism specifically. His favorite older cousin was maimed badly during the Battle of Inchon, and Joe harbors a fantasy of avenging his cousin's injuries. The fact that Korea and Vietnam are two entirely different places hasn't occurred to him. Joe is not particularly smart nor athletically gifted, but he does have some experience with automotive repair, as his father runs a garage in Perth Amboy. When he left for boot camp, he informed his mother that his hopes are to "free Vietnam" and to "be able to walk when it's all done."

I also know nothing about FNG, but sure why not. Faction: United States Army Name: Hideki Tanaka Age: 26 Hometown: Seattle, WA Interested in Special Role? Helicopter pilot Character description: Hideki Tanaka is second generation Japanese-American, and spent a formative period of his adolescence in the west coast internment camps. His own father enlisted in the US Army to prove his loyalty to his adopted home, and so has Hideki. While he's thankful the cloud of suspicion he's used to dealing with has diminished, he still tends to keep to himself much of the time. In part, in an effort to avoid becoming too attached to the soldiers he flies into combat - and less often, brings home.

Hell yes, I'll be glad to participate. I'm a bit sad there's no way to play a NVA soldier though. Tell me, Top Hats Monthly, would you accept NVA characters, but not as players, simple cameos that may or may not show up on the enemy side during mission? If this idea smells like bad tuna, or if it's more trouble than it's worth, then forget it, it's just a suggestion. Anyway, here's my character: Faction: United States Army Name: Ethan Lawson Age: 25 Hometown: Norfolk, VA Interested in Special Role: Medic, or Heavy Weapon Character description: Ethan's father fought in Korea, and the effects on his behavior and personality left a deep mark on the young man, just slightly less than his stories about this ''loving war on the loving other end of the loving world''. He has a clearer idea than most recruits about what's waiting for him on the battlefield. He complains rarely and is clear-headed, but his nature as a pessimist and gallows-humor fan didn't win him many friends during his life. But he doesn't mind that much. After all, less friends means less pain if and when they die. Or less pain for them if and when HE bites it.

Other great military pillocks have often made up for their lack of wit by preternatural strength or woodcraft and marksmanship learned at home when they should have been in school, or even simply by a dumb willingness to follow orders. Rodger Dodger Private First Class US Army Rifleman "Aww man this is gonna suck man." Bio: Rodger had always considered himself unlucky. From a poor neighborhood in NYC, Rodger tended to somehow always end up getting both feet in his mouth whenever something happened. If it was being in a fight he would trip over and get his face beaten in. If he was chatting with a girl someone would swoop in and he would end up humiliating himself. A high school graduate he got by by the skin of his teeth, and no way with the grades to get into college. After graduation, scrambling to try and find a job when the draft started he was among the first to be 'unlucky' enough to have his number called. Dumped in basic training, terrified, and then getting sent overseas. Not particularly educated, bright, but with a strong sense of self preservation but bad enough instincts to make him do almost always what the worst possible idea was to help save himself.

0700 NOVEMBER 14, 1965 TWELVE MILES WEST OF NHA TRANG Music: The Animals - We Gotta Get This Place Mission: An A-4 Skyhawk has gone down near Nha Trang while in flying reserve, most likely due to an engine failure. A distress signal was received, but if we heard it, then it is within the realm of possibility that the Viet Cong did too. Your mission is to insert via helicopter, secure the landing zone, and recover the pilot. Intelligence reports that there is anywhere from 15 to 20 local Viet Cong operating in a nearby hamlet, but the source is shaky. Expect little to no contact. Due to events happening elsewhere in South Vietnam, there are few helicopters available, and air support will not be available. Story: Captain Tanaka grasped the controls of his Huey casually as the helicopter roared towards LZ Alpha. He'd been flying for years at this point, but this was the first time he really felt like there was a chance of something going wrong. He wasn't an emotional man, and as they approached the LZ, Tanaka stayed focused on the job. "Squad, listen up!" shouted Staff Sergeant Paulsen over the roaring blades of the helicopter. "For the last time, we will land at LZ Alpha, proceed not too far, maybe 300 yards or so, into the forest looking for a crashed A-4, and a pilot by the name of Captain Nichols!" The rest of the squad was silent. Specialist Guthrie and Corporal Marino joked back and forth about the occasional cracks of gunfire at base reminding them of Brooklyn. SSgt. Paulsen locked them down as they approached. Crack As Tanaka was swinging the Huey around, a burst of gun fire from came from the treeline. It seems that the Army did not get there first. The fire was light but striking all around the helicopter. Suddenly, one round entered the cockpit and struck the Co-Pilot, Lt. Samuelson in the chest. His body leans against the canopy as Tanaka forces the helicopter down. The crew jumps out of the helicopter while Tanaka immediately takes it up and around, hoping to get Samuelson back to base as soon as possible for urgent medical care. (What a start. We rolled a D2, and a random crewman was hit. The co-pilot was the unlucky soul, and on the damage table he was obviously dead.) The squad crawled behind a massive boulder with VC fire striking the rock and grass around them. Ringlo peaked out and a shot grazed the top of his helmet. He ducked back covering his head. Not how he wanted to go out. "GUTHRIE! GUTHRIE! Suppress that part of the forest! Now!" Paulsen yelled. Guthrie felt a wave of fear wash over him as he stepped out into the kill zone, but he had to keep the facade up. (Ringlo got lucky. One more on the d6 would've been a hit.) "DIE! DIE! DIE!" Guthrie shouted as he unloaded his M60 into the forest. Miraculously, the wild firing from the hip managed to hit three of the VC, who crumpled to the ground. The Americans were now on the offensive. (To hit all that he had been targeting, Guthrie needed essentially perfect rolls with 2d6, he landed a perfect, and the three VC he could see that he was targeting were mowed down by his MG) Paulsen motioned for his men to follow and they slowly stalked through the trees. "Sarn't." Pfc. Polidoro whispered, "I dunno airplanes as well as cars, but this looks important." A gleaming piece of steel, embedded in the forest floor, stuck out like a sore thumb. The aircraft must be near. The squad continued forward and found the crash site. The pilot, Nichols, was lying forty feet away, motionless and covered in blood. Beside him was an obviously dead VC with a bullet wound in his head. Pfc. Lawson quickly moved up to the pilot and checked for a pulse. "Got a pulse--weak and thready. We're going to need a dust off, ASAP." Paulsen grimaced and grabbed Pfc. Delgado's shoulder. "Bac, I need to call a dust off." Paulsen and Delgado crouched down, as Paulsen spoke into the radio. "Papa Bear TOC, this is 3-1 Actual. The pilot is wounded and needs a dust off ASAP." (Bad roll, a 2. MEDEVAC will take a long time to arrive, and mostly fully loaded. If we had more casualties at this point, we would be looking at some major problems.) "3-1 Actual this is Papa Bear TOC. I have one available MEDEVAC but they are already carrying a load. It will be a few minutes. Papa Bear Out." "God dammit!" Paulsen growled as he slammed the radio back onto Delgado's back. Suddenly, another burst of gunfire. "Frank! Your fire team has got the pilot, get him to the clearing, we will hold the line here!" Marino, Smith, Lawson and Poildoro sprung into action. Lawson picked up the casualty, while moving and firing. Paulsen, Arlo, Bac, Dodger, Guthrie, and Ringlo were stuck behind cover as heavy VC fire continued to pour in. The two sides exchanged shots from cover, but nothing was landing. The shouts in Vietnamese and gunfire continued to get louder. Paulsen had a sinking feeling that this wasn't going to stop anytime soon. "Guthrie, get that gun set up! I'll cover you!" As Guthrie began to ready his weapon with Ringlo's help, a grenade landed just a few feet from where they were crouching. Ringlo tackled Guthrie and the grenade went off. Hot shrapnel entered Ringlo's body through his left leg. He cried out in pain. Guthrie crawled back to the machine gun. "Son of a bitch, son of a bitch, son of a bitch." Guthrie muttered to himself before opening fire. He caught the first glimpse. There was at least twelve of them and six of us. Not good. Meanwhile... Marino popped smoke. He heard the heavy gunfire coming from not too far away. His heart began to sink, wondering how much this pilot was truly worth if it meant losing the rest of the squad. "Oh... oh poo poo. Hang in here, buddy." Lawson checked the breathing of the downed pilot. It was under six breaths a minute. They were running out of time. Thankfully, a Huey roared out over the treeline and quickly put it down. After throwing the dying pilot onto the already crowded Huey, the chopper lumbered into the air and away from the combat zone. "Let's go, we gotta get back there!" Marino shouted, his fireteam running at a full sprint. At the fight... Guthrie lit up the forest with gunfire. He began to realize that if his way out was pretending to be a mad man, maybe he shouldn't have qualified for the LMG. He managed to hit a Viet Cong, who fell into the bushes. Many more rounds of fire were exchanged, and the split fire team was returning to the forest to rejoin the squad. "Bac!" Paulsen screamed over the gunfire "Get on the radio--we need to get the gently caress out of here!" "Papa Bear TOC this is 3-1, requesting immediate evac." "3-1 Papa Bear TOC. Can do. Chopper en route. Clear the landing zone." Bac shouted back to Paulsen that the chopper was coming. Marino loaded his M79 grenade launcher, and pointed it in a general arc at the continually approaching Vietnamese. His explosive landed right in the middle, shredding most of the squad. For a brief moment, there was a lull. The squad regrouped. Then suddenly, the surviving seven VC charged the position. They exchanged gunfire at close range. Joe Smith was shot in the stomach after trading shots with a VC and collapsed down, screaming in pain. Paulsen was tackled by a VC soldier as the battle continued around them. Dodger picked off a VC swinging around. Paulsen's mind was blank as he wrestled with the soldier. Paulsen was a state participant at East High School in KC. The VC jammed his knife into Paulsen's leg, but by looking down left his forehead exposed. Fighting through the pain, Paulsen headbutt the VC, knocking him unconscious. Around him, the fighting subsided. It seemed most of the VC retreated after the charge, their casualties too great. Paulsen, grasping his leg in pain, wouldn't execute an unconscious man, but he would make his life difficult. Paulsen, using some rope that Bac had on him, tied up the unconscious soldier and rolled him down the hill that the VC had came up over. If he didn't survive the steep fall, that wasn't his business. (Paulsen was locked in a 1v1 melee, and had a few losses against him, but had heavy die rolls and was stronger than the VC, winning the melee fight. Paulsen rolling the VC down a rocky slope ensures that the VC is not coming back anytime soon.) Lawson struggled to keep Joe Smith alive. "C'mon, stay alive dammit!" he shouted. The squad, covering the area, took peaks back as Lawson grew increasingly desperate to save the wounded Georgian. Having stopped the bleeding, for now, Lawson picked up Smith and proceeded back towards LZ Alpha. At the LZ, Tanaka's blood stained chopper set down. The Army didn't have resources to spare as another battle was happening requiring most of the helicopter resources in Vietnam at the time. There was a new co-pilot. One who seemed unhappy sitting in the blood of his predecessor. The squad loaded into the helicopter and left the area. Joe Polidoro grasped the hand of Joe Smith as he was being tended to by Doc Lawson. "You gotta stick with me, Joey. There's a sandwich waiting for you in my town when you get up there..." Primary Objective: Recover Captain Nichols SUCCESS Secondary Objective: Destroy VC elements in area FAILED Casualties †Lt. Samuelson (Killed In Action) †Cpt. Nichols (Killed In Action) †Pfc. Joe Smith (Died Of Wounds) SSgt. Jacob Paulsen (Wounded) Pfc. William Ringlo (Wounded) That did not go particularly great. Spent a lot of time stuck in cover as the VC had a few lucky rolls and got the drop on the Americans. The most impressive was Guthrie with a very low-probability die roll taking out the first wave of VC. Perhaps it was not wise to pretend to be crazy, and it was within them all along? Pfc. Joe Smith died because of a failed die roll with his severe injuries. Rest easy, soldier. Feel free to create a new character. Well, we're already dropping like flies but I guess that's not terribly surprising given the, uh "quality" of the troops. Give Guthrie a medal for being the best drat sonofabitch in the unit, though. How do the rules for wounds work? Will injured soldiers simply be unavailable for a few missions, or do they need to be replaced?

Since the update schedule looks like mission-rest-mission etc. we will see what happens to our local wounded. There are rules about die rolls for wounds, but our wounded were not "knocked out of the fight", so they will almost certainly return to combat with everyone else next battle.

The brass so far given out would just be CIBs for the grunts for having their baptism of fire and Purple Hearts for those who got burned by said baptism. edit: The A-4 pilot will def get an Air Medal though because the brass will want something good out of this embarassment. this looks like it will go to fun places. Faction: US Army Name: Michael "Mike" Sanville Age: 19 Hometown: Brockton, MA Special Role: None Description: After graduating high school, Mike decided to take a year off to "find himself" but due to a general lack of ambition and motivation, and not coming from a fairly well off family, he didn't even get very far and wound up busing tables in Albany, NY. After returning home for the holidays he decided to enlist to see if the military would teach him some discipline and give him some sort of motivation to make something of himself. At the conclusion of Basic Training and receiving no recommendations for any specializations, Mike requested being posted to a unit that would "have the best chance of seeing action" thinking that perhaps being shot at and possibly dying might be the spark that will finally kickstart his life.

this seems fun! id like to sign up a fella as well Faction: United States Army Name: Sébastien 'Seb' Dempsey Specialization: Demolitions, Bilingual (English, French) Age: 20 Hometown: Hackberry, Southwestern Louisiana, USA Character description: Sébastien was born and raised in Hackberry, a small community bordering Calcasieu Lake in southwestern Lousiana. He came from a large Cajun family, and grew up speaking both English from his mom's side and French from his dad's. He was generally a good kid growing up, went to church, did okay in school, loved his family. But he always looked forward to the summers, when he, his siblings, and his many cousins would go out every day and see what kind of trouble they could get into. Swimming, fishing, exploring the back woods.. but Seb? Seb's absolute favourite thing to do was to play with fireworks. The whistles, the bangs, the sparks! His mom disapproved, but his dad decided that rather than forbidding it, it'd be better to teach him how to be safe about it, how to keep all his fingers and everything where they should be. More than half a decade later, that caution and experience would come in handy. Signing up with the army to try and save money for college, Seb volunteered to train for a demolitions role, and excelled! Now, with his basic training done, his qualification for demolitions readiness, and his knowledge of French, he's hoping he can do good work in Vietnam, and set up his future. Course, the Vietnam war and 'good work' aren't exactly bedfellows. We'll have to see how Seb fares.
