It doesn't just set up the grief, but the progression of Christian from semi-caring boyfriend to completely detached robotic boyfriend is important. The way they portrayed the "your grief is an annoying burden to me" partner is very accurate and real.

I'm curious if there was any post-death symbolism to the characters that I missed? - Mark was stuffed and wearing a fool's cap. He was the joking fool with no substance to him. - Josh was going to write an exposé on Hårga, and in death his mouth was stuffed full so he couldn't talk. - Christian was made into the horrible beast (I don't remember how they worded it, but they used some wording like that to refer to the bear) because, well, that's what he was to Dani in an emotionally abusive way. What else was there?

Worth noting that Dani is absolutely not speaking Swedish* in that scene with the May Pole. It's just part of the way hallucinogens make you feel connected to everyone on a very base, spiritual level. *this is based on my very intermediate knowledge of Swedish and may be wrong - could be that she's speaking Swedish and just has a bad English accent over it
