While the story is explicitly Alm's story, Celica will simply happen herself into your top ace list with very little resource investment despite a reduced story presence. She does cause Berkut to snap and go insane, however.

That's not even the best worst part.

Gunter (the aforementioned Jagen character) is possessed by the real mastermind behind everything, the fallen dragon Anankos. Once defeated, Gunter stabs himself to free his mind from said final boss. After doing this, Elise and Sakura are able to not only heal Gunter's wounds, but Gunter is freed from the mind control completely. The real kicker is that as the party has moved closer to the showdown with Anankos, they've faced other named bosses that have been possessed by Anankos. Absolutely NONE of these characters are revived and join the party after being defeated, despite both Elise and Sakura being right there when each of these characters die.

I'd still carry around some keys just in case you need to swing someone over to get things done, especially if a map is wonky with the starting positions. Also, mastering Thief is very much recommended because that's the only way a character can use the Steal ability outside of the Thief class.

Oh, and the most important issue that has caused me to bench him: GET SOME loving SPEED, YA DINGUS!

Ignatz is in a similar situation, but I think the problem there is that I've used some combination of Claude/Bernie/Ashe/Leonie for primary bow user duty, and all have been fine and thus make poor Ignatz superfluous. I guess I'll try Ignatz the Assassin for my third run, maybe that'll be the change he needs to stand out more.

I can also vouch for Marianne's incredible offensive utility. I'm currently having her run in Mortal Savant, and she fits it very well. Even if my choice to have everyone in their monastery outfits leads to accidentally hilarity because the default crouching "spell equipped" pose for Mortal Savant really does not gel with Marianne's long flowing dress. Oh and any staff she has equipped just floats over her right hip and is not properly attached to her waist. That's also hilarious.

I think the datamine said that Dark Flier is indeed locked to female characters. Mage Knight is the coin flip, since no real confirmation was found on gender locks, except that a test run of a male Mage Knight merely recycled the code assets of the Holy Knight class instead of using new assets.

Regardless, be ready to power grind up lance ranks for the people who you intend to put in these class, since all multi-weapon Advanced mounted classes want a minor in lances before you pass the certification.

So, it turns out that while Cindered Shadows' save data (read: levels, classes, victories, etc.) will operate independently of the main game, completing stuff in Cindered Shadows will unlock extra things in the the main game, like interacting with the Ashen Wolves in the main monastery content. And yes, the above tweet thread does more or less confirm that the Ashen Wolves will appear in the War Phase if you manage to recruit them to your class.

Although, Balthus confirming he has a big booming voice now makes me really upset he doesn't support with Raphael.

This is the only game OST Nintendo hounds like this though

Like they clearly don't appreciate any of their music being on youtube, but this specific one they go after extremely consistently and forcefully.
If I had to guess, whatever music contract that got put together for the game is still in effect, and thus Nintendo has to abide by the terms within. It might have to do with the fact that since the (almost certainly) new music for Cindered Shadows has not been officially released, Nintendo simply must block all uploads of the soundtrack until the DLC drops. Like, usually by this point, an official OST release would have been announced or even been released to the public, but that hasn't happened yet. So, my gut says that maybe they'll dial it back by the end of the week, but I do not have high hopes.

It kind of fits in with how Nintendo has been very controlling about what information gets put out for the game from early on. I think that in trying to learn from the mistakes of Fates, Nintendo decided to overreact and be way more controlling of Three Houses' development cycle in order to not repeat past mistakes.

I think the issue with the mounted classes that the game treats the character as part of the mount's model rather than its own separate model. Thus, the code for outfits would potentially muck around with the code for the mount itself, resulting in either a lot of glitches or even game crashes.

Interesting. It seems that the entire playable cast have data in Cindered Shadows, but are left "unrecruited" so you can't access them. Out of the list, the most striking is Manuela, as she starts as an Assassin (her enemy class if unrecruited in the main game), but still has Priest and Bishop on hand. Maybe she was going to be part of the playable CS roster at one point in time?

To add to what was said, if you don't recruit either Hanneman or Manuela and are on all non-CF routes, the pair will show up in the defense of Garreg Mach as the Warlock manning the Fire Orb (Hanneman) and the Bishop at the back of the starting point atop the stairs (Manuela). I did not know this until Ragnar Homsar's LP showed it off, as I recruited both in my playthroughs.

lorenz: *absolutely refuses to have good levels*

he's not bad, exactly, but he is aggressively middle of the road. He tries to be a good mage and a good cavalier and succeeds at being mediocre at both
This is also my experience with Lorenz. He wants to effectively be a dedicated multitasker (Dark Knight is basically the end goal he wants to be), but ultimately gets sidelined by the specialist units. Lorenz wants to throw magic around...but there's Lysithea and Marianne to compete with him and both have more lucrative spell lists (Lysithea has high magic, anti-cavalry and anti-monster magic + Warp; Marianne has high crit spells + Physic and Silence). Lorenz also wants to be a cavalry unit, and there's Leonie doing doughnuts around him like it's an Olympic sport. Even Ignatz, by contrast, has a few more "get out of jail free" cards to play. His access to Rally skills is absolutely weclome, plus Ignatz will always have +20 Hit thanks to his personal skill. Thus, Ignatz can slide into a solid backup option role, while Lorenz just simply cannot establish a niche for himself to excel at.

And all of this is before you factor in students from other houses you poach or even Byleth, as those units can push Lorenz (and Ignatz to a degree) even further into the back.

Dimitri turned out fairly tanky in my AM run, so I had him rip and tear on the way over to that side while Annette and Mercedes chipped in with either a finishing sweep, by keeping Dimitri healed up constantly, or being mobile supply crates full of lances for Dimitri to burn through. Thank goodness his crest only affects combat arts and doesn't also affect regular attacks, otherwise that whole strategy would have driven me insane.

AradoBalanga

Yeah, I'd say the difficulty goes (from easiest to hardest): Verdant Wind --> Silver Snow --> Azure Moon. Yes, Seteth may not have the ranged options Claude will most likely have by that point (I think you can maybe brute force Seteth into D bows by that point, so he can sort of have range), but being able to fly around like Claude will definitely help smooth things along. Claude also has the bonus of the Immortal Corps battalion, a 2-3 range AoE gambit that can be very useful with how clustered enemies can get. Seriously, I'd go for playing Verdant Wind first just so any NG+ runs have access to the very good C rank flier battalion out of the gate.

For Dimitri's side of things, I'd recommend that he carry the March Ring into battle, so he can have 6 movement and get around stuff faster. His unique timeskip classes being foot-locked really hurt him in the long run, so any extra movement he can pick up is welcomed. After that, it's sadly a game of "pray Annette/Mercedes/Ashe turned out good so they can survive the fuckpocalypse they'll be walking into".

I have a weird question about Chapter 5 of Cindered Shadows. Spoiled since it's about a cutscene. So, when the Ashen Wolves are captured after the chapter, all of them are in their monastery clothes....except Balthus, who stays in his War Monk outfit for the entire scene. Is that a glitch or did the devs forget to swap clothes for Balthus? I didn't meddle with any of the appearance options, at least, I don't think I did.

As for the actual DLC, I did like it. It definitely made me re-evaluate some of the things I passed on in the main story. Seriously, the Great Wall of Edelgard was a lifesaver in a lot of cases, and this is someone who only gave people the Fortress Knight exam just for the defense stat boosts you'd get from passing. My one advice for anyone who wants to try the DLC: keep Linhardt as a Bishop. The extra healing uses will come in handy for most of the DLC, even though I wished that I could have had access to a healer with Fortify for some maps.
