Fast X needs to start with Nic Cage monologuing about how his son, Brian, was murdered. "Directed by Mark Neveldine / Brian Taylor" appears as he loads his shotgun eyepatch.

we can laugh but I believe nearly every poster here would pay hundreds to go back to 99 and watch F&F1 on one of those TV/VCR combos.

Everyone's anticipating something huge and epic for FFX (you know it'll be a roman numeral, it's the only variant they haven't done yet) but I think it'd rock if they went back to their roots and it was a low-stakes crime drama as in the original movie and Tokyo Drift. There's no way it would ever happen, but winding it all down and going character driven like FF1 would be such a surprise.

For all the jokes around VHS/TV combo units, FF1 is actually pretty compelling. VIn Diesel is capital-A Acting - the monologue about his father's death is more memorable than entire films in this series - and the dual-identity stuff with Brian gets pretty intense.

Toretto's crew are all pretty well fleshed out. Vince in particular is memorable, but that might be because of his using a gay slur and then rocking a mesh tank while failing to make popcorn. Weird guy for a car chase movie. His arc is to get poo poo on constantly and be a loser in comparison to the leads. He gets beat up, Mia hooks up with Brian, then he gets seriously injured and has Brian save him. It's a tough life being an LA car goon.

The later films don't have time for characters like this as they have to fit in the 13 or so "ensemble members" around Vin DIesel's ego.

The joke about them going into space is becoming real. I really don't know what else to say.

I liked the new haircuts.

Tokyo Drift is a sequel to The Fast & The Furious. 2F2F is a sequel to how people felt about The Fast & The Furious. The sequels largely follow in 2F2F.

Yep that was a fast / furious alright. Insane stunts, absurd premise, leaps of logic, nearly instigating an international incident in a wifebeater and having a car crash into a satellite.

It's more of the same, just directed a bit better. The scenes that are flashbacks to 1989 are strange and uncomfortable. Tyrese has graduated to being Daffy Duck except he kills a lot of people in this. Probably second highest bodycount. Behind Vin, who double bicep flex jumps into three squads worth of SWAT .

Oh and Brian is alive, you just can't see him!

I didn't enjoy this one as much as the others. The silly stuff was fun and them going into space saved the movie for me but I absolutely hated all the magnets bs. It went from cool car stunts (tarzaning a car over a bridge!!) to them just flicking a dial to solve their problems. It felt like half the screen time was just the magnet knob going up and down. Also the crew for sure murdered dozens of innocent people throwing those cars into the truck at the end.

1/5 a movie is magnet switch shots: bad
1/5 a movie is gear shift shots: haute cinema

After 1, the series is briefly two franchises - 2F2F and Tokyo Drift are two attempts at following the original movie. 2F2F gets the heightened action and exaggeration, while Tokyo Drift gets the medium-stakes crime and famiky drama.

2F2F is a total fever dream. That torture scene is beyond stuff you'd see in 24, and it's probably about as gay as Top Gun.

Tokyo Drift gets the fish-out-of water, new environment stuff. There's action and car stuff, of course, but it doesn't really do anything that outrageous. Not compared to the hacking harpoon gun in 2F2F, at least.

Tokyo Drift is a better movie and probably would've done OK without the confusing branding.

Everything about 9 was "they did just enough for me to accept this on screen". Which is a far cry from the complete buy in that 5 gives you, but 5 is really exceptional. I think the biggest "missed opportunity" is that Cena makes way more sense as Brian's brother, but without Paul they can't tell that story. We didn't need more Toretto's but we could have used another O'Connor.

Roman is O'Connors' brother / lover.

I would do this order, if you must pick one;

Fast & Furious, as it's the original and sets the scene.
2 Fast 2 Furious, it's immediate followup adds a lot of new characters.
Tokyo Drift, as a little reprieve and intro of the crucial Han character
Fast & Furious, returning to the Brian / Dom story.
Fast 5, probably the best overall story and a movie where The Rock isn't annoying. Has the best action on the highway and in Brazil. This is where espionage and intrigue really ramp up.
Fast 6 continues the main story a lot, and has a few big character moments.
Furious 7 expands thing out a bit, completing the transition to super spy stuff. This is where Paul Walker exits, so has a bit of an emotional impact for a lot of people.
The Fate of the Furious has Statham's character in a larger capacity, continuing the theme of villains becoming allies.
F9 is the most recent and is there fore crucial for watching the finale installments.

That's my 2c!

It does seem like they have statistics and equipment, like:

Dom has high stats in Family, Cars and Muscle; with a specialty for Muscle Car and a penchant for legendary Chargers. Key skills of Living Life 1/4 Mile At A Time, Family, and Wrench.

Brian had similarly high stats except his were in Charm, Cars and Agility. He specialised in JDM and he favoured Skylines. More akin to a Rogue.

Mouse had low skills in Driving but high Mechanic. Cypher has max Hacking skills. Shaw doesn't have as much of a car specialty but access to good equipment and a high Fighting skill. Tyrese has maximum Luck.

I don't think I'm the first person to break this down and I suspect there's a far lengthier version in Vin's trailer. Which, actually, would be an amazing piece of treasure for a homebrew RPG campaign...

The first F&F movie soundtrack is a real time capsule. A heavy Ja Rule presence.

Tokyo Drift soundtrack is flawless, See You Again was a mega hit and the Dillon Francis "Get Low" track is one of the funnest EDM songs ever.

I do agree there should be a huge John Williams style "Dom's Theme" leitmotif for when he starts flying and stuff.

I finally finished this last week and it is dumber than anything I could have imagined. I got two major observations:

First, I liked the part where Dom's car fought two helicopters, which had harpooned his doors. Even though they managed to lift up the back of his car, he was able to shift gears, and press on the peddle enough to make the car go back on the ground and he could defeat the helicopters.

Second, John Cena was smart to have his character die one movie after his introduction. These films are easy paychecks, but the acting is always lazy

The Homestuck naming scheme

I would have paid a full ticket price of admission to see blurry iphone footage of the exact moment that broke Justin Lin. Just what exactly was Vin Diesels ego defining moment that made the guy who directed half of the franchise just up and walk away from a $15,000,000 pay check?

It'd have to be massive, like he tried to fire Momoa or something.
